Last year’s strikes can take credit for some of this nostalgia: With distributors forced to delay films, theaters are desperate for product. However, desperation is not the only mother of this invention. A24, Neon, and other specialty distributors are treating re-releases as a way to reach younger audiences.
Last year, Neon re-released Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film “Oldboy” to $2.1 million worldwide. At a CinemaCon panel April 8, Neon distribution president Elissa Federoff credited its success to a young audience eager to see it on a big screen for the first time. “What is old is new for these younger audiences,” she said.

The Running Man (1987) was one of Stephen King's earliest books. In a dystopian version of America's future, an impoverished family man named Ben Richards struggles to deal with unemployment and his daughter's mounting medical bills. In desperation, Richards signs up to be on 'The Running Man', a reality show where contestants try to evade highly trained killers. For every hour that they survive, they earn money. If they manage to live for 30 days, they win 1 billion dollars.
Richards has no hope of winning – he's just your average guy, without the physical prowess it will take to outrun and outfight his pursuers. He knows that competing on the show will kill him, but he hopes to live long enough to earn the money it will take to save his family.
Some Major Changes
Five years after the publication of The Running Man, the book was adapted for the big screen.

Hey, Edgar, you’ve got red on you. Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright had quite a task ahead of him in making his breakout hit, but he probably didn’t bank on a horde of zombie extras going full Romero on him. But that’s just what happened during production of the classic zom-com, something he may have inadvertently prompted himself.
In a new oral history via IndieWire, Edgar Wright recalled that he had some additional sound work to get done to add to the zombification of the citizens of London, with one extra going a bit too far with his contributions. “We were taking a sound recording because we needed zombie noise, just audio only. I was sort of conducting them, and in one take, I said, “Ok, come in and attack me!” And of course, they all did and maybe because they felt so cooped up...

Glen Powell has been hired by Edgar Wright, to go where Arnold Schwarzenegger went before in a new take on The Running Man.
If you’ve been following the progress of Edgar Wright’s mooted adaptation of The Running Man, a healthy does of patience has been required but after three years of waiting, we finally have our first real bit of news regarding the project.
First announced back in 2021, development on The Running Man has likely been affected by the global pandemic and Hollywood strikes which have disrupted production and caused many a project to fall by the wayside.
Despite calling it a ‘dream project’, the Shaun Of The Dead director didn’t really offer much in the way of updates until late last year when he confirmed that The Running Man was still alive and in ‘active development.’

Glen Powell is lacing up his sneakers.
The “Top Gun: Maverick” star will lead the cast of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man,” taking on a role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 cult favorite. The dystopian action film is based on a novel of the same name by horror maestro Stephen King, which he first published under a pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
Wright, best known for directing the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” will also produce the picture along with Simon Kinberg and Nira Park. The filmmaker, whose work overflows with style and wit, most recently made the psychological horror film “Last Night in Soho.” His other credits include “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
Powell is on a hot streak lately and has found himself in demand by many studios who believe he has the kind of charisma that could make him a major star.

When "28 Days Later" was released in 2002, it heralded the revival of the post-apocalyptic zombie movie after years of the subgenre lying dormant. While the success of the film — directed by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland — kicked off a wave of zombie media that led to not only the return of the subgenre's progenitor, George A. Romero, but also shows like "The Walking Dead" and films like "Shaun of the Dead," "Zombieland" and so on. It didn't necessarily kick off a franchise for itself, however. Despite 2007's "28 Weeks Later" — directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo — being generally well-received, a follow-up failed to happen, despite years of rumors that Boyle was interested in returning to the world of the rage virus.
That's all changed now; not only was it previously announced that Boyle, Garland, and producer Andrew Macdonald would be returning for "28 Years Later," it seems that the...

It lasts roughly a minute and consists of only a handful of shots (and none of Edgar Wright’s trademark visual wizardry), yet the moment in Shaun Of The Dead when Simon Pegg’s hapless hero and his group of survivors round the corner and bump into another group is possibly the film’s most ambitious gag. Mainly because the other gang is played by a who’s who (then and now) of British comedy: Martin Freeman, Reece Shearsmith, Tamsin Greig, Spaced mainstay Julia Deakin, Matt Lucas and, at the vanguard, Pegg’s Spaced co-creator, Jessica Hynes. A finer cavalcade of cameos, you’ll never see.

