“I’m much more comfortable being the underdog,” Kevin Feige recently told Empire.
If anyone has lost the right to call themselves an underdog, it’s got to be Feige, right? After all, he’s the head of Marvel Studios, the architect of a film franchise that dominated box offices for over a decade. He’s a key member of Disney’s corporate empire, a byword for a producer who knows how to please fans and executives alike.
Why in the world would he use that word to describe himself? Well, you don’t have to look much further than recent Marvel movie reviews and disappointing box office showings to find the answer. A degree of superhero fatigue has set in, and audiences no longer automatically line up for an increasingly unwieldy number of new Marvel entries.
Sure, some dedicated fans will disagree, but Feige clearly knows and accepts the truth.

Disney has been trying to get back on track as their acquired properties have taken hits over the years. Marvel Studios is a big brand that audiences have voted against with their wallets lately. With projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels underperforming at the box office, many people debated whether superhero fatigue had finally set in. When Bob Iger returned to run the House of Mouse, the CEO had voiced his concerns over the quantity of material that Marvel and Star Wars had been releasing. He had also championed films focusing on story rather than messages.
Iger had long pledged to reduce the number of projects that Marvel and Star Wars produce. According to Variety, in the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, the CEO said, “We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of...

If you’re looking for new ideas from the House of Mouse, you might be waiting awhile.
During Disney’s Q2 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger made comments to the effect that there was “a lot of value in sequels” as they’re easier to market. He also pointed to competitors’ doing well with sequels, likely meaning DreamWorks and Illumination.
Because God forbid the studio that innovated animation for decades tries something new.
This would explain why we’re seeing Moana 2, Frozen 3 and 4, Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5 and not the next groundbreaking animated feature film from Disney and/or Pixar.
In fact, looking at their upcoming animated slate, only Elio is an original concept.
It’s likely that Disney is playing it safe in part due to many recent Disney and Pixar animated misfires at the box office, including Strange World, Wish,...

Dinsey’s streaming ambitions have been undergoing significant changes over the past few months, and on Tuesday, the company reported that its flagship streaming platform Disney+ added 4 million customers during the first three months of the year. Star Wars has been, and still is, a massive part of this particular writer’s life. Unfortunately, I wasn’t around to catch A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back in cinemas when they were first released, but I did manage to sneak in to see those cuddly Ewoks lay waste to the Empire in Return of the Jedi back in 1983. The franchise inspired me to work in the industry, and I had the thrill of watching and re-watching the original trilogy countless times with friends and family. As we all know, the series evolved into a cultural behemoth and, unlike nowadays, where I think the amount of Star Wars content that is available to consume is actually to the detriment of the series’ quality, we only had the original movies to cling to.

Despite the manifold complications that arose during the acquisition of the Star Wars IP by Disney in 2019, one of the less complicated topics of conversation was George Lucas’ involvement in the franchise.
With the auteur seemingly retiring from the IP that he built from the ground up, it didn’t seem necessary to bring in Lucas on every creative, executive decision rolling out of Disney.

However, there is an inherent decency in honoring the legacy of George Lucas and the universe of original stories and characters he built straight out of his imagination.
Despite the disrespect served by Disney with the Skywalker saga, the billion-dollar studio did seem to rally in Lucas’ favor after adopting one of his original ideas into some of their latest projects.

A new rumor has surfaced that Disney is looking to make a live-action version of Big Hero 6 and that they are planning to set it in the MCU. While there have been no scoops or official confirmations, fans have taken to the internet to talk about what they think of the project. It is not known if Disney is looking to adapt the animated version that it made for itself or the original version from Marvel Comics, but it seems fans are largely open to the idea, if a little skeptical.

Fans have taken to the internet to talk about how they feel about the idea, with responses staying mostly positive. However, some are a little ticked about the whole idea, given that Big Hero 6 already has a pretty large presence outside of the MCU, and bringing them in could cause fans to confuse the properties,...

