Mistinguett in 1916
happytrigger-64-3905179 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
From the same DVD box in which I saw "Chignon d'Or", here is "Fleur de Paris" with Mistinguett in a double character, the rich and the poor. The picture is much less darker than in "Chignon d'Or" which was shot in wide shots. In "Fleur de Paris", the shots are closer to the characters, so we can appreciate Mistinguett's constant smiling. Enjoy.

Nice comedy with French Variete Star Mistinguette
roehrseuteneuer14 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This silent comedy shows the tribulations of a seamstress, Margot (Played by Variete-Star Mistinguette) who is fascinated by the posters for the Show of - Mistinguette! She poses with her friend in front of the Theatre and decides, to join the show for 3 francs - she has get her weekly pay of 10 francs. While enjoying the show she has forgotten her parents who wait for her. As the father is without work and there is another child to feed - a 10 year old boy - Margot's pay is needed to pay for the baker. Full of shame Margot runs away and makes a living by selling flowers. Meanwhile, Mistinguette, courted by a rich American backer, leaves her friend Harry Podge. Dismayed, Podge wanders around the Champs Elysees, where he meets Margot selling flowers and fainting of hunger in his arms. He marries her and the family is rescued. Well, the storyline is obviously only a front for presenting the star in a double role, and Mistinguette acts lively and comic in both roles. She is much older than the role (about 45), like her mother who seems about 60 and has a 10 year old boy! But the stage and film conventions of that time might not be scrutinized by current standards. It's fine to see the Parisian people in war time look at the camera and hailing the star. The action unfolds mostly in front of the camera like in the theater, but the scenes in the streets are lively and the playing of the actors is enjoyable.