Acclaimed developer Hideo Kojima has several highly anticipated projects in the works, including Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the mysterious Od. In a recent post on Twitter/X, fellow beloved game director, Sam Lake, of Remedy Entertainment posted a video of himself in the process of getting digitally scanned for inclusion in an upcoming video game for Kojima Productions.
Fans of both directors are now clamoring for more information on this exciting collaboration. Many fans have begun to speculate on what game this collaboration could relate to, with the consensus generally being that it is most likely for On the Beach.
Hideo Kojima and Sam Lake Have Collaborated Before Hideo Kojima and Lake have partnered once again.
This would not be the first time the two industry legends have collaborated. In the first Death Stranding game, players can communicate with the hologram of an Npc bearing Lake’s likeness.

As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

If curating the Best Action Movies of All Time felt borderline impossible, then ranking just the top entries from this century is Mission Barely Manageable.
Most franchise IP blockbusters released to big box office hauls in recent years could qualify as “action movies” in one way or another. That’s particularly true when it comes to the omnipresent cultural phenomenon we call superhero films. It can be tempting to write off the entire action genre when all you see is the over-pixelated epics about super-somethings stopping intergalactic injustice that make up an increasingly large chunk of modern Hollywood. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget workaround. When done well, action movies can tell great character-driven stories through movement. Action — acted or animated — is simply drama made dynamic.
That principle is what separates so many of the movies on...

Guy Ritchie’s spin-off television series to his 2019 film The Gentlemen was launched on Netflix earlier this month, and even though all eyes have been on the lead actor, Theo James, there’s a guest star who has had quite a deep connection with video games in the now-distant past.
Peter Serafinowicz stars as Tommy Dixon, who is the brother of Pearce Quigley’s John “The Gospel” Dixon, the leader of the Scouse crime family, which may have been an interesting role to play, but not everyone knows about his much more intriguing collaboration with FromSoftware nearly a decade ago.
In fact, Serafinowicz actually ended up voicing a character in a major Souls-like title after outing himself as a massive fan of the genre.

Another year, another group of films grow older. The culture of films and television were drastically different during this period; superhero films were a niche sub-genre and romantic and raunchy comedies were a hot ticket. Just like in any era of films, there was always a group that managed to stand the test of time and remain enjoyable by today’s standards. This list will focus on the six excellent films that helped define 2004 and still make a lasting impression upon viewing in the current landscape of films and television. Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

When it comes to grumpy but lovable men, Bill Nighy has it nailed. He plays Simon Pegg’s grumpy zombie step-dad in Shaun of the Dead with lovable charm, and washed-up grumpy rockstar Billy Mack in Love Actually, for which he won a Bafta for best supporting actor. In 2006, he won a Golden Globe for TV movie Gideon’s Daughter where he plays an, um, grumpy publicist on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Over the years horror has evolved into many weird, wonderful and gruesome as f**k genres; the 70s saw slashers emerge with films such as Prom Night and Halloween, then by the 90s (and beyond) the Scream franchise took on the horror mantle for slasher flicks. We’ve also been treated to classic monster movies that began with the likes of Frankenstein in 1931, to the sexy, arthouse stylings of Giallo horror, while splatter flicks, also known as torture porn, burst onto the scene in the brutal eye-gouging form of Hostel, while the supernatural still play a major role in scaring audiences nowadays. Of course, these are just the tip of the spooky iceberg when it comes to the delightful smorgasbord of horror subgenres, and there’s one that continues to thrill fans on both the small screen and theatrically; the zombie movie. However, up until 2004, the zombie genre had offered some amazing titles,...

