The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival has been plunged into chaos a month before its 2024 edition.
The opening press conference in Toronto on Tuesday was overshadowed by news that the Hot Docs artistic director, Hussain Currimbhoy, and 10 programmers had left the festival organizing team ahead of the 2024 edition kicking off on April 25.
Hot Docs in a festival statement confirmed Currimbhoy’s departure as artistic director on March 20, “due to personal reasons.” “Regrettably, some members of the programming team have decided not to participate in this year’s festival. We thank them for their contributions,” the documentary festival added.
Their departure forced Hot Docs president Marie Nelson — the former ABC News and Disney exec who took the helm at the Canadian festival in June 2023 — onto the back foot when she stepped forward to unveil the lineup for the 2024 edition.

Coleman Hough, who received solo screenplay credit on the quirky Steven Soderbergh-directed improvisational films Full Frontal and Bubble, has died. She was 62.
Hough died Feb. 24 at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, her friend Jennifer Romine told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s when she was 42.
Full Frontal (2002), set in Hollywood and a film within a film, shot in 18 days using a consumer-grade digital camera and was the first produced screenplay by playwright and poet Hough.
Featuring Julia Roberts, Catherine Keener, David Hyde Pierce, Blair Underwood, David Duchovny and Jeff Garlin as a Harvey Weinstein type, it marked an extreme change of pace for Soderbergh, who was coming off Erin Brockovich (2000), an Oscar win for Traffic (2000) and Ocean’s Eleven (2001).

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

Chris McCarthy has a big decision to make.
Nearly twelve months on to the day that Trevor Noah said goodbye to The Daily Show, the Comedy Central series still does not have a permanent host.
But a decision is expected soon with sources telling Deadline that Paramount is facing pressure to name a new host by the end of the year.
There have been a number of shortlists and stars mentioned throughout the process, which was hampered by the writers and actors strike, and obviously there was the Hasan Minhaj situation, where the Patriot Act star basically had the job before that New Yorker article came out.
But many in the late-night and comedy community believe that McCarthy and his team already have viable options right under their noses and with it the opportunity to shake-up the talk show landscape with a fresh take and in the process bolster diversity...

X’s Unique Un-Sales Strategy: CEO Linda Yaccarino Woos Advertisers; Owner Elon Musk Drives Them Away
If movie and TV studios get nervous about advertising, so should everyone else.
Advertisers loathe controversy, and often “pull” or “yank” their commercials from individual pieces of content that generate it. But the studios have stiffer spines. They don’t run garden-variety commercials, but rather trailers and sneak previews of much-anticipated TV programs, and their target consumer is typically young men, who often don’t feel the outrage of advocacy groups eager to spur boycotts of a cable-news channel, a scripted series with a controversial star; or a reality program that offends. Studios don’t often feel the need to stop running their ads, particularly when an opening weekend’s box office tally might be at stake. In 2018, when many advertisers suspended their support of comedian Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” on TBS following a joke she made about Ivanka Trump, then the daughter of the then-u.S. President, Comcast...

The 2000s were a great time for science fiction. Thanks to The Matrix closing out the 90s, studios were more willing to give the green light to stories about science gone awry, leading to favorites such as A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Paprika, as well as superhero hits like Spider-Man 2, X2, and Iron Man.

It’s been so long since Steven Soderbergh announced his recut of Kafka––so long since the thing even premiered at TIFF––that one could assume it was no longer in play. But reemergence, it seems, is in store: Indiewire have announced the U.S. premiere of his new edition, Mr. Kneff, will occur at Nitehawk’s Prospect Park location on November 9, with a complimentary cocktail made from Soderbergh’s Signani 63 offered. Tickets are now on-sale.
The official synopsis is scant: “A writer guy in 1919 Prague uses his dead-end job as inspiration for his fantastical fiction.” But the extent of Soderbergh’s revision is huge: the movie’s lost 20 minutes and, what’s more, all dialogue––silent-movie accompaniment includes an instrumental of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
If you (like me) aren’t in New York on November 9, it’s comfort to know Nitehawk’s premiere shouldn’t be the end of the road.

Steven Soderbergh’s “Mr. Kneff” is finally landing stateside.
The recut version of 1991’s “Kafka” stars Jeremy Irons as a writer in 1919 Prague; the film has had new iterations unveiled in 2013 and 2021, respectively. Now, Soderbergh is revealing the first ever U.S. screening of the 2021 recut “Kafka,” titled “Mr. Kneff.” The premiere will take place at Nitehawk Cinema in Prospect Park on November 9 at 7 p.m.
The official logline of “Mr. Kneff” reads: “A writer guy in 1919 Prague uses his dead-end job as inspiration for his fantastical fiction.” Jeremy Irons, Theresa Russell, Joel Grey, Ian Holm, Jeroen Krabbé, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Alec Guinness star in the cult classic which marked Soderbergh’s sophomore directorial effort after “sex, lies, and videotape.” Soderbergh will participate in a Q&a following the U.S. premiere.

Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe have found their next act.
The Oscar-winning duo behind police brutality short Two Distant Strangers and, more recently, HBO’s Bs High, have teamed with Group Nine Studios’ former president Mickey Meyer to launch a new entertainment company titled The Unreasnble. The goal of the full-service media company is to develop, produce, finance and incubate stories that have had historically limited access to mainstream media.
“The work stoppages and battles we recently experienced and are still experiencing across our industry for fair and equitable pay and ownership of our work is a clear sign we can no longer adapt to the ways of this business,” explains Free, “but instead we have to adapt it to us, the creators, and that’s what we intend to do.”

Bill Maher has faced a lot of criticism after revealing that he was bringing Real Time back to HBO next week.
Called out by a slew of striking writers on social media, the WGA called the move “disappointing” and said that they would picket the show on its return.
But the other question that Maher’s move provoked was whether the remaining late-night hosts – The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Late Night’s Seth Meyers and Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver – would make a similar move.
As it stands, the answer seems to be a hearty ‘No’.

Meyers has been hosting NBC’s Late Night for nearly ten years, starting a week after Jimmy Fallon began his stint helming The Tonight Show. Other than Jimmy Kimmel, who has been on air for over 20 years, the NBC pair’s shows have been on air longer than The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and has seen off the likes of Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, James Corden on The Late Late Show and Samantha Bee on Full Frontal, who all started after him.

Exclusive: The late-night community is over the moon after it emerged that there will be five Emmy nominations this year.
Emmy voting opened today, and Deadline understands that there are 19 submissions in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, far more than expected, which, given the math, means that there will be five nominations this year.
One late-night source told Deadline this was “unexpected” but a “positive” move, meaning that that the sector no longer has to lament the loss of another Emmy slot.
Given that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been moved to the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category this year after seven consecutive wins for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, it is a boon for The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!

John Oliver will not be picking up his eighth straight Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series at this September’s gala.
The Last Week Tonight host will instead be battling it out with Saturday Night Live, and potentially A Black Lady Sketch Show, in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category after the TV Academy made a number of changes at the end of last year.
The move means the late-night talk show Emmy race will crown another victor – the first non-Oliver win since The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won the award in 2015. Ironically, Stewart is now back in the same category with his Apple series, The Problem with Jon Stewart, after moving from the Outstanding Hosted Non-Fiction Series category.

James Corden is leaving The Late Late Show much like he entered: with a bang.
Corden kicked off his first show on March 23, 2015 with a coup. He managed to persuade Tom Hanks to perform his entire filmography in an episode that also featured appearances from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock and Meryl Streep.
Having spent the past eight years driving and singing with A-listers such as Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Michelle Obama, passing Penny Lane with Paul McCartney and jumping out of a plane with Tom Cruise, he’s closing his CBS late-night show Thursday with guests including Harry Styles and Will Ferrell as well as a musical performance with Cruise during The Lion King at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood.
“The nature of our show is we really want to go out with a bang,” he tells Deadline. “We want to go out in the same manner that we came in.

Okay, I admittedly came in hot by calling the folks at Comedy Central "cowards" in that headline, because that's probably not the correct word to use to describe a channel that has been letting Trey Parker and Matt Stone run wild for over 25 years. When it was announced last fall that Trevor Noah would be leaving "The Daily Show" after seven fantastic years, fans immediately started fantasy booking his successor. There was a big push for Samantha Bee, of the recently canceled "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" to become the show's first full-time female host, with others hoping the job went to one of Noah's roll of correspondents. Exclusive: Nearly a year after her late-night show came to an end, Samantha Bee is continuing to offer some choice words, this time in podcasting.
The Full Frontal host is launching a new podcast series, Choice Words, with Lemonada Media.
The weekly series, which launches on June 1, will see Bee sit down with celebrities, politicians, and everyone in between to discuss the biggest choices they’ve made in their lives and the ripple effects those decisions have had.
Bee will also dig into why so many of our current issues stem not just from what we aren’t allowed to do, but that we are denied actual choice in the matter. Topics will range from what to eat for breakfast and which subway car to take, to who you are voting for and what you do with your body.

John Oliver has fired the first shot at his new Emmy rival Saturday Night Live – six months before his show Last Week Tonight will go head-to-head in a new awards category.
The British comedian, whose show returns for its tenth season on February 19, posted a hosting announcement to his social media channels that looks an awful lot like the ones that Saturday Night Live posts when they make a score a new host.
In the past, this wouldn’t have got any attention but given the fact that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the last seven years, will now compete directly against SNL, which has won the Emmy for Variety Sketch Series for the past six years, it feels like shots fired.
Whether he’ll actually have a horse on the show is anyone’s guess, but don’t rule it out.

