Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Thankfully recovering after a brutal bout with Covid-19, Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev will return with Jupiter. Variety reports the “politically-minded movie” tells the story of “a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future,” with a shoot set in Spain and France this spring. “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme, and through this prism we can look at any cultural landscape or historical era,” the director said.
Following Summer 1993 and Alcarràs, Carla Simon is prepping a summer shoot for the final entry in her trilogy with the flamenco musical Romería. Speaking to Variety, the director said, “Since I discovered that my biological mother was passionate about flamenco, a great curiosity began to grow in me for this genre, because of its history and its exceptional capacity to connect directly with emotion.” She added “This time music and dance will become the challenge...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

If you were looking for someone who relishes the notion of kicking ass, it’s hard to imagine anyone more willing to do so than Swedish model turned actress Frida Gustavsson, who plays Freydis Eriksdotter on Vikings: Valhalla. Freydis is a character from The Vínland Sagas, which were probably based on oral histories of earlier historical events. According to these poems, she and her brother Leif left Iceland for Greenland, and then sailed further west to “Vínland,” which we now know as North America. Since news of Sir Sean Connery’s passing shook the world this weekend, many who knew the Scottish actor intimately or in passing are sharing their anecdotes. And few have been as colorful as that of screenwriter Brian Koppelman, who took to Twitter to recall the time he and collaborator David Levien had a raucous working relationship with Sean Connery on a nondescript film.
In Koppelman’s telling, the pair were hired to rewrite a script, which was then ordered to be rewritten again to Connery’s specifications after he boarded the project. Working with the star in their modest Manhattan office, the pair and star created a treatment everyone was happy with until an unnamed director got involved. Now many are speculating Brett Ratner is apparently the director Connery wrote off as a “a bucket of smoke.”
“One of the very best working relationships we ever [had],” Koppelman tweeted about Connery.

To a certain generation of moviegoers, Joel Schumacher, who passed away this week, will be forever remembered as the man that introduced the world to Bat-nipples.
But that assessment belies the legacy of a director who, for all his faults, wasn’t afraid to take risks and rarely regretted anything he brought to the big screen.
The Batman & Robin filmmaker even remained philosophical on the subject of those distractingly erect rubber appendages.
“Maybe I was just naive but I’m still glad we did it,” he later reflected.
Indeed, Schumacher once declared: “I’m not embarrassed about anything I’ve done.”
And, Arnold Schwarzenegger ice puns aside, he had no reason to be.
A costume designer turned director, Schumacher’s flair for visuals and keen eye for casting set him on a course for a string of major hits.

Showtime is taking on the story of Uber, putting in development an untitled limited series based on Mike Isaac’s bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber, from Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
The book, published by W.W. & Company, Inc. on September 3, chronicles the founding of Uber through its 2019 initial public offering.
Pivoting on Travis Kalanick, Uber’s hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, Showtime says the limited series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley. Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.
Koppelman and Levien will executive produce and write the series as part of their overall deal with Showtime, which will produce. Isaac will co-executive produce the project.

Brian Koppelman and David Levien are developing a limited series about ridesharing company Uber for Showtime.

Classic rock has played a prominent role in Showtime’s “Billions,” not just in songs synched on the show — tracks by Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, Sly & the Family Stone, AC/DC and Van Halen can be heard — but in the T-shirts worn by lead character Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) bearing the logos of Metallica, Black Sabbath, Motorhead and other hard rock bands.
The heavy-hitting placements continue this season, the series’ fourth, with songs by U2 (“New Year’s Day”) and Jackson Browne (“These Days”), both used on the most recent May 26 episode. But creators/writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien are quick to point out that the show’s music finds a balance between the familiar and the lesser-known, with such acts as Lucy Darcus, Fred Eaglesmith and Kevin Morby also soundtracking this season.

The catch is that they'll all be gone by month's end. Not cool! Oh well, it's better than nothing. The Descent will also be arriving at the beginning of the month for a much longer stay.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

From Green Lantern 2 and Terminator: Salvation 2, to a Cat In The Hat sequel and Batman Triumphant: sequels killed by the earlier film...
Earlier this year, it was revealed that a sequel was in the early stages for the new Pierce Brosnan action thriller, The November Man. Remember it? Probably not: The November Man would go on to flop in the Us, grossing just $25m in the Us, and when it finally made it to British cinemas, it was released on just one screen (presumably to fill a contractual obligation somewhere along the line).
There's been no word yet on the fate of The November Man 2, but the outlook does not seem favourable. It wouldn't be the first time though that a sequel had been loudly mooted before even a first film was released, only to be quietly abandoned when something - usually related to box office takings - didn't go to plan.

Earlier this month, the Olympus Has Fallen sequel lost its director, Fredrik Bond, with just weeks before the film started shooting. Thankfully though Millennium and Gerard Butler have found a replacement in Scandinavian director Babak Najafi. He directed the Snabba cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, but London Has Fallen will be his English-language debut.
As soon as Bond left London, the studio and Butler started looking for a new director to take over. But the actor wasn't liking the directing prospects so much so that he considered leaving the project entirely. Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) and Gary Fleder (Homefront, Runaway Jury) were considered, but Najafi led the race.
Written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt, and Christian Gudegast. The Olympus sequel picks up in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world.

Scandinavian helmer Babak Najafi ("Easy Money II: Hard to Kill") is in talks to replace Fredrik Bond at the helm of "London Has Fallen," the upcoming sequel to "Olympus Has Fallen" from Millennium Entertainment.
With only a few weeks to go before shooting, Bond left the production and so both Millennium and leading man Gerard Butler scrambled to find a replacement.
Several names emerged as contenders this past week including Wayne Blair ("The Sapphires") and Gary Fleder ("Runaway Jury"), but Najafi pulled ahead during dealmaking.
If Najafi is set, he'll shoot four weeks of the project with cast members Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo in London shortly. Then the production goes on hold for a few months and picks up again from February to April, this time with Butler also in tow.

