The ski jump scenes take place on what was at the time the largest ski jump in the world at Blue Ridge Ski Area near Big Pines, California, four miles west of Wrightwood. It was built in a bid attempt to host the 1932 Winter Olympics, the same year the Summer Games had already been awarded to Los Angeles. The Winter Games eventually went to Lake Placid, New York.
The narrator states that the ski jumper slows his speed using a "Christiania turn". (A related downhill skiing term is "Stem Christie", where one of the skier's poles is the "stem".) Christiania was the former name of Oslo.
This was filmed in and around Big Pines L.A. County Camp, also known as Big Pines Camp or Big Pines Park, and called "Los Angeles County playground" by the narrator. This was a popular recreation area four miles west of Wrightwood, California. First opened in 1924, it was developed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Department of Parks and Recreation. The lodge and a portion of the adjacent recreation hall are seen in the brief establishing shot, with cars parked along either side of Angeles Crest Highway. Some parts of the foundation are all that remain of the lodge, but the recreation hall still stands and is now a National Forest visitor center. The ski runs were at Blue Ridge Ski Area, one of the first ski resorts in the country, and are now part of Mountain High Resort.
The amazing sight of orange trees growing within sight of snowy mountains was a marketing staple for early California tourism campaigns.