It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.
The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

“Loki” could conjure up a Best Drama Series nomination this year and give Disney and Marvel representation at this year’s Emmys. The second season of “Loki” continues the journey of Tom Hiddleston‘s titular former villain as he attempts to save the multiverse. Loki traverses the multiverse with the help of Owen Wilson‘s Mobius, Ke Huy Quan‘s Ouroboros, Sophia Di Martino‘s Sylvie, and Wunmi Mosaku‘s Hunter B-15. They are hoping to repair the damage caused to the multiverse during the events of the first season, with Kang (Jonathan Majors) again at the center of the trouble.
Season one was greeted with rapturous applause and this sophomore outing has been met with the same response.
Bob Strauss (The Wrap) observed: “Characters with compelling issues, high existential drama, quirky comedy and world-threatening action are blended better than in any other Disney+ show to date.”

X-Men ’97 delivered a slam dunk of an episode with Remember It, the 5th installment of the season, that followed the themes of mutant identity, and the way in which mutants have struggled to incorporate themselves in the world.
Rogue and Gambit in X-Men ’97

"Shrek" was a very important movie in animation history. It provided DreamWorks with its first true breakthrough hit, taking in $492 million in 2001. It ensured that Disney would have meaningful competition in the animation space for years to come, which has only been furthered in recent years with the dominance of Illumination in the marketplace. For DreamWorks though, it birthed what would become the studio's flagship franchise, one that has generated more than $3 billion since its inception. That franchise's biggest moment came in 2004 when "Shrek 2" hit theaters.
The animation house founded by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg hit a home run by pairing Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey in the first film, in no small part thanks to the stellar supporting cast.

Veteran Japanese character actor Tadanobu Asano is having a very overdue breakthrough moment. The chameleonic film star has been a mainstay of Japanese cinema for nearly three decades, while also regularly appearing in prominent supporting parts in big Hollywood productions. But his irresistible performance in FX’s period series Shōgun is giving him an all-new level of global recognition.
Asano co-stars in Shōgun as Kashigi Yabushige, the scheming lord of Izu, a rugged region of feudal Japan where much of the series takes place. Playing the character with lived-in swagger and a fatalistic sense of humor, Asano has become one of the show’s clear fan favorites, with Reddit and Twitter threads popping up to revel in his character’s antics. Asano announced himself early in Shōgun‘s run: As many have marveled, Yabushige makes his entrance to the show by boiling a man alive but then wins the audience...

We just learned so much about Disney’s classic movie Frozen!
Believe it or not, the original blockbuster premiered in theaters more than 10 years ago. In honor of the special anniversary, Vanity Fair got the film’s stars including Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff together to look back on the start of the successful franchise.
The feature revealed a lot about how the final movie we know and love differed from the original that Disney set out to create. It featured different actresses reading for Elsa and Anna (the characters played by Idina and Kristen) and a very different plot.
We also learned that Frozen was not the first Disney movie either Idina or Kristen auditioned for. Interestingly, they were both in the running for the same part in another hit from the House of Mouse.

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

The future of Paramount Pictures looks like it might sit with Skydance as things stand: more on the story here.
The process of trying to sell Paramount Global has been a long and drawn-out one for its parent company National Amusements, but most speculators agree that 2024 will be the year when the company changes ownership. This isn’t the same as Disney’s 2019 purchase of 20th Century Fox when the House of Mouse swooped in with a hefty $70bn. That deal certainly wasn’t as drawn-out as Paramount’s search for a new owner.
While some may feel that Disney overpaid somewhat to acquire its Hollywood rival, here in 2024 we’re in a completely different economic environment, and as such, no suitors have swept in to shower Paramount Global in excessive amounts of cash. Instead, companies seem wary about taking on Paramount’s varied assets, with lots of them (such...

A Real Pain – written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg – proved to be one of the biggest hits of the Sundance Film Festival and has now been slated for release.

