Ancient When I Were A Lad
boblipton26 May 2022
Art Gilmore tells a few phony-sounding facts about four songs from the 1890s and 1900s, and then a chorus sings them, with the lyrics printed for the audience to join in. The songs are "The Band Played On", "Daisy Bell" -- also known as "A Bicycle Built For Two", "Come Josephine In My Flying Machine", and "The Man On The Flying Trapeze."

Events like this were common in vaudeville and early movie shows: someone would come in, sing a song, often with the words projected via magic lantern, and then sell the sheet music. Later, you would occasionally see songs projected while the house musicians accompanied the audience. The Fleischers had a big hit with their Screen Songs beginning in 1924, and here Warner Brothers gets in on the act, with songs from their own catalogue.
