Magical Bellini
TheLittleSongbird28 November 2012
As far as Bellini's operas go, his masterpiece to me will always be Norma, though I Puritani and La Sonnambula are almost at that level. Beatrice Di Tenda plot-wise is not one of the best, but Bellini's ever hauntingly beautiful music with the hypnotic arpeggio melodies really shines through. Apart from some static staging for the chorus, this is an excellent production, and as the only production of the opera it is a more than worthy one. The costumes and sets are beautiful to look, and the picture and video quality do nothing to cheapen them. The lighting is atmospheric as well. Musically, the production cannot be faulted. The orchestral playing is both stylish and nuanced and the chorus sing with a lovely sound and good blending. The conducting shows great musicality and leadership, while the sound is excellent. The principal performances are every bit as impressive. Raul Hernandez and Stephanie Kaluzza sing their roles with security and with at least an understanding for Bellini's style. Michael Volle has a voice that is warm and flexible and he is truly evil dramatically. But the best asset is Edita Gruberova in the title role. Maybe some of her high notes are on the strained side, but the floating pianissimos and the colouratura/Bel-Canto technique continue to dazzle, and overall it is a performance that is both subtle and touching. All in all, magical with a great Gruberova especially. 9/10 Bethany Cox