Samantha Bee is set to host a Canadian Screen Awards one-hour special. The country’s national film and TV awards will not be broadcast or streamed live this year, as happened pre-pandemic.
Instead, the former host of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee will emcee a pre-taped, one-hour special, The Canadian Screen Awards with Samantha Bee. The recap show will feature celebrity interviews and highlights from prize giving during CSA award shows held in private and in person for the first time in four years.
Canadians featured during the TV special will include Ryan Reynolds, Catherine O’Hara and Simu Liu, who will receive special awards during this year’s CSAs. Last year, the national awards show handed out top prizes during a one-hour virtual awards show on the CBC and CBC Gem that had no TV commercials and saw winners mostly accepting trophies remotely from their homes.

The creators behind series “Tuca & Bertie,” “Gordita Chronicles,” and “Whistleblower” have issued statements alleging the Warner Bros. Discovery merger has had disastrous effects on female Poc showrunners.
The statements, published as an addendum to a December 21 Writers Guild of America report on the effects of mega-mergers, are titled “How the Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Hurts Workers and Diversity.” The report claims the Wbd merger de-prioritized female-led series featuring stars of color and ultimately led to the shows’ cancellations.
“The casualties of this mega-merger include numerous projects created by, featuring and/or centering the experiences of women and people of color,” the statement reads, citing multiple projects “including ‘Batgirl,’ one of very few mainstream superhero films to feature a Latina lead actress; ‘Full Frontal’ with Samantha Bee, one of a handful of woman-hosted late-night shows; ‘Gordita Chronicles,’ a series about a Dominican immigrant family whose showrunner was a Latina woman; ‘Tuca & Bertie,...

Samantha Bee has lined up her first post “Full Frontal” project: She and former CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien are creating a comedic docuseries about the crisis in women’s healthcare in the U.S., O’Brien confirmed to TheWrap on Monday.
Bee, whose TBS series was cancelled in June after seven seasons, devoted several segments to abortion rights on “Full Frontal.” O’Brien has produced and hosted CNN documentaries such as “Black in America,” which touched on the fact that Black women in America are three times more likely to die due to pregnancy complications than white women.
According to Deadline, which first reported the story, Bee’s Swimsuit Competition and O’Brien’s Sob Productions were already developing the series when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In the far-reaching wake of the historic judicial decision, the two decided to also host. The still untitled series will be...

And now some news about the news program that covers the news.
“Reliable Sources,” the media-news program that has been on CNN since 1993, is the latest piece of content to go on the chopping block under the cost-cutting regime of Warner Bros. Discovery. The show, which has evolved from a dusty public affairs program in its earliest days to a lean-forward show that often took on Fox News and President Donald Trump under former CNN chief Jeff Zucker, will broadcast its last episode on Sunday, August 21. Its anchor, Brian Stelter, will leave the company.
“We appreciate his contributions to the network and wish him well as he embarks on new endeavors,” CNN said in a statement. CNN parted ways with another veteran presence, legal affairs analyst Jeffrey Toobin, last week.

Joan Rivers, Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, Mo’Nique, Robin Thede — each name is another note in the long, sad dirge of canceled female late-night talk show hosts. And now, as of last month, add Samantha Bee to that sorry list. TBS nixed her show, “Full Frontal,” after seven seasons, as ratings dwindled to just 2.9 million viewers a night in 2021. Her exit leaves only two women left hosting late-night shows: Amber Ruffin on Peacock and Ziwe on HBO. All of which raises an obvious question: Does the industry have a built-in bias against women? While late-night has chewed up and spit out a number of shows hosted by men — including Chevy Chase, whose show famously ended after only five weeks — the industry seems to be particularly difficult for women to break into and even harder to survive. Rivers’ ’80s show on Fox didn’t even last a full year, while subsequent late-night forays from Goldberg,...

