Carla Gugino recently told BuzzFeed that her beloved role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2001 family action film “Spy Kids” was “physically totally impossible.” The actor was 27 years old when she filmed the movie and played Ingrid Cortes, the mother of two spies. By Gugino’s math, the character didn’t add up.
“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recounted. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”
“I love Ingrid Cortes. But it was funny because I was 10 years, at least, too young for the role because I was a spy for 10 years and then somehow had children who were like 9 and 11,” she continued with a laugh. “So it was physically totally impossible.”
Gugino starred in “Spy Kids” opposite Antonio Banderas, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. She said the movie had...

It’s a quiet month on Netflix in January, but the streamer still has some good stuff lined up for the new year, including an interesting documentary about the Centra Tech cryptocurrency scam. Bitconned arrives on the first of the month alongside Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Fool Me Once, which sees an ex-soldier called Maya witness her husband’s murder on a nanny cam. The crime then leads her down a deadly path where she uncovers a deadly conspiracy.
Schitt’s Creek star Daniel Levy will also debut his first film as writer and director with Good Grief on Netflix this month. The movie follows Levy’s character Marc as he does some soul-searching after the death of his husband.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Carmen, Juni, and the rest of the Cortez family are back for another butt-kicking spy adventure. In April, Netflix announced that Robert Rodriguez, the original director of the 2000s action films, signed on to write and direct an upcoming "Spy Kids" reboot movie. Skydance Media optioned the film rights to Netflix with the intention of reimagining the spy thriller for a modern audience, according to Variety.
Officially titled "Spy Kids: Armageddon," the new project will be the fifth installment in the "Spy Kids" franchise, following the original 2001 "Spy Kids" and it's three sequels: "Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," and "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World." Comic book movies are everywhere. At the beginning of the millennium, comic and graphic novel adaptations were uncommon, with the critical failure of "Batman and Robin" putting the breaks on many studios' plans for future superhero fare. Nowadays, we are spoiled by the veritable bounty of comic book re-imaginings, from the indomitable machine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the many spin-offs of "The Walking Dead" to the Oscar-winning success of "Joker." We live in a time where even "Madame Web" is getting a big-budget film. Truly, our cup runneth over.
Of course, the trend is currently for superheroes and hasn't expanded much beyond that limited subgenre. Comic books are like any other artistic medium: they encompass seemingly limitless potential across styles, themes, genres, and intents. There are exceptions, from the mundane realism of "Ghost World" and "American Splendor" to the rip-roaring golden age adventuring of "The Adventures of Tintin.

The idea for Hypnotic conceptualized around the time director Robert Rodriguez was filming Spy Kids 2, which is what he told the audience at Sunday night’s premiere screening. His love of Austin and SXSW is what brought him back 30 years after El Mariachi. This was a full-circle moment for him, and he revealed that this film is a work in progress. After watching it, Hypnotic still needs work in order to progress because this is all over the place. Written by Rodriguez (who also provided the score) and Matt Borenstein, the pic stars Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Jeff Fahey and Dayo Okeniyi.

As a fan greeted Robert Rodriguez during the Q&a of his latest film “Hypnotic” at the SXSW Film & TV festival, the fan recalled a story that after seeing Rodriguez’s breakthrough “El Mariachi” in 1992, he then immigrated to America and watched the TV movie “Roadracers” from 1994. And seeing Rodriguez’s name in the credits again made him perk up.
“I’m glad that guy got to make another movie,” the fan recalled thinking.
“I say that to myself too,” Rodriguez responded.
Because, though he’s directed three “Spy Kids” movies and most recently an expensive cult sci-fi like “Alita: Battle Angel,” there was a time when Rodriguez was a scrappy indie filmmaker unsure if he would get a second chance. And while his latest film “Hypnotic” may star Ben Affleck and other major stars, he told the crowd of largely fans at the Paramount Theater that the experience of...

The Oscars in Hollywood didn’t rain on Robert Rodriguez’s parade Sunday as the filmmaker debuted his long-in-the-works Hypnotic at SXSW’s Paramount Theatre, with crowds having to be turned away.
Much to Rodriguez’s relief, the $70 million Ben Affleck movie — which was delayed by Covid, shut down three times, slapped with an insurance lawsuit and saw its U.S. distributor Solstice Studios implode — received a rapturous response at the jam-packed Austin theatre. Throngs are definitely back here at SXSW.

Taylor Momsen is a name that many pop culture fans think of when they conjure up images of a child star. The young actor, who now focuses primarily on music, started acting in the early 2000s after a stint of appearances in commercials. Her high-profile role in How the Grinch Stole Christmas made her a household name, and she went on to act in several other major movies and TV shows. Unlike many other young actors, Momsen never loved the spotlight — and in the years following her ascent to fame, she opened up about how she “had no choice” in becoming a child star.

