KollywoodTrisha has completed 15 years in films.Digital Native trisha_DN 750x500.jpgThe journey of Trisha Krishnan as an actor is quite interesting, considering she swore never to enter cinema soon after winning the Miss Chennai beauty pageant. Earlier this week, she reached a new milestone and it marked the successful completion of 15 years of her career in front of the camera. On the occasion, she took to Twitter to say: “If there’s one thing I did right, it was choosing to stand for against all odds, go with purely my gut, give it my 100% while it gave me back double, this is it. And I wouldn’t trade a day for anything else. Thank you all for being part of my most beautiful journey.” Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, she said that she’d like to thank all those filmmakers who made great films with her: "I am so grateful and overwhelmed with the love pouring in. And a big thanks to my fans that have stood by me through it all. I would also like to thank my directors, who have written scripts for me and given me such wonderful films.” Having starred alongside all the top stars such as Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith, Vikram and Suriya in his illustrious career, Trisha has been part of memorable and hit films. She has also had her share of bad films and flops; however, she continued to hold her ground despite facing setbacks. On the career front, Trisha has about half a dozen projects in her kitty. She currently has Garjanai, the Tamil remake of NH10 in the pipeline, apart from projects such as Sathuranga Vettai 2, 96, Mohini and 1818. This year also marks her Malayalam debut with Nivin Pauly in Hey Jude. Trisha is very much in the big league but her choice of films has changed and that’s a good sign. Unlike the current crop, she is no longer after star heroes and is keen to take on women-centric projects. One of her dreams is to play late Tn Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in her biopic. In a recent chat with her fans on Twitter, she reiterated that she is still open to the idea of starring in a biopic on the veteran politician. It’s interesting to note that both of them are from the same school Church Park. In her Twitter chat, when asked to pick from three women - Kalpana Chawla, Jayalalithaa, and Marilyn Monroe – on whose biopic she will work on, she said Jayalalithaa. Last year, in an interview to News 18, Trisha said she would love work in the biopic of Jayalalithaa because: “I think she is all woman power and that's the biopic I would like to do. She has got a very interesting career graph as well a very intriguing political graph.” Unfortunately, no filmmaker so far has expressed interest in doing a biopic on Jayalalithaa so far. As was predicted in this column last week, it was Alone that led the show at the box office. The horrex affair had a target audience in mind and in that aspect, the Bhushan Patel film pretty much scored in the territories and the centers where it was expected to do well. As a result, the film collected well at single screens, especially in the interiors. Though multiplexes stayed low during the weekend, the film held on well on the power of gentry audience, as a result of which around 14 crore came in.
These are better collections than Bipasha Basu’s last couple of supernatural films – Creature and Aatma. In fact for a woman-centric film, Bipasha has managed to showcase yet again that she is creating her own charter. The film has basically a week to score well since Baby and Dolly Ki Doli arrive next (with chances of Messenger...

It was going to be Dhanush versus Dhanush at the Tamil Nadu box office this Friday. Ambikapathy, the Tamil version Raanjhanaa was to compete with Dhanush's brand new original Tamil film Maryan, a thriller directed by Bharat Bala which stars Dhanush as a man on a journey of self-discovery. This was the first time that there would have been three Dhanush releases in two weeks, with two of his Tamil films vying for eyeballs during the same Friday. And Dhanush who is a very meticulous career planner, was not pleased. According to sources every effort was made to avert this clash. "If you look at the history of the Tamil Nadu box office, no Tamil superstar from M G Ramachandran to Sivaji Ganesan to Kamal Haasan to Rajinikanth to Suriya to Vikram to Dhanush has ever released two of their own films during the same Friday or even close to one another.

The South's gonna rise again! This time, it's the south of India, whose over the top masala action style is all the rage in Bollywood these days. The latest product of this trend is Policegiri, a film starring '80s-'90s superstar romantic lead Sanjay Dutt as a roughneck cop taking matters into his own hands, sort of like a Dirty Hari. Not surprisingly, the film is a remake of a Tamil film titled Saamy that starred Vikram and was a huge hit at the box office. The remake is directed by big shot Tamil filmmaker Ks Ravikumar, who is responsible for one huge hit after another, including Kamal Hassan's bizarre vanity project Dasavataram from back in 2008. More recently, Ravikumar is currently involved in co-directing the massive...

