Featured review
Unfunny, poorly made porn comedy
This early hardcore feature tries very hard to mix humor with sex but fails. Its only residual value, currently meriting two video reissues, is in a Judy Angel takes on John Holmes b.j. summit meeting.
The twerp who writes liner notes for the Something Weird DVD-R boxes typically is stumped by the title -what could it possibly refer to is his reaction. It's admittedly an awkward, lousy moniker, but is meant as a riff on Robert Altman's hit movie M*A*S*H, as well as a reference to a female-to-male sex change operation that is part of the plot line.
Picture is set in the future, 1987, in a big-city hospital (identified as "Bristol") where Dr. Wildare played by Holmes is planning to affix a penis to a female patient. Format here is like the currently popular XXX spoofs of hit TV shows, only making fun of '60s icons like "Dr. Kildare" and "Ben Casey". Wildare's rival is named Dr. Chasey and the lunatic head of the hospital is Dr. Dill S. Pee (eat your heart out Raymond Massey).
So far so bad, but what kills this cheapie completely is the sheer carelessness in all departments. Fans of bad acting ain't seen nothing yet until they've witnessed Dr. Chasey's terrible line readings, plus his penchant for talking dirty and disrespectfully that even upsets Holmes (!). The patient in search of a weenie is even worse. Judy Angel, fresh from her success in the first hardcore hit MONA, does an adequate job as a fellow doctor, while Holmes' earnestness would be campy in other circumstances.
Casting is miserable, with very unattractive women chosen, and cretinous guys. The attempts at slapstick (e.g., Dr. Pee revving up his motorcycle in his office maniacally as a running "gag") and jokes are pitiful throughout.
Hardcore sex is delivered, with fans undoubtedly interested in seeing a nearly 10-minute long fellatio effort by Angel on Holmes, which certainly demonstrates her professionalism if nothing else. His eventual ejaculation looks fake, of the "her mouth is overflowing" concealed variety.
The SWV DVD-R runs 72 minutes, while a 2009 DVD issued by Televista clocks at a mere 43 minutes and is strictly softcore. It seems to be an edited version possibly used for drive-ins and other venues that couldn't tolerate XXX action.
Watching this obscure title nearly 40 years after I was struck by the contrast with DEEP THROAT, released about a year later. It is a testament to Gerard Damiano's talent that his little porn comedy turned out to be one of cinema's biggest hits of the entire decade and was probably the first porn film seen by millions of its attendees. SMASHH coulda been a contender, only lacking quality in every category.