With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.
The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.
HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

“Do you think God stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he’s created?” Steve Buscemi’s Dr. Romero asks in the 2002 modern cinematic masterpiece, Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams.
It’s a valid question. One that I’ve been asking myself a lot this week as the “does Batman eat pussy” discourse continues across various social media platforms. It just got another shot in the arm from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League director Zack Snyder as it happens, because we live in a society.
A society that refuses to let DC besmirch the good name of Batman when it comes to orally pleasuring someone, apparently. That’s where we draw a line in the sand and say “not today.”

Netflix’s latest family movie has proven to be a huge hit with subscribers. We Can Be Heroes dropped on Christmas Day and so far, it’s believed that 44 million users have lapped up the superhero flick from director Robert Rodriguez. Given that stellar opening, it’s no surprise that the streaming giant quickly ordered a sequel, with Rodriguez revealed to be starting development on a second part soon.
The Spy Kids filmmaker confirmed the news himself on Twitter. “44 Million Families will have suited up for We Can Be Heroes in its first 4 weeks!! And… Breaking News: The Heroics are coming back for round two! I’m in full development of the sequel with @Netflix,” he wrote on social media. Fans were delighted by the news, as was one of the movie’s stars. Pedro Pascal retweeted Rodriguez’s post and added some praise for the man himself. “Cuz you’re a Boss!

Seven Diverse Scribes Selected For WGA East & FilmNation’s Inaugural New York Screenwriters Workshop
Seven women and minority writers have been selected to take part in the inaugural New York Screenwriters Workshop – a six-month intensive program that focuses on professional development for diverse, emerging screenwriters in the greater New York City area.
The workshop is a partnership between the WGA East and FilmNation Entertainment, a New York City-based producer, financier and distributor of independent films and television.
“Even during this pandemic, screenplays are still being written and projects are being developed,” said WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson. “The guild is thrilled to partner with FilmNation on a project that will open doors to under-represented screenwriters. The strides we make in creating opportunities for people to build careers despite historic exclusion helps build an industry that is both fair and sustainable. This program is an important part of the Wgae’s efforts to make the film and television industry more inclusive and equitable.”

The Spy Kids are all grown up!
Nearly 20 years after starring in the 2001 Robert Rodriguez film, Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega came together on Monday for a special remote reunion thanks to Sabara’s wife, Meghan Trainor!
Trainor, 26, staged the virtual get-together during an Instagram Live on her account. She and her husband had just rewatched the original movie — one of four Spy Kids films Sabara and PenaVega starred in together — and were answering questions for about 40 minutes before PenaVega appeared as a surprise special guest.

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” John Krasinski, who is red-hot following the success of his winter hit “A Quiet Place,” takes on the role of the CIA spy that has been played on the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including the action comedy “Gringo,” which stars David Oyelowo as a businessman who unwittingly becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel.
Unlike Netflix, Amazon does not disclose the shows and movies leaving the service in any given month. We’ve done some digging and unearthed a few titles that will be exiting Amazon Prime Video in the first week of August. News...

When Marvel unveiled its surprise announcement at the end of its lengthy panel at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, it felt like something of an anticlimax, and not just because Tom Hiddleston had just been on stage moments earlier in fully Loki regalia (wouldn't have been more exciting if he had come out dressed as his character from "War Horse?") Joss Whedon, the balding, brilliant whiz behind the $1 billion-grossing "Avengers," trotted out on stage in what appeared to be hand-me-down sneakers, to announce the title of the "Avengers" sequel, due in theaters in 2015. The movie would be called "The Avengers: Age of Ultron."
Uh what?
For those who were not born with a lifetime subscription to Starlog Magazine, the puzzlement sent in almost immediately. Who (or what) is Ultron? Why is this a whole "Age?" How long is this movie supposed to be? For those of us who own a...

Arriving on home video today, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World offers a combination sequel/reboot to Robert Rodriguez's hugely successful "Spy Kids" franchise, launched with the original Spy Kids in 2001 and followed by Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams in 2002 and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over in 2003. All the Time in the World offers a new round of pint-sized spies (Mason Cook and Rowan Blanchard) who learn that their stepmother (Jessica Alba) is secretly a top-level spy facing a villain known as The Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven). Armed with high-tech gadgets (including a robotic dog, Argonaut, voice by Ricky Gervais), the new Spy Kids wind up teaming with the two originals (the decidedly more grown up Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) to protect the world from his evil...

The best thing on the board this week isn't one of the top featured titles, instead it's The Godfather and The Godfather Part II in a Two-Pack Blu-ray release for only $19.99. It's in the "Even More" section following the first two titles or you can click here and just buy it now. Unless you own them already... why wouldn't you? That's a solid deal and you don't even have to justify buying the trilogy, which is comparatively priced at $48.89. Is The Godfather Part III really worth $28.90? I don't think so.
Rio I look at the 72% RottenTomatoes rating for this film and am just baffled. Rio is a half-rate Finding Nemo meets Madagascar (the latter of which I truly dislike) and when it does attempt to be something special it comes up lacking. You can read my full theatrical review right here,...

