Amusing idea
liudragon28 July 2004
This movie has a great premise: a girl cursed by a gypsy turns into a lesbian instead of a werewolf. But the execution is too amateurish to make it into a cult classic. The acting is erratic too with Lilith and Debbie very darned good and the rest of the cast not quite so good. The Zucker Bros. approach of trying to make a joke out of every line only works when the jokes are good and most of the ones in Weregrrl are not good at all. They should have sold the script to a producer and director who could do it properly. It looks like they got an idea and went out a called their friends, bought a camera and shot the movie that afternoon. It needed more thought. It has some entertaining moments and it is not exploitive at all. Good marks for that. A solid attempt is Weregrrl. I would like to see more from this camp.

Minor, non offensive poking around with stereotypes

Warning: Spoilers
Leslie (Jasi Lanier) is a paralegal and former stripper who moves into a new apartment building and is promptly courted by the nerdy Jerry ("Francis Veltri"). He takes her on a date to a carnival where a gypsy woman (Amy Lynn Best) predicts that she'll soon be living a split life. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as she exits the tent, she's grabbed and kissed by a huge butch lesbian and the 'curse' is unleashed. This results in Leslie becoming a girl-hungry lesbian whenever the moon is full. Her hair and nails grow shorter, she wakes up wearing a flannel shirt, rolled jeans and boots and starts entering a gay club where she picks up ladies for one-night stands. A consultation with the gypsy reveals that all it takes to reverse the curse are repeat bubble baths, overkill Julia Roberts movies and marriage, but is Leslie really ready to give up her new lifestyle? After seeing what her future might hold and being immediately deserted by Jerry when she even mentions tying the knot, she begins to have second thoughts. Debbie Rochon has a fun supporting role as a bartender at the gay bar (and has flashbacks of her own) and Countess Lilith Stabs plays herself in linking segments at the beginning and end... And that's basically all she wrote.

This horror-comedy short, pretty much a reverse gender spin on CURSE OF THE QUEERWOLF (1988), was shot on video and is so no-budget that the 'carnival' takes place in an open field. The acting is bland at times and the writing and direction, even compared to other films from this budget range, is uneven. That said, there are a few gags that actually do work and it's amusing at times; just not as frequently as it should be for a film with such a short run time (28 minutes).

This movie was great!

I loved this movie! I picked up a copy of it at a convention. Where I also got to meet Amy Lynn Best and Mike Watt, and Jasi and Lilith Stabs. They're all very nice people. Anyways, Jasi gave a very comical performance as weregrrl. I thought the film was well done. It didn't exploit women in this one like in most soft core lesbian films. And the acting was great and I loved how Lilith played herself. And also the special features were very entertaining. I give it a 10!!

Put down the camera and pick up your crayons

Warning: Spoilers
What in the world was anybody thinking when they put a camera into the hands of these vidiots? How can you take a great premise like a curse that doesn't turn each subsequent victim into a werewolf but into a lesbian and make a rotten home video? Michael Watt (aka Francis Veltri) gives a bad name to amateur acting with his smirky and childish jokes and less than cartoonish pratfalls. Just because you can aim a camera doesn't make you a director either. The story by Watt and the direction of Best are totally not compelling. I like seeing Debbie Rochon but methinks this was a "paycheck" performance by the scream queen and not something she did for her Art! This could even be the nadir of Lilith Stabs career, if that is at all possible. There is not one thing even remotely likable about this home video. They are all clapping themselves on their backs for not exploiting women in this thing. There's no nudity and nothing gratuitous. That may be commendable but there's nothing interesting or entertaining going on either. I bought this at a convention and I should have bought it on Saturday instead of Sunday because I couldn't go back the next day to return it. Please, PLEASE: To all the non-talented people with video cameras and no talent - please stop trying to pretend that you are filmmakers. And please, PLEASE, dear Lord, stop me from wasting a fiver on these things every time I go to a convention. I keep hoping something good will come out of one of these direct to video things and nothing, NOTHING, ever does.

Clever film with funny performance by Jasi Lanier
minimogul20 June 2003
Lots of funny bits in this twisted take on the werewolf legends. Jasi is at her best here, with a sly performance as the "victim". Director Amy Lynn Best also supplies some brief buy very effective bits by Debbie Rochon, who is also in good comedy form here.
