- A teenage girl learns that she is the reincarnation of Queen Guinevere of Camelot to be trained by Merlin to be a mystic defender of the innocent.
- Imagine a world lousy with betrayal and intrigue, where survival depends on allegiance to tribe-where happiness is an unexpected luxury and the future is clouded by chaos and barbarism. Sound like the Dark Ages of Arthurian legend? Try a typical high school, at the dawning of the twenty-first century. It's a world where, at fourteen, Gwen Jones doesn't fit in-doesn't want to fit in. Years of living on the run have taught Gwen to trust only her mother. But now her mother's ill, and Gwen's world has been turned upside down. She's living with strangers in a strange country, a strange town, going to a strange school. Gwen doesn't know it yet, but things are about to get a lot stranger.
- Gwen Jones is a high school student. She has fled to Melbourne, Australia with Karen, her Australian-born mother, to escape shadowy danger in Canada, Gwen's birthplace. At fourteen, Gwen is going through huge changes. For most of her life she has been on the run, moving from town to town with her mother, always in hiding - but from what, Karen would never say. When they left Canada for Australia, Gwen's mother becomes withdrawn, refuses to eat, and eventually is placed in hospital. Gwen winds up in foster care. Gwen is a devoted daughter and a devout believer in justice but she has the hot blood of Guinevere running through her veins, which gives her a wildness and unpredictability. She resents and resists the idea that she is re-living somebody else's life. Like any teenager, she thinks of herself as an original.—Danielle Spencers
