The enigmatic greys of a Kashmir winter in ‘Haider’, the many tones of black in ‘Maqbool’ with such visual poetry where each note stands out, Vishal Bhardwaj’s cinema has never shouted ‘independent’ but subtly stood out from the movies of his time.

“What you call visual poetry in my films emerges from the deep-rooted love for poetry that never leaves me,” Bhardwaj told Ians. “Therefore, there is always an effort to lend a certain rhythm and deeper meaning to everything that happens in front of the camera.”
Together with Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Tigmanshu Dhulia, Bhardwaj has been instrumental in ushering in a new era in Indian cinema after the almost traumatic 80s when Hindi cinema hit its lowest. He believes, though, that the independent...

A good storyteller plays with the audience’s mind by using their actual fears – the shadows on the wall, the corners of the room that scare at night, that old lift in the building. Kannan Iyer takes the age old lore of witches and witchcraft and sets it right into our daily modern lives giving us one of the few chilling and superbly shot horror films.
Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) appears to have everything going for him – he is a famous magician, has a sweet girlfriend Tamra (Huma Qureshi) and an about-to-adopt son. Except that he seems to be hearing a voice which no one else can making him impossible to concentrate on anything anymore. He knows that it’s linked to his past; the murder of his kid sister which he can’t remember about. And when he starts recalling under hypnosis about what really happened those many years ago,...

Finally, there will now be a Vishal Bhardwaj film, barring his debut film Makdee , which will be U/A. Vishal’s film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has received a U/A certificate from the Censor Board.
Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola was recently in trouble with the Censor board due to the word ‘pancho’ that is frequently used by Pankaj Kapur in the film, and the Board felt it was an inappropriate word. However, the final decision on the film was a U/A rating.
Vishal is very happy with the rating and said, “I have always wanted to reach out to a bigger audience and now with a U/A rating I can do the same. I am thankful to the Censor Board. This is a very happy and crazy film so I am sure people will enjoy it.”

Vishal Bhardwaj's Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (Mkbkm) received 'U/A' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc). Interestingly, almost all of his movies got 'A' certificate (except for his directorial debut Makdee, which was essentially a children's film). The film had initially run into censor trouble with Pankaj Kapur's character saying 'Pancho', which, the Cbfc felt, sounded like a Hindi expletive. However, much to the director's delight, the 'U/A' ratin...

Children’s films in India don’t seem to believe much in experimenting; they work within a prescribed format with certain compulsory elements like an orphaned child who is made to work hard by a cruel uncle, the child’s quest for education and a moral at the end of the story. Films like Vishal Bhardwaj’s Makdee, Santosh Sivan’s Halo and Ajay Kartik’s Karamati Coat, two of which were produced by the Cfsi, evoke nostalgia about a bygone era when children’s films explored the realm of fantasy and took one on an adventurous and emotional ride with the protagonist. The stories of an old witch who turned humans into animals, a miraculous street dog and a magical coat were so much more charming in contrast to the ‘real’ stories of today.
Nevertheless children’s films deserve some concession; after all there are so few of them...

Recently Priyanka Chopra stated that her character of Sweety in Kaminey is so well written that it would surely make an impact. Well, considering the fact that director Vishal Bhardwaj has been known for presenting his female leads in a distinct avatar, one tends to agree with Priyanka. After all he is the same man who succeeded in giving a new image to his female actors like Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Shabana Azmi after working with them in Maqbool, Omkara and Makdee respectively. Hence, there is no reason why it should be any different in the film maker's fourth outing Kaminey. ''I do hope that I have been able to do justice to Vishal's vision for this wonderful character that he has crea...
