LONDON -- BBC Worldwide, the commercial wing of the U.K. pubcaster, said Monday that it will review its licensing deals with food manufacturers in order to promote healthy eating and reject junk products. The new rules govern 45 licenses for brands and properties for which BBC Worldwide controls the rights, including Teletubbies, Tweenies, Fimbles, Andy Pandy and Bill & Ben. The company said it had worked with the Food Standards Agency to establish new guidelines with regard to the clarity of labeling, the use of additives, preservatives, flavorings, colorings and sweeteners.
LONDON -- BBC Worldwide dismissed Thursday criticism over its plan to launch a classical music record label, saying that the commercial venture's output will not get preferential treatment by BBC stations. BBC Worldwide's music division plans to launch a classical and generalist music label under the Inversion Records tag, hoping to spot and exploit unsigned talent. The pubcaster has previously enjoyed considerable success with a wide range of musical releases relating to such BBC shows as Bob the Builder and The Tweenies, as well as the BBC Legends series featuring stars such as the Who. But Inversion will be the first label to actively talent-spot artists, putting it directly in competition with a range of other commercial music companies.

LONDON -- Buena Vista International Television has poached Alison Homewood, BBC Worldwide's deputy managing director, Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, to take its new post as head of European sales. Homewood, who helped transform such BBC properties as Teletubbies, Walking With Dinosaurs and Tweenies into global brands, will take on the role of BVITV vp sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), BVITV managing director Tom Toumazis said Monday. Homewood replaces Doug Miller, who left BVI's London office at the beginning of the year to head its Asian sales operations. Reporting to Toumazis, Homewood will join BVITV in early May and lead the EMEA sales force through the international upfronts and May Screenings, when BVITV expects to unveil a strong slate of television series for the international market.
CANNES -- BBC Worldwide, the sales arm of the British pubcaster, announced several children's programming sales and factual/natural history co-productions on the first day of MIPTV. BBC Worldwide also announced a slate of major co-production deals with Discovery, Austrian broadcaster ORF and Germany's ZDF. The news came as BBC Worldwide chief executive Rupert Gavin noted that BBC Worldwide's total media exports rose 13% to $362 million from $322 million last year, now accounting for 54% of the total U.K. export market.