Bidding is likely to start around $50 million for the NFL’s Christmas doubleheader, which is more likely to air on TV than a streaming service.
The No. 1 item on the NFL’s Christmas list this year is cash. A report from Front Office Sports indicates the league is planning to open bidding for its Christmas Day doubleheader, allowing CBS, ESPN/ABC, Fox, NBC and Prime Video to have a crack at the games. This is a tried-and-true method of driving up the price of broadcast rights for the NFL, but which channel or streamer would be the best way to deliver these games to fans?
Bidding is set to start at $50 million, and could reach as high as $100 million. The games are more likely to end up on a linear channel than a streaming service. ABC/ESPN, CBS or NBC make the most sense, because they provide broadcast and streaming options.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer continues to tease another Pirates project, with the latest update confirming that a reboot featuring a young, new cast is definitely happening.
It’s been the best part of four years since we first heard that Disney had plans to make two very different Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to continue the popular swashbuckling series that already boasts six films. The plans back in 2020 were to develop a female-led version which would be headlined by Margot Robbie alongside another film with an all-new cast. The latter version was based on a script penned by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the writer behind the original Pirates films.
Then in 2022, reports surfaced to suggest that the Margot Robbie-led version had been abandoned with Robbie herself stating that Disney ‘didn’t want to do it.’ However, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer popped up not long afterwards to suggest that...

Fubo CEO David Gandler wants to ensure that there is no room for interpretation of his feelings about the joint venture sports streaming service from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

In a presentation posted to the shareholder campaign website Vote Disney, the House of Mouse included highlights of its success with franchises as the company is waging a proxy fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz.
Corporate intrigue aside, the presentation reveals some compelling numbers on the high-profile acquisitions Disney has made over the past 15 years. In a section titled “Enduring franchises highlight our powerful IP and unique monetization capabilities,” Disney indicates that it has seen a 2.9 times and 3.3 times return on investment after purchasing Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios in 2012 and 2009, respectively.
In 2012, Disney paid $4 billion for Lucasfilm, giving Disney ownership of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

Deadpool & Wolverine broke the internet with its first teaser, ushering in a new era of hype in the MCU, one that has not been seen since Avengers: Endgame. The first feature-length mutant project in the MCU, the film has a lot riding on it and also has a lot of speculation about what it is going to be.
A still from the trailer of Deadpool and Wolverine
One of the main attractions of the film is that it will introduce mutants in a major capacity in the MCU. While X-Men heavy hitters Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff made their appearances way back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they were referred to as ‘enhanced’ and not mutants. A new theory has emerged that Wade, through his shenanigans will retcon the origins of the Maximoff twins and make them full-fledged mutants in the MCU as well.

Well, everyone, the winners for the 22nd Annual Golden Schmoes for the year 2023 are in. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer walked away the big winner, earning nine Schmoes. It took home most of the big prizes, including Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, Poster, Trailer, Line of the Year and Best Sequence. While an excellent showing that beat the seven wins Everything Everywhere All At Once took home last year, it still falls short of our all-time winner here at the Schmoes, Nolan’s own The Dark Knight, which won an amazing 12 awards.
Otherwise, the winners were an eclectic mix. Godzilla Minus One, which is now widely considered the greatest Kaiju movie ever made, took home three awards, including Best VFX, which is impressive considering how small its budget was compared to the competition. Third place was an interesting tie, with John Wick: Chapter 4, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,...

Last year, Disney+ started sending some of its original programming to physical media with limited edition SteelBook releases for the first two seasons of "The Mandalorian," as well as the Marvel Studios shows "WandaVision" and "Loki." This year, the House of Mouse will continue sending "Star Wars" and Marvel shows to 4K and Blu-ray with a whole new roster of SteelBook releases.
The Walt Disney Company has announced that the first season of "Andor" and the limited series run of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" are among the second wave of releases coming to physical media from Disney+. Interestingly enough, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" is referred to as the "complete series," which would seem to put a damper on any hopes that we might get a second season of the series with Ewan McGregor.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is indeed one of Disney’s most famous and successful franchises to date. However, had it not been for Johnny Depp leading the saga as the fan-favorite notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, perhaps it wouldn’t have reached these magnificent heights of fame. And then Disney made the massive mistake of firing him over his messy divorce drama.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise
While Depp made it clear he wouldn’t return to the franchise no matter what, it occurred to fans at one point in time that Disney actually regretted its decisions and wanted him back. But recent reports about Johnny Depp being eyed for a supporting role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 have fans already supporting him for not returning despite desperately wanting him to return.

