Creative story with exceptional performances
Musicianmagic19 January 2024
The story centers around the filming of a pink eiga film but also centering on the cast and crew that is both poignant and at times funny. It seems to occur during the Obon festival which is part of the story. The title "Location" refers to location filming.

Features a number of various public locations just like used in a real pink eiga film including Spa Resort Hawaiians then called the Joban Hawaiian Center and their famous hula girls even appear briefly .

If you don't know what a pink eiga film is. This isn't one (it's about making one) at 1 hour 39 minutes and with only a couple of scenes with nudity. A pink eiga is about one hour give or take a few minutes and includes at least four scenes containing nudity or sex, shot on a miniscule budget over just a few days but beyond that the director is usually given creative freedom which has resulted in some outstanding films in the genre. Audio is recorded later (ADR) which is why the director and crew in the movie they're making can shout during filming and you don't see microphones. A lot of what happens in this movie is representative of making an actual pink eiga.

The first half is rather lighthearted with some dramatic moments, while the second half is more serious with few laughs. I think that added to the strength of the film. I got more engaged as the story developed and got more serious.

The cast is excellent. Jun Miho as Emiko the female lead gives an exceptional performance and elevates the movie. A sign of her ability that has been shown numerous times since this movie was made. She also did make some pink eiga films in the early 1980's.

It probably helps if you enjoy pink eiga as I do as it's part of the story. Still this movie stands on its own. Highly recommend watching.
