Maillan goes to Japan
The death of Jacqueline Maillan was a major loss for the French stage ,for she was at her best on stage ,her movies being generally mediocre. She portrays a Jewish woman ,working ,of course, as a pawnbroker in Brooklyn whose daughter is to marry a diplomat from the Japan embassy .Being a bit over possessive she decides to accompany the newly-weds in their new country. She will reveal herself much less narrow-minded ,much more tolerant and smarter than we thought first. It's of course full of clichés ,but La Maillan makes it all worthwhile,as Sarah Jacobi ,the stingy woman with a big heart .It was a triumph for her on stage ,adapted by Barillet and Gredy ,her favorite writers.
