Best Star Wars game of the modern era!
samog-9828922 April 2023
Since Disney cancelled Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron here's my spoiler-free review of my favourite star wars games of the early 2000s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III - Rebel Strike! As usual, I'll be talking about my thoughts, my childhood memories of playing this videogame & my conclusion/rating! This was an exciting and entertaining game to play, the voice acting is brilliant, the stories are interesting & intriguing, the vehicles were cool and epic to fly/ride & it was breathtaking! I played this videogame first on the GameCube then I had the saved transferred data on the Nintendo Wii. When my brother and I were kids our hands were so small that we couldn't press the buttons quickly so we had to get our Dad to help us out! Overall if you played this game back in the day like my Brother, Dad & myself then you've officially joined the rebellion after Disney fired Gina Carano that's why I'm giving this a 7/10! Hopefully, you can play this game and have fun may the force be with you! ;-)

Hardest of trio, but actually well worth your time.

While most say II is best (some say original), knowing this one's true greatness can make this one your fave. Everyone loves the multiplayer, three '80's arcade games based on original trilogy, bonus features similar to RL, and some of story campaign (i.k. The Jedi starfighter!). Biggest complain from most are the on foot missions, primarily the fact that your aim is locked on to one enemy at the time. Some also complained about constantly holding down R button for AT-ST missions, plus Jedi lightsaber segments not having a big enough role. Secretly a good thing because they make this the most complex of three (plus spinoff Battle for Naboo) and step up for a part III for game franchises ideally being most challenging. Also surprised there was criticism toward with stuck on shooting one foe because it truly helps with your shot accuracy for ace medals, even higher than gold. Similar to The Completionist's review on Star Fox Zero, which is heavily criticized for its on foot difficulty, he concluded, "Trust me. As soon as you get the hang of the controls all around, you're gonna love this!" Gave it a "fini-pete it" rating--equivalent to 9 if not a swell 10/10. Exactly how you will feel about this gem of a Star Wars game.

sigh, lets see...

well, where to begin? this game isn't bad, but its still not that great. the graphics are awesome, blows me away, and the actors for the voice overs sound like the actors. however, the new features, like the "on foot combat" is atrocious, way to sporadic and random. the flight is great, best in the series, but there just isn't enough of it, and the whole idea is kind of milked out. the co-op is good, adding a new challenge, the old rogue squadron 2 is in there, as well as a versus mode with a lot of fun to be had, i would rent this game if you had a friend over and play the co-op, but the single player is just to bad, if they had done something like battlefront for the on-foot combat, we would have a great game, however, they didn't, its a real shame, however the old arcade games are there to find and play, plus a lot of unlock able vehicles, however, that just doesn't do it for me, 6/10

The Force is NOT strong with this one
Field7828 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I loved Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader when it came out for the GameCube, and must have worn out at least one controller from playing it. The solid graphics, great Dolby Sound and great level design made it an experience that throroughly breathed the Star Wars atmosphere, even in the levels that didn't play out scenes from the films. Now I heared some complaints that people didn't like the mission objectives, and the fact that they didn't get as much freedom to move around as compared to Rogue Squadron, but since I never played that game, that was not an issue for me.

I do, however, have this problem with Rebel Strike. The first mission is a spectacular escape from Yavin IV as the Empire attacks the Rebel base. It looks great, with Tie Fighters all over the sky, but the mission is limited to simply protecting some ships and disabling selected targets. If you try to engage the TIEs, you are immediately told not to focus on the fighters and leave that to others. Really disappointing, considering that those who played Rogue Squadron destroyed two Death Stars, and should be given something more than a menial job in the sequel. Or at least the freedom to choose how you tackle your mission.

The rest of the missions are a bit better. We again see missions based on scenes from the movie trilogy, and we are happy to play an active role in them. The missions where you command an Imperial Walker are some of the best parts of the game, and all missions featuring an X-Wing or other fighter are pretty good as well. However, they are in sharp contrast to a lot of the other missions where they try to force some variation. They needed to conceive of a story and settings to tie all the missions together, but they didn't do a very good job to make it feel naturalistic. Some missions get dangerously close to fan pleasing. A race with speeder bikes on a planet with canyons that are continuously struck by lightning: looks spectacular but it feels out of place, and it makes no sense: this is an open space, not a dense forest, so it could just as easily been done in a fighter. The same goes for a incidental crash-landing on Geonosis so that you get to fight Battle Droids and use seismic charges. As if the guys at design did a brainstorm session and continuously said "Let's do this because it's cool!' without wondering if it actually makes any sense.

Much has been said about the decision to feature walking missions where you navigate the Death Stars interiors, the frozen surface of Hoth and many other places. These are arguably the biggest disappointments in the game because they simply don't work. You get to run around, but it is in third-person mode and with auto-aim, so its mostly button-bashing while you are walking from cutscene to cutscene. Had this been in first-person mode or actually require some skill (like aiming or seeking cover), it could have been fun, but now they feel like filler material just for the sake of featuring scenes from the trilogy. The training mission with Yoda should have been a tutorial level: frustrating platform jumping action, no fun challenge whatsoever. And the storyline even manages to badly cram in a subplot involving a traiterous Rebel who decides to turn up at the end as Han is trying to blow up the Death Star's shield generator. They tried too desperately to tell a story-within-a-story, but it doesn't quite fit. Really too bad that they had to resort to this kind of forced storytelling, since the storyline of Rogue Squadron felt so intricately but subtly weaved through the existing saga without disrupting the overall story.

Nice graphics, some good missions, but sadly the story and gameplay would have deserved some more effort, making this game feel like a Death Star with an obvious design flaw, making it too easy to shoot down.

good but sometimes very bland

This game has a lot going for it, such as the co operative multi player of the original game! and some amazing graphics to boot. However the walking sections are just dam right terrible despite them being centred around familiar events in the original trilogy such as the death star. However they could and should have been so much better. Despite the walking and the AT ST levels the speeder bike was ace and me and my bro spent hours racing each other. On the whole a good sequel however the non flying levels do let this down (and the crappy attack of the clones level in the asteroid belt and on the ground) The inclusion of the original arcade games is also a nice touch

On the whole i would give this 3 potatoes out of 5
