Perhaps the most subjective genre in cinema, the same comedy can cause one viewer to have tears of laughter and another to not crack a smile. So, while knowing there can be no definitive list of the finest in the genre, the Writers Guild of America attempted to narrow down the 101 funniest screenplays. Noting the distinction from the best in the genre, these 101 films should simply produce the most laughs.
Topping the list is Woody Allen‘s Best Picture-winning Annie Hall, a choice difficult to argue with. Rounding out the top five were Some Like it Hot, Groundhog Day, Airplane! and Tootsie, while films from the Coens, Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, and Edgar Wright were also mentioned. There are also some genuine head-scratching inclusions, including The Hangover at 30, and, as much as I enjoy the film, Bridesmaids nearly making the top 15, but overall, if one is looking to brighten their mood,...

It's probably safe to assume that the most-quoted genre in all of cinema is probably comedy. A good comedy — and there have been many over the years — can come up with at least five or or six above-average zingers, lines that are sure to be remembered, cherished and repeated to the point where it stops being funny ... and then comes around to being even funnier.
Here are some of the funniest quotes from 50 of our favorite comedies — in meme form, for your re-posting convenience. Share the laughter, why don'tcha?
1. 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' (2005)
2. 'Airplane!' (1980)
3. 'Along Came Polly' (2004)
4. 'American Pie' (1999)
5. 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' (2004)
6. 'Arthur' (1981)
7. 'Beverly Hills Cop' (1984)
8. 'The Big Lebowski' (1998)

It's not easy to put together a top 100 of just about anything, but the folks over at Yahoo! Movies have really thrown down the gauntlet this time with a list of the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die. In describing the list, they maintain that their goal was to choose the "funniest" movies out there, not necessarily the "best" comedies. With that in mind, you might think they'd stay away from critically acclaimed classics and lean more toward low brow, quick and easy laughfests. But you'd be wrong. There are a lot of classics on this list, everything from The Apartment to Dr. Strangelove to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times and Buster Keaton's The General. There are also movies on here that aren't really "comedies" per se, such as Pulp Fiction and Martin Scorsese's After Hours. More than anything, this serves as a reminder that what is...

Comedy is very subjective, so this list may not represent your favorite comedic moments in cinema. Time Out London has compiled their list of the 100 Best Comedies Of All Time, and did it in a unique manner. 200 people that work in, with, or around comedy were surveyed to find out their top ten comedies. Then those lists were averaged to get the top 100.
The cool thing about the list is that the mag also included thet top ten of each person surveyed, including Edgar Wright, Dan Aykroyd and The Office creator, Steven Merchant. Below is the top 100 and a few other top ten lists. To check out all the lists visit Time Out London.
100. Sister Act (1992)
99. Carry on Screaming (1966)
98. Brazil (1985)
97. Swingers (1996)
96. BASEketball (1998)
95. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
94. Midnight Run (1988)
93. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

91. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
90. Mean Girls (2004)

From time to time, major organizations such as the AFI give us lists of the best movies of all time. There's some kind of grand countdown from 100 to 1 and then we debate for a few days over how low this one was ranked or why was another ranked too high. And most of the time, we rarely get a glimpse behind the process. Time Out London has just released their list of the 100 Best Comedies Of All Time but have done it in a fun and uniquely transparent way. They surveyed over 200 people who work in, with, or around comedy and asked them for their top tens. Then they averaged all those lists together to come up with the top 100. The best part, though, is that all the lists are public. So instead of just listing the 100 best comedies of all time, we can also find out which ten comedies...

No, no, this is not an excuse to make a bunch of gay jokes. I actually and earnestly think that these movies would be better if they were a little gayer. In some instances the homosexual relationship would just make for a better narrative. In other instances the actual romantic lead is so dull or uninspiring that my desire for gayness is also a desire to write them out of the film. And sometimes the two dudes or ladies are very, very pretty and I would enjoy seeing them make lie down kisses with each other. Let me be clear, not every bromance is gay. Despite all that I Love You, Man nonsense, there is Zero sexual tension between Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. I never once got the urge to holler, "Slap-a His Bass, Man!!" Similarly, just because two chicks hang out and love each other, that doesn't mean...

Last week there were some Blu-ray deals to note and this week there are a couple more. Here's a list of some I found particularly intriguing: The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset [Blu-ray] - $49.99 GoodFellas [Blu-ray] - $10.49 The Departed [Blu-ray] - $9.29 True Grit [Blu-ray] - $14.99 The Dark Knight [Blu-ray] - $10.99 Once Upon a Time in the West [Blu-ray] - $10.49 Avatar (3-Disc Extended Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] - $19.99 With Father's Day coming up it only makes sense that these titles are priced to move, and with the sale items out of the way, let's have a look at this week's new crop.
Battle: Los Angeles Kevin just wrote up an entertaining review for this Blu-ray, which you can read right here. After reading it I was trying to figure out how his thoughts compared to mine when I gave the film a "C+" in my review back...
