- DCS Christopher Foyle is an excellent police officer whose repeated requests for transfer to the military have been refused. Feelings are running high against Germans and the government is sending enemy aliens to internment camps. It's May 1940, and Foyle, accompanied by his newly assigned driver Samantha Stewart, investigates the murder of Greta Beaumont, a German national married to the rich and influential Henry Beaumont. There are many suspects: her step-daughter, with whom she constantly bickered and the girl's fiancé, whom she dislikes; a former employee, now in the army, whose uncle has been interned; and the parents of a local girl who was killed in a bombing raid. When a second murder occurs, Foyle determines that one of the principals has been lying. Foyle's son Andrew visits for a few days and announces that he's been called up and will be undergoing pilot training in the RAF. Foyle also recruits a new sergeant, Paul Milner, who was severely wounded in the Norway campaign and has lost a leg.—garykmcd
