Hanging and Climbing
This game is another under the radar gem, it's the sequel to an 80's classic that has become forgotten as time climbed on. It's true this game is almost more by its nature an updated remake of the first game but that's not a bad thing if it adds or improves a little on its predecessor. It's such a simple if daft premise, the game is pretty much like "The Wall" challenge from the TV show "American Gladiators", in this game you just a guy that is climbing up from point A to B without falling and dying, that's it in a nutshell.
I like the graphical presentation as it looks a little more polished and up to date as the character and the background look more lively and not so basic as in the original. Here the animation is having sort of that Japanese anime vibe which fits the crazy atmosphere of the game. Music is decent, nothing to run home about but fits the game ok.
The gameplay is solid, one of the things that make it unique is really in its two joystick control schemes. It's true at first, it's a little puzzling and strange at first but you get used to it as it actually begins to feel natural and makes sense for climbing physics. You can pull up, put your hands one at a time to ascend one window at a time. Or even spread your hands to two windows which helps in case you need to climb left and right.
One of the unique things about the game are, it has a little more humor than the first, from that little brief cinematics that pop up whenever you encounter any of the hot girls that just happen to sit out of their apartment window and once you climb to them, both of you have a long snog and collect points.
There are also the obstacles, you have the usual closed or closing windows you want to avoid. But then there are disgruntled tenants that are dropping their junk down on you, why the heck their all mad at you and want to kill you is anyone's guess. Or are mere polluter that are just too lazy to take out the trash (really is it hard to walk to a trash shoot or even ride an elevator down). Also, there are some lively billboards which we use to have during the 80's, laundry lines, and a lot of other random craziness, which fits the crazy nature of this game. Of course, there is that dreaded King Kong like gorilla that is throwing some darn bricks or cinder blocks at you. Your character can take some hits but not too many as they'll cause you to fall once hit with too many, so you need to always avoid them.
I even like that each of the levels are different, there is also different features about them which help in keeping the game fresh, like in one level you must use poles to ascend a section and some other things I don't want to give away, you must see them for yourself.
Overall, I feel the same as I do about the first game, though I like this sequel a little more because of those improvements and additions but that's just me, but all the same you can't go wrong with either game. This along with its predecessor are arcade classics worth a climb.
Rating: 3 stars.
