A Creepy Picture About Pictures
There's something off about the Buster Brown comedies starring Arthur Trimble. The outfit, which might have been a bit sissified when Outcault started the strip a quarter of a century earlier, looks like something a chorus girl might wear in a leg show, and there's something androgynous about Trimble. Given that the director, Gus Meins, later committed suicide while on trial for child molestation and Trimble killed his wife and himself when he was 39... well, looking at the performance, I can believe it.
Fortunately, there's the real star of the show, Pete the Pup, a brilliantly trained dog with real charm. He would shortly accept a better offer from Hal Roach and join Our Gang.
In this one, Trimble, Pete and Mary Jane take in a movie and then decide to go out west by riding the rails. When they get off, they run into a movie company shooting a western.
It's competently done, but I still don't like Trimble.
