This episode is based on a story by Washington Irving, whose most famous one is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", which was the basis of the first episode of Shelley Duvall's follow up series, "Tall Tales & Legends". Ed Begley, Jr., who appears in this episode, would go on to play Ichabod Crane in the later series.
Unlike the other episodes, this tale is based on an American short story rather than a traditional European or Asian fairy tale. It serves as something of a backdoor pilot to Shelley Duvall's follow up series, "Tall Tales & Legends".
Glenn Withrow and Chris Penn both played opposing gang members in director Francis Ford Coppola's "Rumble Fish".
Although this episode was not the final one to air, it was the last one to finish production.
Roy Dotrice, who plays Rip's friend Peter Vanderdonk, would later play the King in the series finale "The Dancing Princesses".
