German actor best known for his roles in the films of Fassbinder
Filmgoers familiar with the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder will certainly know Günther Kaufmann, who has died of a heart attack aged 64. Kaufmann had parts great and small in more than a dozen of the prolific German director's movies. He was what the Germans call a "Besatzungskind", one of the many children born between 1945 and 1949 as a result of relationships between German women and American soldiers. Kaufmann's black GI father, whom he never knew, returned to the Us before he was born in Munich. According to Fassbinder: "Günther thinks Bavarian, feels Bavarian and speaks Bavarian. And that's why he gets a shock every morning when he looks in the mirror." Kaufmann, whom Fassbinder always called "my Bavarian negro", played an important role in his life.

Berlin -- The German boxoffice exploded in 2009, with homegrown features grabbing nearly a third of the receipts.
Boxoffice revenue jumped 22.8% to €976 million ($1.34 billion) last year, according to official figures released Wednesday by the German Federal Film Board. Ticket sales were up 13.1% to 146.3 million admissions.
German movies, from such mainstream commercial fare as "Vicky the Viking" and "Rabbit Without Ears 2" to "The White Ribbon" and similar art house fare, accounted for 27.4% of tickets sold, or 40 million admissions. While Hollywood held its own, thanks in particular to 3-D hits "Avatar," "Ice Age 3" and "Up," for the second year running, fewer than 100 million tickets were sold in Germany for U.S. films.
German films look set to continue their winning streak in 2010. Already this year, two German features -- East-West comedy "Friendship!" and Fatih Akin's "Soul Kitchen" -- have passed the 1 million admissions mark, the standard measure of a blockbuster in the territory.

London -- Irish-American "Tip" O'Neill once remarked that "all politics is local," an observation that almost certainly could have bannered the movie industry across Europe this year as the runners and riders gear up for 2010.
As the Speaker of the House of Representatives, O'Neill believed that accounting for -- and to -- your local constituency equated to political success. He was popular because he listened to his people.
And in every major territory across Europe -- from the U.K. to Germany, France, Italy and Spain -- the movie movers-and-shakers who have lived and died by the local sword in 2009 will be looking at 2010 as a year unlikely to bring change to that outlook.
The U.K. is set to break the billion-pound boxoffice threshold by the end of the year with admissions also beating last year's figures by the end of 2009, with production activity rising during 2009 from the previous year.

Berlin -- Germany's local production success continued this year -- according to figures released by Nielsen Edi Thursday, German-made movies accounted for more than a quarter of boxoffice receipts in 2009.
German films -- which include co-productions such as "The Reader" -- earned €226. 5 million ($325 million) from Jan. 1 – Dec.13, a 25.7% market share. As a percentage of total tickets sold, German films did even better. According to Nielsen, nearly a third -- 27% -- of all tickets sold in the territory, 35.8 million in total, were for local fare. That compares to 33.9 million for all of 2008.
Munich-based mini-major Constantin Film again dominated the local scene, with the top two German features: Michael "Bully" Herbig's kids comedy "Vicky the Viking" ($40 million boxoffice) and Sonke Wortmann's papal epic "Pope Joan" ($24 million). Stephen Daldry's "The Reader," which Senator Film released here, has earned around $21 million in Germany.

Cologne, Germany -- Til Schweiger has returned to his customary place at the top of the German boxoffice with his new film, "Zweiohrkuken" (TwoEarChick), which knocked vampire behemoth "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" into second slot in the territory.
Preliminary figures suggest "Zweiohrkuken" earned nearly $10 million in its opening weekend bow with around 850,000 tickets sold. "New Moon," which opened last week with a $17 million number one bow, secured a strong number two position in Germany with 525,000 tickets sold in its second weekend.
The performance of Schwieger's romantic comedy -- the sequel to his 2007 smash "Rabbit Without Ears" -- represents the second-best start this year for a German film -- behind children's title "Vicky The Viking" -- and is a personal best for the Teutonic multihyphenate (Schweiger directed, co-produced, co-wrote and stars in "Zweiohrkuken.")
"Rabbit Without Ears" bowed to just 450,000 viewers but went on to sell 6.3 million tickets for a $60 million boxoffice.

Cologne, Germany -- Sonke Wortmann's "Pope Joan" crowned Germany's boxoffice this weekend, one of seven German productions or co-productions to make the top ten.
The Constantin Film production, which stars Johanna Wokalek as a 9th century female pontiff, grossed $4.4 million in its first four days, with 370,000 admissions over 461 theaters. The German-Spanish-Italian co-production was shot in English and also stars John Goodman and David Wenham. Summit Entertainment is handling international sales.
German productions crowded out most imports. Simon Verhoeven's romantic comedy "Men In the City," came in at number three, just behind Disney animated family feature "G-Force." A Warner Bros. release, "Men" stars Christian Ulmen, Til Schweiger and Nadja Uhl and has grossed more than $10 million in its first three weeks.
Besides "G-Force," only two other Hollywood titles made the German top ten: "Up," which came in at number five in its fifth week in release and Sony's romcom "The Ugly Truth,...
