A devastatingly honest testimonial for people facing truth
Perhaps no other documentary among many that I have seen has the power and the unflinching bravery of those participants for whom this film is a tribute to their willingness to unflinchingly face up to endemic abuse by themselves and their community. Starting with the interview of a 13 year old and ending with her as a young adult, the viewer is challenged by the strength and perseverance of individuals to confront abusers and at times themselves in ferreting out and trying to resolve an extraordinary, though according to statistics not so extraordinary, situation. The film is hard going in parts but so worthy of experiencing simply because it exhibits a profound attempt by individuals acting in concert to find a way towards healing and rehabilitation without the use of punitive and adversarial measures so often employed in non-indigenous legal systems. Told mostly in close-ups, the camera rivets our attention to the expression of individuals, making the narrative structure genuinely authentic. Not a film for the feint at heart but rewarding for its sensitivity. Did it garner a Pulitzer?