It's only been a couple of years since Ronnie Screwvala took his multimedia conglomerate, Utv Motion Pictures, into the south of India. Utv is the biggest studio in India, and in 2011, the controlling stake in the company's stock was purchased by The Walt Disney Corporation. This transition has really seemed to up the speed at which Utv seeks to take over all of Indian cinema, not just the Hindi film industry, on which they've had a very firm grip for the better part of a decade. In the service of that goal, they've released several big budget features with big South Indian stars including Arya (Naan Kadavul) in Vettai, Kamal Hassan in Unnaipol Oruvan, and Vikram in last year's breakout hit, Deiva Thirumagal. The...

The influence of South Indian cinema on Hindi over the years had gradually increased to a whole new level today. In the 90s you simply got accustomed to faces like Nagarjuna and Rajnikanth whose films without fail got dubbed in Hindi. However, come the millennium and the selling of your remake rights and the subsequent acquiring of it by a maker in Hindi cinema has become one of the most prominent business transactions in Indian cinema. We are no longer satisfied with dubbed versions of their films nor are many of the Si makers looking to release such versions of their films.
The idea of remakes allows for the story to be adapted into a new setting to be marketed to a new audience after being customised for their needs. Why risk an original script that may not work when you’ve got a blockbuster script at your disposal that...

'Luck By Chance' (2009)
Starring Farhan Aktar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Dimple Kapadia, Isha Sharvani, Hrithik Roshan, Rishi Kapoor, Juhi Chawla
Everything clicks in Zoya Akhtar's smart directorial debut—setting a standard in a film industry it comes close to lampooning. The ridicule is good-natured, though, even accepting of the way things work in Bollywood, and while the characters represent showbiz clichés, they are subtly rendered—for the most part. And the ones that aren't are ridiculously fun.
Talent runs in Akhtar's family—she's the daughter and granddaughter of poets and screenwriters. She's also the twin sister of filmmaker Farhan Aktar, who had an equally impressive directorial debut with the acclaimed 'Dil Chahta Hai' (2001), which he helmed at the tender age of 27. She cast her brother as the lead in 'Luck By Chance' (on the heels of his promising acting debut in 2008 in the award-winning 'Rock On!

As far as debutants go, 2009 was one of the worst years in recent years. No Ranbir. Or Deepika. Not even a Neil or a Mugdha. There were just a handful of wannabes like Vashu Bhagnani's son Jackky and Sadhana Singh's daughter Sheena. None of the newcomers added up to much. Hopefully, the faces in 2010 would be more productive.<span style="font-weight: bold;">Sonakshi Sinha</span><br style="font-weight: bold;" />Film: Abhinav Kashyap's DabanggBackground: Daughter to and pampered by Shatrughan and Punam Sinha, Sonakshi did somemodelling and had no intentions of being an actress until Salman Khan spotted her.Verdict: Sonakshi has what it takes, besides Salman's staunch support and her parents' guidance she is described as "stunningly pretty" by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.<span style="font-weight: bold;">Zarine Khan</span><br style="font-weight: bold;" />Film: Anil Sharma's VeerBackground: Came in from the cold, no family connections, just Salman Khan's recommendationVerdict: She has Salman to back up her starry dreams. What ascribes an actor to be successful? Is it merely with his performance or film’s success? Most of the times, it goes along with the latter category where a performer’s hard work and intensity levels are completely diminished with the film’s failure.
Here we bring some of the best actors of Tamil Cinema 2009.
Surya: Being one of the prominent actors on the main league, he has accomplished with couple of projects within short span of time. ‘Ayan’ and ‘Aadhavan’ have been two films like dissimilar poles and he did his best. But regrettably, he lost his reputation for his command of bad languages on journalists.
Vikram: He suited the role of a superhero, a Cbi officer and excelled well as a great singer. If ‘Kanthaswamy’ was a flop, Susi Ganesh has to be blamed. But an intellectual actor is supposed to make right decisions while choosing the script.
