Plot: Thirty years after the events of the 1994 serial killer thriller Nightwatch, the daughter of two of the deeply damaged surviving characters takes her dad’s old job as night watchman at the Department of Forensic Medicine. Investigating the events that ruined her parents’ lives, she accidentally kicks off a new killing spree.
Review: Back in 1994, Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal brought the world a serial killer thriller called Nightwatch, about a young law student named Martin (played by future Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who takes a job as night watchman at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen and inadvertently gets mixed up in the investigation of the serial killer case that has been providing the morgue with a lot of fresh corpses. By the end of the film, Martin, his girlfriend Kalinka, and his best friend Jens have all had close calls with the killer, who is...

Exclusive: Susanne Bier’s baby snatching drama A Second Chance is finally coming to the United States after Rock Salt Releasing picked up the feature film, which stars Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
The film, which is produced by Zentropa, FilmFyn and Film I Vast, initially premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014 before being released in Denmark in 2015. However, with the issues surrounding children being separated from their parents front page news in the States, thanks to Donald Trump’s immigration policy, it’s getting a long-awaited theatrical bow in the U.S.
Rock Salt Releasing, the auteur-driven sales and distribution banner set up earlier this year by TriCoast Worldwide, struck the deal with Trustnordisk and it will get its first theatrical run in La in July as well as other selected theaters.

Maria Bonnevie, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Ulrich Thomsen have been added to the cast of Susanne Bier’s upcoming film A Second Chance.
The trio is joining Danish actor and Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who will play the leading role in Bier’s upcoming film.
According to the producers, the feature “focuses on how far decent human beings are willing to go, when tragedy blurs the line between just and unjust and how easily we lose our grasp on justice, when we face the unthinkable and life as we know it hangs by a thread.”
The film has just started shooting on location in Denmark.
Danish actor Nikolaj Lie Kaas recently played the role of Detective Carl Mørck in the local box office hit The Keeper of Lost Causes. He will next to be seen in the upcoming Child 44 playing opposite Tom Hardy and Joel Kinnaman.

On Wednesday (June 19), I had the great pleasure of talking to Marco Beltrami, composer of World War Z. It was really a thrill for me to speak to him because I am such a fan of composers and film scores.
A prolific, Italian-born film composer who had his start with the teen horror franchise “Scream,” Beltrami was raised in the U.S. and underwent intensive musical training both abroad and at Yale University, composing music for symphonies and dance ensembles before entering the world of film and television scoring with projects like “Hellboy” (2004) and blockbuster sequels such as “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” (2003).
Outside of his genre work, Beltrami held that contemporary film music should include a variety of musical styles and instruments, which he put to use with his critically acclaimed work on the Scandinavian film “I am Dina” (2002) before returning to mainstream films with his traditional sweeping...

Anton Sanko has signed on to score next year’s horror thriller The Possession. The movie directed by Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch, I Am Dina) stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a recently divorced father whose youngest daughter becomes strangely connected to an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. As the daughter’s behavior becomes more erratic, the father senses a dark presence building until he discovers that the box was built to contain a dibbuk – a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host. Kyra Sedgwick, Grant Show and Madison Davenport are co-starring in the film which was originally entitled Dibbuk Box. Sam Raimi and Bob Tapert are producing via Ghost House Pictures. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Knowing, Boogeyman) wrote the project’s screenplay. The Possession marks Sanko’s first major feature scoring assignment since last year’s drama Rabbit Hole which earned Nicole Kidman...

63 countries have now announced their Oscar submissions. Last year we had 65 films and the most ever, if my data is correct, was 2008 in which 67 countries competed for the coveted 5 slots. (If 10 is the number for Best Picture, shouldn't the corresponding prize for subtitled features, also be 10? ) In other words, numbers-wise, we're just about finished. The deadline has already passed but some countries are quiet about their submissions. The "official" official list will arrive any minute now... or next week depending on the speed with which AMPAS does their paperwork. Soon is the point.

It's one of my favorite films of the past few years and Ole Bornedal's Deliver Us From Evil will be hitting Toronto cinema screens starting on October 8th. This is one nasty, gripping piece of work and I cannot recommend it highly enough for all of you Toronto locals.
Normal 0 false false false En-ca X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Montreal, Wednesday September 22nd, 2010 - After its Canadian Premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, its Quebec Premiere at the 2010 Fantasia International Film Festival, and a theatrical release in Montreal where it garnered raving reviews, Deliver Us From Evil (original Danish title Fri Os Fra Det Onde) will finally be screening in Toronto from October 8th at the Carlton Theatre with an English subtitled copy. The animated short film Land Of The Heads, provided by the Nfb, will be playing beforehand.

Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal is no stranger to Hollywood. Thirteen years ago he remade his own horror film Nightwatch for Dimension Films, and that same year he was a producer on Guillermo del Toro's Mimic. But he didn't stick around much after 1997, returning instead to Europe to make the multinational English-language feature I Am Dina and more Danish films like The Substitute. Now he's finally returning to American cinema for an adaptation of Dean Koontz's 2006 thriller novel The Husband (via Variety), the plot of which seems on the surface to be your everyday, run of the mill kidnap/ransom story (but isn't). One morning, Southern California gardener Mitchell Rafferty gets a call on his cellphone from a stranger saying that Mitch's beloved wife, Holly, has been kidnapped and that he has less than three days to come up with $2 million in cash. Of course, he's warned not to...

And we've got a treat in store, says Gwladys Fouché. Stand by for not one but two hammy international biopics of a Hungarian aristo who bathed in the blood of virgins
There's nothing like a good, hot slab of Euro pudding. Where once we Europeans used to slaughter each other, now we come together to cook up Champagne Charlie and I Am Dina instead. It's the cinematic equivalent of Eurovision: all together in perfect disharmony.
The best Euro puddings are the ones with ambition. Sweeping sagas set in exotic locations with actors famous in their home countries trying to make it big internationally. I imagine producers hoping to unite Europe behind them and storm the box office, before realising the Hollywood machine will beat them once again.
And, praise be, there's a tasty example just coming out of the oven, dripping with epic scenes and celebrity actors eager for cash.
