Madeline's play to use Amabella's birthday in a vindictive fashion didn't quite turn out as planned.
It seemed the only person who suffered on Big Little Lies Season 1 Episode 3 was Chloe. She was missing out on a party that was going to be a rollicking good time for a ride in a limo with champagne and Carole King.
This was the first hour of the series in which Madeline was more of a prop introducing the stories of other characters, and it worked very well.
Renata was very close to allowing her anxieties over the party and because of her rivalry with Madeline get the best of her.
It's hard to see your daughter worried over her big day, and the first grade is a time when attendance at a birthday party matters. When parents get involved, it's all kinds of ugly.
The real kicker was Renata gave in to the pressure.

Jeremy Irons is in many respects the quintessential English film actor. That’s not simply because of the honeyed diction and innate elegance, but the versatility that has enabled him to travel with ease between romantic leading man, edgy character actor and sinister villain, towards an Indian summer of ever-dependable supporting player.

Think James Mason. In fact, Irons and Mason even have a role in common – the riskiest of roles, Nabokov’s infamous pedophile Humbert Humbert, Mason most famously in Kubrick’s “Lolita” of 1962, Irons for Adrian Lyne in 1997. It’s difficult to imagine many Americans jumping at a character who came second in Time’s “Top 10 Worst Fictional Fathers,” or possessing the nuance necessary to make us almost like the man.
Again like many Brits, Irons is classically trained (at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School,...

Actor Jeremy Irons appears in Lone Scherfig’s latest film “Their Finest,” which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. But while the film is screening in Toronto, Irons himself is in London because he was the latest subject of BAFTA’s “A Life In Pictures” series, a conversational interview that looks back at an actor’s professional career. Last Friday, Irons sat down with critic and broadcaster Danny Leigh in front of an attendant audience to discuss his life on stage and on film. Below are some choice excerpts from the evening, in which he discusses working with Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro, his work on David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers,” and seeing himself in “The Lion King.”

Gavin DeGraw gets romantic in the music video for his newest single, “She Sets The City On Fire,” which is off his upcoming record, Something Worth Saving. The album will be DeGraw’s sixth overall and is set for release on September 9th through RCA Records.
Daniel Cz took directing duties for the video clip, which shows the growth of the relationship between DeGraw and his love interest, played by supermodel Jessica Vargas, over the years. Cz has directed notable videos in the past, including G-Eazy’s “Drifting” and Benny Benassi’s “Paradise.”
Something Worth Saving is shaping up to be yet another quality release from DeGraw considering we’ve already been introduced to another song from the record, “Making Love With The Radio On.” DeGraw will be promoting the album during a number of future television appearances, such as Good Morning America on September 5th and The Late Late Show With James Corden...

Arthur Hiller with his Jean Hersholt Huminatarian AwardOscar nominated Canadian born Hollywood director Arthur Hiller died yesterday at 92 years of age. Though he's best remembered for the 1970 mega-hit Love Story -- so popular in its day it would have been equivalent to a Jurassic World at the box office today (no really) -- his career was actually quite varied. He did dramas, romances, buddy comedies, period pieces, you name it.
Among his best known films which is your favorite?
The Americanization of Emily (1964) The Out of Towners (1970) Love Story (1970) Plaza Suite (1971) Man of La Mancha (1972) Silver Streak (1976) The In-Laws (1979) Making Love (1982) Author! Author! (1982) Outrageous Fortune (1987) See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989)
Outrageous Fortune was probably my favorite of his films - Bette Midler & Shelley Long were so funny together -- but the film that's the most interesting, historically, is Making Love as it was the very first mainstream Lgbt film.

Oh Russell Wilson, you lucky, lucky man. Let's be real—it's no secret that Ciara is freakin' sexy. We all knew it the moment she stepped on the scene. Between her killer bod, mesmerizing smile and insane dance moves, she was undeniable. But we don't mind a little reminder here and there, do we? The gorgeous singer proved once again that she's top of the line with her music video for her Jackie single "Dance Like We're Making Love," and as you can probably guess from the title alone, it was hot. Ciara delivers a nice mix of sultry sex appeal by flaunting her best assets in revealing outfits that accentuate her enviable figure, while also performing some impressive...

Meet Love Island's latest arrivals - as selected and approved by fellow islanders - Cally Jane Beech and Travis Almond.
Cally is a 23-year-old former Miss Great Britain champion hailing from Hull, whose current profession is as a dental nurse. She was previously romantically linked to Towie's Mario Falcone.
Essex-born Travis, 22, is a butler-in-the-buff, bouncer and personal trainer.
Speaking to Digital Spy, the excited and nervous newbies tell us who they fancy and who they suspect has the biggest gameplan.
Here's the skinny:
Who have you got your eye on in the villa?
Cally: Luis [Morrison] 100%.
Travis: I like Jess and I like Lauren. Jess has got a couple of sides to her I quite like, she's quite naughty. I think she's got a sensitive side as well which I'd like to bring out in her.
What are your feelings about your fellow islanders?
Travis: Josh [Ritchie], I'm not too keen on.

It made its world premiere at the 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, last year, and, unfortunately, S&A wasn't present at the festival, so none of us saw the film, and still haven't, despite requests. C'est la vie... It eventually did open in France last November, but there's no indication at all that it's been released anywhere else in the world - certainly not here in the USA, which is too bad. Again, requests for information haven't been answered. "Faire L’Amour," (or "Making Love") is Haitian director Djinn Carrénard's sophomore effort - a film that opened the 2014 Canne International Critics' Week sidebar - the oldest...

Far less erratic than the quality of his recent films is Woody Allen's preoccupation with sex, one that seems to have seeped into his family life, as suggested in a recent, harrowing Vanity Fair article. Though much of the heat is suggestively felt in his latest, "Blue Jasmine," you don't have to look far to find an Allen film that tosses the phrase "make love" around like it's nobody's business. The folks over at Official Comedy have fashioned a supercut of Allen, his stand-ins, and objects of affection uttering any variation on "make love" throughout his oeuvre. From "What's New Pussycat" (1965) to "To Rome With Love" (2012), there's plenty of sex talk to be had. Watch "Woody Allen Making Love: A Supercut," below. ...
