Barbara Crampton has been a mainstay in the horror community for more than thirty years, but she’d rather not be called a “Scream Queen.” In a recent essay, Crampton explained that for her, the term is reductive and dismisses the nuances and hard work that go into her roles. I can understand if she wants her legacy to carry more complexity than a catchy nickname, especially considering the wide range of roles that Crampton has contributed to the horror genre. In the past, she played a medical student hounded by reanimated corpses in Re-Animator, and more recently, she portrayed a grieving mother haunted by her past (as well as actual ghosts) in We Are Still Here, as well as the sinister host of a VHS board game in Beyond the Gates.

New England horror hounds have to be pleased with the way their region has paid tribute to their terror-inducing native sons. This past Halloween season, an unveiling of an Edgar Allan Poe bronze bust took place at the Boston Public Library, while Jeffrey Combs portrayed Poe in a one-man show at the Somerville Theatre. And soon the Narragansett Brewing Company will commemorate another prolific horror author, Rhode Island’s own H.P. Lovecraft, with a four-part beer line inspired by the author’s written works.
Narragansett Beer President Mark Hellendrung revealed the new Lovecraft beers are being brewed to celebrate both the 125th anniversary of the storied brewery and the 125th birthday of the late, influential horror writer whose Cthulhu Mythos still resonates today with readers, writers, musicians, and other artists.

Fango got word from Renegade Arts Entertainment that readers (and listeners) can now purchase the first installment of Doug Bradley’S Spine Chillers. Volume One of the audiobook, subtitled Classic Horror Stories, features the horror veteran lending his voice to tales by Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Charles Dickens, William F. Harvey and Saki.
The first edition of Spine Chillers, which we last told you about here, contains Harvey’s “The Beast With Five Fingers,” about an evil, murderous, disembodied hand, and his “August Heat,” a frightening tale dwelling on questions of fate; Poe’s classic “The Tell-Tale Heart,” about the maddening guilty conscience of a murderer, that will provide a pounding heart both through your headphones and in your own chest; Lovecraft’s “The Outsider,” about a man all alone in the world and his attempts to make contact; Dickens’ ghost tale “The Signalman,” in which a haunting specter...

While Doug Bradley was recording the book-on-tape version of Clive Barker’s Mister B Gone (review), he had the thought that books on tape haven’t really advanced since their early cassette days, and he wanted to do something about it.
So “Doug Bradley’s Spine Chillers” was created, a series of readings of famous literature works performed by Doug Bradley, with visual accompaniment and a full soundtrack to enhance the experience. We just got word that the first of the “Spine Chillers” series, H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Outsider”, is now up the official site for Doug's production house, Renegade Arts, just waiting for you to come check it out.
You can learn more about the series, the next entry of which will be Poe’s “The Tell Tale Heart”, over on Doug’s site, or just click here for a three-minute sample of “The Outsider”!
