“In many ways,” Brooks Barnes and Nicole Sperling write at The New York Times, “the 93rd Oscars amounted to a celebration of diversity.” Postponed from the usual February slot to Sunday, April 25, no longer held in the iconic Dolby Theatre but in Los Angeles’s Union Station, and helmed by director Steven Soderbergh (who co-produced the event with Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher), the 2021 Academy Awards was an edition of historic firsts. Judging by the nominations alone, Shirley Li argues at The Atlantic, “the Oscars already had enough newness this year to prove its thesis that it deserves a future.”Nine of the twenty acting noms went to people of color, who nabbed two of the four awards. Riz Ahmed was the first Muslim nominee for Best Actor; Youn the first Korean actress to get an acting nod (and the first to win). Seventy women were nominated across all categories—the largest number ever.

Jackie Shroff, who was last seen in the forgettable Dilli Waali Zaalim Girlfriend, is one happy man today. The reason? Well, he not only joins the cast of Sanjay Gupta's much talked about film Jazbaa, but also will be reuniting with none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, with whom he was last seen in (although not paired opposite each other) Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas. Speaking about it, Jackie said he has an interesting role in Jazbaa. He added that, with this film, he was reuniting with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after a long gap of 13 years. This film also sees the reunion of Jackie with Sanjay Gupta. The last time Sanjay directed Jackie was in 2000 with Jung. Besides Aishwarya and Jackie, Jazbaa also stars Irrfan Khan, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher and Chandan Roy Sanyal in prominent roles.

Celluloid versus digital film-making – hardly a blockbuster proposition, but this surprisingly fascinating documentary makes you think twice about how movies are made, and seen. It also gives you a rare audience with the top technicians and film-makers out there (Scorsese, Cameron, Lucas, Nolan, Von Trier, Lynch, etc), while host Keanu Reeves keeps things informal and accessible.

The Descendants (15)
(Alexander Payne, 2011, Us) George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Robert Forster. 115 mins
A sideways move from Sideways takes Payne on another tour of masculine crises, though this has mellowed and matured for longer. Family issues jolt Clooney out of his Hawaiian comfort zone. His wife's sudden coma puts him in charge of their two daughters, and brings their marriage into perspective, while his control of the ancestral estate adds to the burden. It's a well-rooted drama of great performances and big themes (and probably big awards).
Like Crazy (12A)
(Drake Doremus, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence. 90 mins
Young love sees no colour, but it must abide by visa regulations in this cross-Atlantic romantic saga, which tests a couple's endurance in an offbeat, indie style.
The Grey (15)
(Joe Carnahan, 2012, Us) Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. 117 mins
Liam Neeson v wolves – seems like a good match.

He is making his debut as a director with the upcoming Dabangg but he is not new to this industry in any way. Abhinav Kashyap assisted in the making of 2004 film Yuva; he wrote the dialogues for Manorama Six Feet Under and 13B, he also co-wrote the film Jung. All said and done, making a debut and that too with Salman Khan is definitely something to talk about and an experience worth recording. Creating a character like Chulbul Pandey and showcasing Sallu bhai in a never seen before avatar has taken the entire nation by storm. If we say it's the most awaited film till now, it would be a massive understatement. Bollywood Hungama gives all you Dabangg fans an exclusive opportunity to chat up with director Abhinav Kashyap. Log on to our celebrity video chat on Wednesday, September 8, at 1500 hrs Ist and ask him all your questions!
