Stars: Andrew Kotting, Eden Kotting, MacGillivray, Iain Sinclair | Directed by Andrew Kotting
Andrew Kotting directs this curious experimental film with Anonymous Bosch (Edith Walks) working the cinematography. A reunion, too, between Iain Sinclair and Kotting, who have previously collaborated on the acclaimed Swandown, By Our Selves and Edith Walks. A work of artist, poet, dreamer, photographer, writer, filmmaker and, obviously, curator, The Whalebone Box isn’t something you’ve seen before, it’s… well… elsewhere.
The Whalebone Box introduces us to a box, made from whalebone and washed up on a beach, entangled in the nets of a fisherman. It’s said that the box has the ability to heal or change those who touch it. This curiosity begins a journey, with the box, which was given, over thirty years ago, to Iain Sinclair, a writer and filmmaker, is taken 800 miles from London to the Outer Hebrides, to be returned to sculptor Steve Dilworth,...

Borrowing its name from Edgar G. Ulmer’s low-budget hard-boiled classic and a key plot device from one of Hitchcock’s finest, Detour is a movie built from unabashed nods toward a thriller lexicon. But even with three of the big screen’s most dynamic up-and-comers at its center, there’s no flesh and blood beneath all the posturing. Christopher Smith’s self-consciously stylish genre homage finally feels like a baby film noir, playacting without the requisite bone-deep dread.

"Don't regret the things you do, just the things you don't." Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a gritty crime thriller titled Detour, a neo-noir from filmmaker Christopher Smith (of Creep, Triangle, Black Death). The fantastic young cast in this is lead by Tye Sheridan (seen in Mud, X-Men: Apocalypse), Emory Cohen (seen in Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines) and Bel Powley (seen in The Diary of a Teenage Girl). The film involves Sheridan playing a young law student named Harper, who meets a grifter and his companion who get him into all kinds of trouble. Also featuring Stephen Moyer, John Lynch, Jared Abrahamson and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The most interesting aspect is the split-screen narrative, which seems like a unique twist but you'll have to see the film to find out how exactly it plays into the story. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Christopher Smith's Detour,...

While the concept of upcoming Russian horror Diggers (Диггеры) will undoubtedly remind some of Christopher Smith's Creep there's plenty here to like on its own merits. When the last train of the night blows through the station and disappears deep into the tunnel system beneath Moscow rather than stopping and releasing its passengers, and when authorities successfully stifle all talk of the disappeared train and passengers, it falls to a group of young people to work their way into the tunnel system to try and discover what has happened to their friends. And while I have no idea if they succeed in finding what they went in looking for, they certainly find something.Production values on the Tikhon Kornev film look absolutely first rate. Take a...

Looking for a good family film this Christmas? See Paddington. Or if you've seen that, you could try Get Santa
This is a film where Santa goes Awol on Christmas Eve, leading to a race against time to make sure the kids of the world get their presents on time. There are many like it, but this one is called Get Santa.
More than that, however, the film revolves around ex-con Steve Anderson, (Rafe Spall) a getaway driver who's been released from prison on parole, just in time for Christmas. Looking forward to spending December 24th with his son Tom, (Kit Connor) he's dismayed when a stranded Santa (Jim Broadbent) hijacks their day together by insisting that only Steve and his son can save Christmas.
Santa then gets himself in worse trouble while trying to recover his reindeer from Battersea Dogs Home (yep, really) and lands himself in the same...

Christmas comes with a bit of grit this year – and no, not the stuff they sprinkle on the roads before it snows. Christopher Smith, the British writer/director behind horror films like Severance, Creep and Black Death, has put Santa in the slammer just as the big day approaches. But parents shouldn't be alarmed, because despite the ominous set-up, this is actually a warm and witty family caper.
Keeping with tradition, Rafe Spall plays loveable loser Steve, who hasn't seen his little boy Tom (the lively Kit Connor) since getting banged up. Naturally, after a few years in the slammer, Steve makes a beeline to visit his son as soon as he's released. Steve is no hard-nut, more a misguided Cockney geezer who's finally got his priorities straight,...

