Inspector Henderson Puts On A Show
THe stock market has been closed for an hour, and the brokers are still trying to put through orders from their customers. One of them remarks that the clients are going mad. Robert Shayne (whom I remember best from the SUPERMAN TV show as Inspector Henderson) says he'll do something about it. The next day, when the market is getting to the customers, a variety show appears in the office.
The acts include a group singing a novelty song, two tap dancers, a children's band performing "Cielito Lindo" and ends with Martha Tilton.
It's another of the bizarre variety shorts distributed by Columbia in the 1930s, with Milton Schwartzwald directing the musical numbers. When sound first appeared, the studios would produce short subjects that featured individual acts to replace the live shows that the bigger theaters would run between the movies. By this time, they had often become miniature vaudeville shows, with some bit of a story to explain how ithey came to be put on. Of all of the twenty or so I have seen so far, this one is the most bizarre set-up!