The tropes of horror comedy go back a long way; the genre probably dates to “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” released in 1948, with a few electro-roots in “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Yet the good ones all share something: a combo of flavors — scary and funny, violent and knockabout — that’s bold and tart and bracingly blended. A good horror comedy is a genre smoothie that wakes you right up.
But then there’s “Lisa Frankenstein,” a horror-com smoothie made mostly of ancient, moldy fruit. At this point, what a movie like this one tends to have going against it is the sheer past-the-sell-by-date creakiness of a genre that has now spent too many decades placing monsters and zombies in a so-normal-it’s-wicked high-camp setting. The original ghoulie sitcoms, “The Munsters” and “The Addams Family,” are 60 years old. “Young Frankenstein” is 50 years old. Even monster cereals like Count Chocula and Franken...

The simple, straightforward idea of actor-comedian Nick Frost in full-on berserker mode all but sells itself. On the strength of that idea alone, failure should be the least likely of likely options. Unfortunately, Krazy House, the latest film from writer-directors Steffen Haars and Flip Van der Kuil, fails on practically every level, promising far more than Frost-in-berserker mode and somehow delivering almost nothing across a tediously self-indulgent, bloated, sub-90-minute-running time, and blood- and gore-splattered Frost wasting his considerable talents to no discernible avail. Haars and Van del Kuil wrap the promising concept of Frost-in-berserker mode around a fictitious 90s Christian-themed sitcom centered on the Christian family. It’s both what...

David Emge, whose brief acting career included a performance that would become iconic to horror fans – he played the doomed pilot-turned-zombie in George Romero’s 1978 Dawn of the Dead – died January 20 at the West River Health Campus in Evansville, Indiana. He was 77.
His death was announced by his family to the Evansville Courier & Press. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Born September 9, 1946 in Evansville, Emge began his acting career at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in 1971, landing a small role in the lowbrow 1976 sex comedy The Liberation Of Cherry Jankowski (a.k.a. The Booby Hatch) before moving first to Washington, D.C., where he performed in dinner theater, and then to New York City, where Romero spotted him working as a chef.
Impressed, Romero cast Emge as helicopter pilot Stephen “Flyboy” Andrews, an accident-prone but well-meaning news pilot who escapes the undead apocalypse to find safety with a few...

Nick Frost has entered the Viking village.

Exclusive: Patrick Warburton will star in and produce The Unearthly, an indie blending elements of sci-fi, comedy and horror that will go into production in Connecticut early this year. Directing the pic for Centerboro Productions is Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye).
In The Unearthly, a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a “Halloween Special” ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder, archaic Emf meter, and his own smarts in his ghost hunting. A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

With Thanksgiving just behind us, some people probably forgot the crucial rule of the holiday—don’t eat too much or you’ll make yourself sick. Well, that mantra is good in a number of situations. Too much of a good thing just ruins the experience. And for filmmaker Edgar Wright, he believes too many franchise films has led us to a point where fans are losing their excitement.

Edgar Wright may be behind the Cornetto trilogy and the “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” universe, thanks to a new animated Netflix series, but the auteur is now speaking out on franchise fatigue as a whole.
While appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, without calling out specific franchises, Wright stressed the importance of creating fresh material or new takes on beloved stories.
“I think one of the problems with film franchises is sometimes when they announce — I’m not mentioning any names or anything — when they announce like massive slates of films and TV shows […] there’s a danger of killing the golden goose,” he said. “I would never want to besmirch any franchises because I’m 49 now, and it’s a different thing if maybe you have kids, and it’s about introducing your kids to the franchises. Even though Edgar Wright doesn’t necessarily hit it out of the park with each of his films, the films he’s made that people love—people obsess over. Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.
It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.

Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy is one of those movie trilogies that is linked in nearly every way except narratively. In other words, while visual elements, themes, actors and even jokes repeat between 2004's "Shaun of the Dead," 2007's "Hot Fuzz" and 2013's "The World's End," the films don't actually share any characters or even take place in the same universe. That's because it was formed as a joke in and of itself at first, with a throwaway reference to the Italian mini-ice cream cones in "Shaun" leading to Wright and actor/co-writer Simon Pegg attempting to emulate (and lightly parody) other thematic trilogies such as the "Three Colours" trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
Ever since "The World's End," there's been no further reference to Cornettos or the characters and events in the Trilogy in Wright's work — until now. As Wright's film adaptation of creator Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series of comics,...

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