Chicago – Before you spend your hard-earned cash taking the entire family to see “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World,” you might as well catch up with the original “trilogy,” the very-popular series of films that most of us assumed were the end of this mediocre franchise. Don’t get me wrong — the first “Spy Kids” is actually a very fun movie and totally worth owning for Blu-ray buyers with kids of the right age but the two sequels are mediocre and annoying, respectively. Still, kids like to have complete collections and all of the films are hitting Blu-ray this week extras-packed HD editions with digital copies. Now you can take these precocious mini-Bonds anywhere.

It's tough when you discover your pre-teen daughter is kissing boys, especially when it's on the big-screen. Alexa Vega was just twelve-years-old when she filmed "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" (she's now 22). TooFab caught up with Vega and her mother Gina leaving the lia sophia event in Hollywood Tuesday, and asked them about the on-screen smooch. Because Alexa was underage, producers had to obtain Gina's permission for the kiss. She how mama Vega reacted to their request, below: If you think Gina looks amazing despite having a 22-year-old daughter, it's because she was a former model. Our cameraman even joked she and Alexa looked like sisters. Alexa has a guest role in the latest "Spy Kids" movie, "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World," starring Jessica Alba. Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega have game in Spy Kids 3: Game Over.
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s latest addition to his children’s movie franchise, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, arrives in theaters on Aug. 19, and Lionsgate is cashing in with the release of the original three movies on high-definition Blu-ray on Aug. 2.

I'm sick of it," said Gervais. The film is directed and written by Robert Rodriguez and will be released in 3D nationwide on August 19, 2011. Graphic violence, sexy women, tongue-in-cheek satire, broad wackiness, and a powerfully eclectic cast are what you'll generally find in the man's films, and with that in mind...
5. 'Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams'
The Movie: There was still a lot of charm left in the franchise when Part 2 of the family-friendly adventure series made its appearance. Some (like me) like it better than Part 1.
The DVD: The sequel has one thing the original does not: a DVD overflowing with extra features: the director offers his typically engaging "film school" stuff, but there's also some bonus goodies for the kids to enjoy.

The It Crowd is back, Doctor Who is finishing, Firefly gets a rerun and the awesome Anvil is on the telly. Plus films! Lots of films!
Now, this is more like it! After a couple weeks of tepid telly waters, the floodgates open, with a new launch, massive finales, a worthy repeat or two and an excellent documentary to look forward to in the next seven days.
Firstly, The It Crowd is back for its fourth season tonight, June 25th, at 10:00pm on Channel 4 with Jen The Fredo. Jen's latest attempt to escape the confines of the basement It department, even temporarily, sees her take on a part-time position as Entertainments Manager. Ignoring the warnings of techies Moss and Roy, she finds the job is not for her. But a bit of role reversal and a game of role playing will soon sort things out in the Graham Linehan scripted series return.

Robert Rodriguez is getting ready to shoot "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World," and Erc BoxOffice says the film will hit theaters via Dimension Films Aug. 19, 2011. I bet it will open in 3D as well. Word is Rodriguez will reboot the franchise, which also means we could be in for more sequels. The question is: do we want to see another "Spy Kids"? I enjoyed the first and second, but the third sucked.
"Spy Kids" opened in 2001 and bagged $112 million on a $35 million budget. "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" hit cinemas in 2002 and earned $85 million (budget was $39 million). Finally, "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" was released in 2003, and it generated $111 million. It too cost $39 million. So yeah, in terms of money, it makes sense for Dimension to make a fourth one. Personally, I couldn't care less about this.

Two long-awaited sequels, Scream 4 and Spy Kids 4, now officially have release dates. Scream 4 is set to debut April 15, 2011, while Spy Kids 4 is scheduled for Aug. 19, 2011, distributor The Weinstein Company announced today.
Scream 4 will be brought to the screen by the franchise's creators, director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson, and will feature series regulars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette and David Arquette. The first Scream was a surprise hit in 1996, grossing $103.1 million. Following its success, Scream 2 was quickly put together and banked $101.3 million a year later. Scream 3 was released more than two years later, and its slightly lower $89.1 million take seemed to put an end to the series for the time being. Worldwide, all three movies made over $500 million combined.
While nearly all future horror movies are getting the 3D treatment, it's unclear at the moment if Scream 4 will as well. It...

Every year, it seems, there are omissions from the "In Memoriam" tribute at the Academy Awards that get fans up in arms. Two years ago, it was troubled actor Brad Renfro, whose image was not among those shown during the show, following his death of a drug overdose the month before the 2008 program. His absence was explained at the time as an unintentional result of the limited space available during the segment.
Sunday night's Oscar show left one major name off the list: Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actress and former "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett, who died in June at the age of 62 after a long fight with cancer. While her death was somewhat overshadowed by that of Michael Jackson,...