With three new projects set to release before Summer 2025, at this point, there's no telling how far Disney will go to give audiences more of Moana.
Walt Disney Animation's 2016 film may be approaching its eight-year anniversary, but the story of Disney's popular Polynesian princess - and its pop culture proliferation - has only just begun.
Along with news of Moana crossing 1 billion streams on Disney+ and being the most streamed movie on any platform in 2023, the House of Mouse confirmed three "shiny" new Moana projects are set to release within the next year and a half.

Spring is now only a few weeks away, and this March at Disney+, a red rose is growing up out of ice frozen ground!
Probably the biggest title on the House of Mouse streamer’s calendar this month is the exclusive streaming premiere of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” the ground-breaking and record-setting concert film tracking Swift’s Eras Tour. The new “(Taylor’s Version)” edit will feature the concert film in its entirety for the first time, plus the song “cardigan” and four additional acoustic songs.
Also premiering this month, “X-Men: The Animated Series” gets a long overdue revival with the new animated series “X-Men '97,” featuring the returns of original cast members Ray Chase, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and more. Plus, the British historical adventure “Renegade Nell” finally gets its series premiere at the end of the month.

Any business, no matter how big, sails or sinks by the grace of its customers. Be it Disney or Starbucks, regardless of the product that is produced, the company’s priority needs to be to cater to the audiences that have supported them throughout. According to podcaster Patrick Bet-David, this is where Disney messed up, leading to the financial mess that has been the last few years for the House of Mouse.
Disney CEO Bob Iger
Elon Musk has come out to agree with Bet-David’s assessment, detailing what Disney forgot to do. The one thing that drives businesses is that it cater to the audience that has supported it throughout its lifetime: parents. The assessment came as a tweet, linking a sit down that the podcaster had with Gina Carano, discussing her ordeal with Disney that led to her being removed from The Mandalorian.

We’re almost into March of 2024, and Disney has been taking a long, hard look at itself after the disastrous 2023. When two of the most seemingly slam-dunk, profitable IPs are under your umbrella, business should be good, but alas, both Star Wars and Marvel have been plummeting in profits and reception for the House of Mouse. Bob Iger has been adamant about pulling back on the output of the franchise projects so as to not oversaturate the market. Additionally, the streaming service, Disney+, has seen a significant dip in subscribers after they lost 1.3 million accounts once they raised the prices. They have reportedly taken $300 million in streaming losses.

Despite being on network television, Seth MacFarlane's irreverent animated sitcom "Family Guy" can get away with a lot of edgy humor. With over 20 seasons under its belt, the show's reputation precedes it, and audiences are well-aware that the series is actively trying to push buttons through provocative satire and parody. However, during the show's original three-season run, before it got canceled and eventually resurrected thanks to a second wind from DVD sales, "Family Guy" didn't have the same power. That's why Fox initially refused to air one particular episode.
"When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" now sits firmly as part of the third season of "Family Guy," but it became an infamous installment after Fox axed the episode before it even aired. The episode in question finds dimwitted patriarch Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) scammed by a man selling volcano insurance, something wholly unnecessary in Quahog, Rhode Island.

We just learned so much about Disney’s classic movie Frozen!
Believe it or not, the original blockbuster premiered in theaters 10 years ago. In honor of the special anniversary, Vanity Fair got stars including Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff together to look back on the start of the successful franchise.
In the process, we learned a lot about how the final movie we know and love differed from the original plot.

Streaming services have spent the last year making unpopular decisions, including cracking down on passwords and introducing ad-supported tiers to their programming. Hulu recently sent out notices to all their subscribers that they would start implementing account restrictions that prevent anyone with a password from signing into an account if they do not reside in the same household. The decision originated with Netflix and, although the move seemed controversial with consumers, the streaming giant saw a massive uptick in subscriptions.
Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Disney+ have taken to raising their prices along with offering additional tiers that limit picture quality and feature advertisements. Unfortunately for Disney+, this would result in a major subscription hit. According to Variety, “Disney+ Core subscribers dropped to 111.3 million from the 112.6 million reported in the previous quarter, according to Disney’s quarterly earnings results released Wednesday.”

