- Bitsie Tullock: There have been times when Artoo has been promiscuous. However understanding I try to be, I just... I can't accept that. My parents raised me not to accept being cheated on by a robot.
- George Lucas: The original script described R2-D2 as a trash can on wheels. So when I first saw him, I said "Ahh. This guy's perfect. I hope he speaks English."
- Richard Dreyfuss: I don't think he's an actor. I think he's a personality. Notice that nobody else hires him. Notice *that*.
- Steven Spielberg: I first met Artoo in 1976. I was visiting George's company at his studio. I was drinking some water and decided to throw my styroform cup away. I went over to the trash can in the corner, but the lid wouldn't come up. So I kicked it a few times. It began to squeak and bleep and make all these noises. I kicked it three or four times and it fell over. And George came over and said "What are you doing to Artoo?" And I said, "Well, I was trying to throw my styroform cup away in this trash can." And he said, "That's not a trash can. That's Artoo-Detoo!"
- George Lucas: There was a point where we had a very difficult time. I kinda lost it a little bit. And I did light up a blow torch in front of him. But I didn't use it.
- Samuel L. Jackson: I'm not so sure if that accent is the real deal. Homeboy's probably from Detroit or something.
- Candy Clark: I always liked short guys and Artoo was my ultimate short guy. He had that one great eye. I *loved* looking into that eye.
