Sega's Seminal Cute 'Em Up

Fantasy Zone is one of Sega's early-ish arcade games before they reached new heights with the System-16 arcade board. You play as Opa-Opa, a red egg shaped spaceship that can be upgraded with bombs, shot (laser, double, wide beam etc) and a speed-boost. The game is a side-scroller and you can travel backwards and forwards similar to Defender.

The game suffers comparisons to Konami's vertical scroller Twinbee which is arguably much more fun to play and much fairer. This game is as hard as nails. The huge advantage it has is it looks gorgeous especially for a 1986 game. Graphically the game reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons (My Little Pony and Care Bears) with very soft pastel shades and a bright colour palette.

The game was ported to the Master System and it's a really good and accurate version of the Arcade game. So to summarise: this is a tough, unforgiving game, but the soundtrack and graphics make it worth playing especially if you like the art style.

Fantastic!!!

This is one of the best shoot 'em ups on the Sega Master System, with it's garish psychedelic graphics, awesome memorable bosses, and a great 'SHOP' power up system! The other great shooters on the SMS (R-Type, etc) were continuous scrolling, but in this you can backtrack and change direction, which, of course, adds to the game play. Also, the happy plinky plonky tunes in this game just enhance the freaky deaky world you are trying to save, and you might notice that on entering a shop, the music that plays is the same as in the shop on Super Hang On, on the Mega Drive. Or you might not. One things for sure, YOU ARE NOT A SHOOT 'EM UP FAN UNLESS YOU OWN THIS GAME! - I'm serious...!