Cliff Curtis won’t talk about his new movie. He’ll write notes about it. Type on his laptop. Make elaborate, affirmative gestures in response to a question. But talking? No. Not right now. The New Zealand native, who gives a career-making performance in Kiwi director James Napier Robertson’s “The Dark Horse” (now playing the Toronto International Film Festival), is serious about his craft. So serious, in fact, that for the role of Robertson’s real-life Genesis Potini – chess savant, teacher and bi-polar Maori – he put on 30 kg, or about 66 pounds. How? “Beer. Carbs. Carbs. Carbs,” Curtis wrote. Why the silence? Because Curtis, who played the bad guy in an earlier Maori-themed hit (“Once Were Warriors”) and has appeared in such disparate features as “Runaway Jury,” “The Fountain” and “Live Free or Die Hard,” is currently shooting Kevin Reynold’s new film “Clavius,” which takes place in the days following Christ’s crucifixion.

Showtime has issued its first drama pilot pick up of the year. "Billions" is the result of a collaboration between writing veterans Brian Koppelman and David Levien -- the duo behind "Runaway Jury," "The Girlfriend Experience" and "Ocean's Thirteen," -- and New York Times Financial Columnist and CNBC "Squak Box" co-anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin. According to Showtime's announcement, "'Billions' is a fictional drama that focuses on the collision and, at times, collusion between an aggressive U.S. attorney in New York and some of the richest hedge fund billionaires in the country." Given the financial bent of this legal drama -- which is unusual on television as most legal dramas, serialized and procedural, typically focus on violent crime -- Showtime may have a genre-bending gamechanger in its hand. Koppelman, Levien and Sorkin are certainly in a unique position to reimagine the genre.

Having meted out justice for his country in the last three James Bond outings, Daniel Craig is now set to do the same in an entirely different setting in the courtroom drama, The Whole Truth.
Word surfaced earlier this month via the Daily Mail that Craig was in negotiations to lead the project, with Variety announcing that he’s now attached to star in the upcoming film.
Interestingly, the original report specifically describes the film as a courtroom drama, whilst the more recent describes it as a thriller. Of course, a film like Runaway Jury shows that the thriller element can be introduced very successfully into the courtroom drama, and given Craig’s undeniable talents in the thriller genre, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we get a little of both.
Details of the plot are currently being kept under wraps, but we do know that Craig is...

The CW announced its mid-season schedule today, including the premiere of new dramas "The 100" and "Star-Crossed" and a move for "The Tomorrow People" to Mondays.
The new series have a sci-fi tinge, but "The 100" especially, with its post-apocalyptic setting and the presence of Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “Scandal”), has our attention. And while "Star-Crossed" definitely seems to appeal to the more romantic types among us, it has a lot of familiar faces and could be worth watching for one or two episodes at least.

We love The CW here at SciFi Mafia. Other than Syfy, Chiller, and Fear, who have a directed advantage, The CW shows far more of Our Kind of Shows than any other network. Currently on the roster they have Supernatural, Arrow, The Tomorrow People, Beauty and the Beast, and Nikita, which is sadly currently in its final, excellent, season.
Happily they’re replacing that with not one but two more of Our Kind of Shows – and with luck, Flash will also be on its way to us, though that wouldn’t be until fall. Today they’ve announced premiere dates for the two new shows, and a schedule shift for two current shows:

Sly Stallone's screenplay gets Jason Statham back to normal as a retired DEA agent troubled by methheads who gets to wipe the smirk off James Franco's face
The success of The Expendables has apparently encouraged Sylvester Stallone to resume the (underrated) screenwriting career he launched with Rocky. Here, Sly's fashioned a role for Jason Statham that he might once have taken himself: that of Phil Broker, a retired DEA agent whose quiet life in rural Louisiana comes under threat from expansionist methheads. If it's initially distracting that these tweakers are played by slumming Ivy Leaguers (James Franco, Kate Bosworth), director Gary Fleder – a dab hand with knotty, workable pulp (Kiss the Girls, Runaway Jury) – proves admirably patient in revealing character and place, and it helps that those laying siege to our hero's self-timbered abode never quite react in the way expected of goons in a Jason Statham movie. After arriving in Us cinemas over the weekend, the Jason Statham-led action-thriller Homefront will be touching down on our shores this Friday, returning Statham to our screens for an impressive fourth* time this year.
With the film heading into our cinemas in just a few days’ time, Lionsgate have treated us to exclusively share this new clip with you. And when you take Kate Bosworth’s language into consideration, you can see why it’s not quite suitable for work.
Homefront stars Jason Statham as former drug enforcement agent, Phil Broker, a family man who moves off the grid with his daughter, to a seemingly quiet bayou backwater to escape his troubled past. However, Broker’s world soon becomes anything but quiet once he discovers that an underbelly of drugs and violence riddles the small town. Soon, a sociopathic methamphetamine kingpin, Gator Bodine (James Franco) puts Broker and his...

Jason Statham teams up with another badass little girl… which makes him almost warm and charming as he kicks the crap out of villains. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): have not been the biggest Jason Statham fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Hey! Jason Statham finally found a thing that works! Well, okay, a thing that finally works for me. Lots of folks seem just fine with the badass martial-arts machine he typically portrays… if that’s even the word for simply transferring his stuntman workouts to the big screen. For me, that’s so completely uninteresting, and so very cold, and I was starting to wonder if he had anything else to offer.
But he’s trying. With a decent script — not that this wholly qualifies, but more on that in a moment — he’s got something. With the right costar,...
