Typical social criticism of the 1980's China
zzmale8 April 2004
The actual title of the movie is: Si Qu Huo Lai instead of Shi Qu Huo Lai, and the literal translation is: Death is gone and Life is back, but a more proper translation would be: Over and over again.

Audience needs to know a little bit about the traditional Chinese culture in order to understand the title of this movie: when the term "over and over again" is expressed in the form of "Death is gone and life is back", it usually has a negative connotation, and this is exactly what this typical piece of work of social criticism in the 1980's China meant, by describing the drama of interpersonal relationships, it criticized the injustice (both the current and those from the past, such as the Cultural Revolution) in the society.
