Sanjay Khan convinced the author Bhagwan Gidwani to hand over the rights of his book. This was in 1978. Sanjay Khan threw a party in Mumbai to launch the book. He was going to make Tipu Sultan as a film. He claimed he signed Dilip Kumar , Dharmendra and Hollywood actor Omar Shariff,Zeenat Aman and himself for the film. The film later got delayed for several reasons. This angered Gidwani. He thought the project would be made into a film very fast . This is when B. R. Chopra got involved and wanted to make the film. But Sanjay refused to part with the rights despite not making the film himself. A fight broke out between Chopra and Khan in the media. B.R. Chopra walked out of the film "Habba Khatoon" starring Sanjay Khan, Zeenat Aman and Raj Kapoor.
Some of the victims were Allauddin Khan (Director of Audiography), Dhiraj Doshi (Assistant Director and son of Lalit Kumar Doshi), Mahesh Kumar Martin (Camera Attendant), Aaslam Sheikh ( Cameraman and husband of Christine Sheikh), V. S. Karekar, and Sanjay Khan's assistant Kamal Pasha.
Several of the victims' families complained that Sanjay Khan and his wife did not pay for any of the bills or offer monetary help.
Deepti Naval and Mukesh Khanna were signed on but later opted out.