Not one to miss the opportunity for a quirky ongoing low-budget franchise, Jason Blum - via his Blumhouse banner - has made a deal to spin a trilogy from the upcoming indie horror Creep. Mark Duplass and and Patrick Brice's indie festival hit wrings psychological weirdness from a two-character microcosm, but all involved are confident at the prospect of "expanding the Creep world".Not to be confused with Christopher Smith's excellent London Underground scarefest from a decade ago, this Creep involves cameraman Brice accepting a too-good-to-be-true offer of $1000 to spend a day documenting the life of Duplass' mysterious Josef. The idea is that Josef doesn't have long to live, and wants to leave a My Life-style video legacy for his son. But as we get past the initial 24 hours it becomes clear that the real agenda is something altogether different.Duplass and Brice co-wrote as well as starring,...

By 2010, Hollywood’s obsession with 3D movies was in full swing. James Cameron’s Avatar may have given audiences a taste of what the cutting edge of stereoscope could look like, but it has to be said that the movies ushered into cinemas in its wake were a decidedly mixed bunch. Toy Story 3's 3D was extraordinarily effective, yet Clash Of The Titans looked like a blurry mess. How To Train Your Dragon came to life in its flying sequences, but the less said about the horribly murky Last Airbender, the better.

Other websites choose not to post about certain genre Kickstarter projects because of the accessibility it gives to aspiring and even established directors. Some view it as a “handout”, I don’t feel that way. Horror has always felt very communal to me. Fans of the genre stick together through thick or thin. There are success stories and there are also horror stories of the platform and rarely do genre sites post follow up posts about the Kickstarter projects they post after the deadline passes. It was a dark and stormy night at Greendale Community College when "Community" was terrorized by the A**-Crack Bandit in "Basic Intergluteal Numismatics." Not even the returns of Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver) and Star-Burns -- plus a brief cameo from Ben Folds -- could alleviate the dim mood.
"Dark," by the way, is a literal thing in this "Community" episode. With a blue filter on the camera and a whole bunch of mood lighting, the show takes on a new identity. It might be "The Killing." We could be watching a David Fincher movie like "Fight Club" or "Se7en."
This makes sense though. When a criminal is sticking coins where the sun don't shine, there can be no true sunshine for anyone.

Many talented directors live in the shadows and are rarely recognized for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we are shining the spotlight on five of our favorite underrated horror directors.
Christopher Smith
Christopher Smith has churned out some truly underrated contemporary classics and he himself is vastly underrated on the landscape of horror filmmakers. His films Severance and Creep are vastly different in tonality but both display an affection and understanding of the horror genre not unlike some of the great genre film directors of years past. Severance is full of witty one-liners and contrasted by a hefty dose of ultra violence.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Bobcat Goldthwait, Buddy Giovinazzo & Joe Dante Among Fantasia Fest’s 2013 Frontieres Co-Prod Market
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival – it takes place this year between July 18 and August 6 and has always been about more than just the films. They offer plenty of panel discussions and master classes every year, and last year’s edition introduced the Frontières International Co-Production Market, uniting North American, European, and Australasian talent and funders in an initiative focused specifically on fostering genre film productions and relationships. Noteworthy projects from the inaugural edition included new works from seasoned filmmakers such as Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), as well as up-and-coming talent like Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution), Paul Campion (The Devil’s Rock), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), and Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are). At the Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous – a sort of three-day industry cocktail party – professional introductions were made, and many of the projects found co-producers and/or international sales agents.

Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, widely acclaimed as one of the largest and most influential genre film festivals in the world, is proud to announce the official selections of the second edition of its Frontières International Co-Production Market.
Frontières is the first and only international co-production market to connect North America with Europe, in an environment focused specifically on genre film production. It was just announced last week that Frontières will become a circuit in-between Fantasia, in July, and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, in April. This initiative was made possible by funding from the Media Mundus program of the European Commission. Frontières was the only new initiative to be funded by the program this year.