Greetings from Variety Awards Headquarters! Today is August 12, 2022, which means final round voting begins today, followed by 10 days until final round voting ends on August 22. Then comes the finales: It’s 22 days until the Creative Arts Emmys kicks off its two-night event on September 3; and then it’s 31 days until the 74th Emmy Awards takes place, live on NBC, September 12.
We Have A Host! We Have A Host! And it was the most obvious — and perfect — choice for NBC this year. As the number of major late-night shows continue to shrink, so does the Television Academy’s window to figure out how to handle the variety talk and variety sketch categories. After the org faced massive blowback in 2020 when it attempted to re-merge talk and sketch (reversing that plan after producers cried foul), it has resisted making any more changes. But given the monumental shift going on in the genre, the Academy will have no choice but map out new rules for 2023.
The recent, tremendously disappointing news that “Desus & Mero” and “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” — two of the few late-night shows not hosted by middle-aged white dudes — have officially ended, further shrinks next year’s Emmy submission pool. When Full Frontal launched on TBS in 2016, host Samantha Bee’s publicity tour was dogged by questions about her show signifying a shift in the late night comedy space — a space dominated by white men named Jimmy.
It was a media obsession that she tweaked in the premiere, which began with faux reporters peppering her with queries like: “Is it hard breaking into the boys’ club?” and “What’s it like as a female woman?”
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee — an opportunity long overdue for a host who watched as a string of fellow Daily Show correspondents got their own platforms ahead of her — truly was a breakout. It won awards and prompted conversation and controversy.
Though white men named Jimmy still dominate, the late night landscape that Bee leaves now isn’t the same as the one she arrived in; it’s more inclusive.

What led to TBS’ decision to pull the plug on “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” after seven seasons? An unlucky mix of low ratings, the shifting political climate post-Trump, a shakeup in comedy after the Warner Bros’ merger with Discovery — and lingering fallout from her Ivanka Trump incident of 2018. The death of the show, which frequently took shots at the Trumps and the Supreme Court, was skewered by conservatives like Glenn Greenwald who dismissed “Full Frontal” as “a feminist legacy as trivial and inconsequential as it was failed and pointless.” Also Read: ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’ Canceled at TBS After 7 Seasons Well that’s unkind, but late night has arguably never been a welcoming environment for women: Joan Rivers, who became the first woman to host a late-night talk show in 1986, had a one-year run before seeing the show taken over by a man. When James Corden cuts ties with CBS’ “Late Late Show” next year, he may leave with more than people expected.
CBS is considering replacing Corden’s distinct program with a multi-host panel, according to three people familiar with the matter, a sign of how late-night is changing as viewers sample the best of the programs via social media rather than watching them in their wee-hours’ time slot. Corden has decided to leave “The Late Late Show” in the spring of 2023. A panel format could encompass a wide range of concepts, such as the news-roundtable program “Politically Incorrect,” which Bill Maher led on ABC late-nights between 1997 and 2002; the gossipy “Chelsea Lately” that was led by Chelsea Handler on E! between 2007 and 2014; or even the frenetic game-show stylings of “@midnight,” which aired in late night on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017.

In the wake of the school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, TBS’ “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has turned its sights on the National Rifle Association (NRA). On Thursday’s episode, Bee tracked the development of the NRA over the years from its origins to the more familiar institution we know today. “Full Frontal” correspondent Amy Hoggart also headed to Houston for the NRA’s annual convention, which took place just four days after the tragic event and just 300 miles away from Uvalde.
“It’s really happy inside,” one attendee said of the mood at the convention. “It’s kind of like a little party. It’s pretty sweet.”
When asked about the Uvalde shooting, another NRA convention attendee said that “everyone is extremely upset about the timing” and that it was “incredibly, incredibly awkward.” Noting that the shooting took place during an election week and right before the annual event,...

The 74th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday, one of the last guild stops of Oscar season (the American Society of Cinematographers Awards were the same night). Did they provide clarity on two of the closest Oscar contests, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay?
The thing about the WGA Awards, of course, is that the guild’s rigid rules stipulate that only members can compete, rendering numerous Oscar contenders ineligible every year. And there were quite a few this go-round. Ineligible original scripts include “Annette,” “Belfast,” “A Hero,” “Mass,” “Parallel Mothers,” “Pig” and “The Worst Person in the World.” Adapted screenplays forced to sit out include “Cyrano,” “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter,” “Passing” and “The Power of the Dog.”
In original, the WGA nominated “Being the Ricardos” (Aaron Sorkin), “Don’t Look Up” (Adam McKay & David Sirota), “The French Dispatch” (Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola & Hugo Guinness & Jason Schwartzman...

Lenard McKelvey, the talk show host better known to the world at large as Charlamagne Tha God, last Friday returned to his new TV job after taking a quick Thanksgiving vacation. He wasted no time in showing he was back at work.
Over the course of an opening segment in his half-hour show, “Tha God’s Honest Truth With Lenard ‘Charlamagne’ McKelvey,” Charlamagne lashed out at both actor Jussie Smollett and the court system that seeks to put him in jail for allegedly faking a mugging in Chicago. Even “Jeopardy,” the celebrated game show that recently used his new program as one of its more difficult pieces of trivia, wasn’t spared. “I always want to be the most difficult question for white people to answer,” Charlamagne said during the show. “I love being that Black.”
Before anyone could express shock or surprise, the host started to talk about “vanilla vigilantes,...