2023 marked 100 years of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, celebrating a full century of groundbreaking and beloved generational classics that revolutionized the landscape of animated cinema, forever. To honor the institution's legacy, Disney put out "Wish," the company's first original fairy tale that was unfortunately met with less-than-stellar reviews, and the charming short film "Once Upon a Studio," which although well received, failed to earn a nomination at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Short. In fact, "Wish" was also shut out of the Best Animated Feature race, indicating that the House of Mouse is no longer the untouchable empire it once was and that resting on their legendary laurels isn't going to cut it anymore. It certainly must be a pretty tough pill for those working at Disney to swallow, especially those who are fighting tooth-and-nail to bring the company through its evolutionary next step.

Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the original 2016 film is also planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025.
Note, Disney books the Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. It always had a November 27 release date set for a toon feature.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning. Disney Got Shut Out For Best Animated Feature At The 2024 Oscars – And This Is Awesome For Animation
In the U.S., animation has long been almost synonymous with Disney. After all, Disney has a long history with the medium, producing one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound and one of the first feature-length animated movies. That history and tradition haven't been all positive, however, as it has reduced the medium of animation to a genre in the eyes of many viewers — as well as the Academy.
In the last few years, however, Disney has started to lag behind some of the other studios when it comes to the Academy Awards. The last couple of years have shown that when Disney isn't present, the category is more diverse and better for it — with movies that push the envelope and the medium forward.
In the case of the 2024 Oscars, the lack of Disney among the nominees shows a pleasant surprise in the kind of movie the academy is recognizing.

Disney has been in the headlines already in 2024 with the copyright for their first Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie, falling into the public domain. The studio powerhouse had a pretty flat 2023 as just about every big release from them underperformed at the box office. They are hoping to shake that off and hit 2024 running. What can we expect from the House Of Mouse this year? Let’s take a look at the Disney 2024 release schedule.

If you missed Disney's "Wish" in theaters over the holiday season, you're in luck: the new movie now has a digital and home media release date.
"Wish" is set to make its digital debut on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, before hitting Ultra HD, DVD, and Blu-ray -- complete with special features galore -- roughly seven weeks later on March 12, 2024. There's no word yet on when the animated family film is set to hit Disney+, but it will certainly end up on the streamer at some point.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Marvel’s Echo, which debuts with all five episodes today on Disney+ & Hulu.
Turns out those predictions and wishful thinking that Marvel finally had lost the plot were a little premature.
Launching today on the increasingly integrated Disney+ and Hulu after an anemic year for the Kevin Feige-run studio, the very real and unapologetic Echo is one of the most powerful things Marvel ever has made. To be honest, even with such top-tier talent as Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs, The English’s Chaske Spencer and the iconic Tantoo Cardinal on board, I didn’t think Disney and Marvel had it in them to be so audacious and savvy.
It’s great sometimes to be wrong.

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

For loyal Netflix users who have been booting up the Big N since before Blockbuster went the way of the Dodo, it must feel like deja vu. If you go to your streaming app right now in the U.S., the available movie selection is still dominated by Netflix originals that the algorithm desperately wants you to be aware of. Maestro; Society of the Snow; maybe the new Dan Levy project, Good Grief. However, if you scroll past those—or look simply at the top 10 movies on the app at the moment—you see a more striking story being told.
The Equalizer 3; The Meg 2; The Super Mario Bros. Movie. All are major studio-released intellectual property, and all of the films came out in the last year—in the last six months in the cases of The Equalizer 3 and The Meg 2. And if you broaden the net to 18 months ago,...

2023 saw Universal end Disney’s dominant seven-year run as global box office champs, thanks to huge successes like Oppenheimer and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
It was a close race in the end, but Universal has pipped Disney to the post and taken the crown for the highest global box office haul in 2023.
The studio’s victory ends Disney’s annual dominance of the box office, a run that began in 2016 and saw the House of Mouse eclipse other studios for seven years in a row.
Universal released seven more films than its rival, with the studio’s 24 films earning an estimated $4.91 billion in worldwide ticket sales, compared to an estimated $4.83 billion from Disney’s 17 movies.
As we said, it was a pretty close race both in the US and internationally, but Universal’s triumph validates its strategy of putting out a blend of titles, including action, horror, drama, animation and more.