From Bond to Bourne to hairy monsters and sub-humans, cinema has always loved the tube
The freshest image of the tube in moviegoers' memories is not an encouraging one: a train crashing through the walls of an underground chamber and crumpling into a heap right where James Bond should have been standing. Luckily (and implausibly), the train in Skyfall was empty: although Javier Bardem was a villain, he had at least checked the schedules to cause minimum disruption to the service.
The cinematic possibilities of the tube are as myriad as its destinations. It's a great place for action and chases (The Bourne Ultimatum and Patriot Games got there before Skyfall). It's a realm of concealment, strangeness and subterranean nightmares, but it's a refuge, too. For film-makers, the tube is also very convenient: not only does it boast controllable light and a steady climate, it can also provide a mirror image of the city above.

It was pretty much nailed on but a third season of the truly unique horror series 'American Horror Story' has been officially announced. FX have confirmed that another 13 episode series has been ordered by Fox and like its predecessors will begin production at some point next Summer and makes its TV premiere during October 2013. They'll have to go some way, once again, to top the insaneness and mouth opening themes of the current series still airing. FX President John Landgraf spoke of co-creators and executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk saying '..the notion of doing an anthological series of miniseries with a repertory cast - has proven groundbreaking, wildly successful and will prove to be trendsetting. We can't wait to see what deviously brilliant ideas they come up with for their third miniseries...' And neither can we! Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto ('Star Trek'), Lily Rabe,...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

The second season of FX's award-winning TV show 'American Horror Story' premiered last night. Unfortunately it doesn't air in the UK until Tuesday 30 October so I'll try not to spoil anything just yet. But the good news that's coming direct from creator Ryan Murphy is that actor and star of the original series Dylan McDermott is set to make a return. He tweeted 'So thrilled to announce that Dylan McDermott will be returning to American Horror Story'. This comes as somewhat a surprise as McDermott was originally confirmed to Not be making an appearance in the new Asylum season. Episode 2, entitled 'Tricks And Treats' is set to air stateside on 24 October at 10:00pm e/p wherein the staff summon an exorcist to deal with a possessed farm boy, while Sister Jude's (played by Jessica Lange) dark past is revealed. Zachary Quinto, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy,...

Horror is about finding what scares us, or makes us feel uncomfortable and using that against us. It’s that fear of the dark, or the sudden attack out of nowhere, or that shadowy figure following us at night. One of the scenarios that seem to be popular is the fear of being trapped underground and attacked by creatures that are more adapted to that environment. We’ve had Creep, The Descent, Urban Explorers and now Underground, just to name a few.
When a group of friends get stuck underground after a fight at a party on an abandoned army base they find themselves being hunted by creatures in the darkness. As they fight for survival and to save their friends...

And they keep on coming as we hit our ninth revealed teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of hit horror FX series 'American Horror Story'. The new clip entitled 'Taste' features nothing more than a hottie (who looks like new sexy cast member Jenna Dewan (below) to me) taking a little red pill. But when any of these short clips features the ominous tones of the Ahs theme tune then everything becomes truly unsettling. The likelihood will be that most, if not all, of these special promos will somehow feature or be blended together into an unnerving opening credit sequence when the new 'Asylum' season premieres this October. The Hollywood Reporter have bought news that 'Scott and the studio actively are pushing ahead with a follow-up (stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed) and are talking to new writers because Prometheus co-scribe Damon Lindelof might not be available.' Production on the all-change second season of 'American Horror Story' is well underway and because of its new characters, new location and just a completely different story to that of the first season it would be a good idea to somehow seperate the two seasons even further don't you think? Luckily creator Ryan Murphy has the same idea and has opted to give the upcoming season 2 a new subtitle to help reflect its new setting and theme. 'American Horror Story: Asylum' will be what the new FX season is referred to as.
