Best Song Oscar 2016 contender 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. 74 entries in contention for 2016 Best Song Academy Award 'Tis the season for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce the semi-finalists – in some instances, the semi-semi-finalists – for the Academy Awards. Today, the Academy released the list of songs eligible for the 2016 Best Song – or rather, Best Original Song – Oscar. There are 74 contenders, with titles ranging from “Happy” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to “Hypnosis” and “Bhoomiyilenghanumundo.” Curiously, apart from the inevitable animated and/or kiddie flicks (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Anomalisa, Pan, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Home, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, etc.) most of this year's contenders are songs from smaller movies and Bollywood/South Asian releases. Exceptions include Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, Ryan Coogler's Creed, Kenneth Branagh's...

Despite the modest wider success of "Far from the Madding Crowd," better-than-expected results for "I'll See You in My Dreams" and decent grosses for "Iris," it's been seven weeks since a platformed film has earned a per screen average above $20,000. It's not the season. In the same period last year, "Fading Gigolo," "Locke," "Belle" and "Chef" all surpassed that, and "Ida" was just behind. (When "Far from the Madding Crowd" opened in several cities, that lowered its average.). Plenty of high quality films are being released every week. And while the first part of the year yielded several strong post-Oscar specialty releases, since then the market has stalled. "Results" (Magnolia), "Heaven Knows What" (Radius/Weinstein) and "Gemma Bovary" (Music Box) all scored top theaters in their initial markets and mostly good reviews, but none came...

On most years, Memorial Day weekend launches the first or second weekends of several major specialized successes, such as "Before Midnight," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Tree of Life," and "Midnight in Paris." Even last year saw the modest debut of "Words and Music" ($88,000 in 10 theaters). This year? The best of the openers was mid-level Studio Ghibli animated release "When Marnie Was There" (GKids). Second weekend "I'll See You in My Dreams" (Bleecker Street) expanded impressively, showing once again that older audiences will respond to a star-driven story. Other news this week was the confirmation that the New York Times' is continuing to cut back on their review coverage. This week, two they skipped -- Indian "Tanu Weds Manu Returns" and the VOD-showing "Chocolate City" --both actually managed decent results despite the slight. Opening "When Marnie Was There" (GKids) - Criticwire:...

Today's MPAA ratings bulletin brings a couple of notable titles beginning with Brad Bird's Tomorrowland starring George Clooney, which has scored a PG-rating, which isn't exactly a surprise, but an interesting rating given this era of PG-13 blockbusters as there is clearly a hope of appealing to the family audience with this one. Also from the Disney ranks comes the latest animated Pixar feature, Inside Out, which also scored a PG-rating while the short film Lava that will play in front of the film received a to-be-expected G-rating. Fox Searchlight's Sundance acquisition Me and Earl and the Dying Girl landed a PG-13 rating while the R-ratings were reserved for the likes of Russell Crowe's directorial debut The Water Diviner, the upcoming thriller Unfriended, Noah Baumbach's latest with Greta Gerwig Mistress America, and Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden's latest, Mississippi Grind. This week's complete bulletin is included below,...

Singer, dancer and actor whose Hollywood career was overshadowed by her marriage to Errol Flynn
The gifted singer, dancer and actor Patrice Wymore, who has died aged 87, had the misfortune to be typecast in secondary roles at Warner Bros studios in the 1950s, and to be known as the third wife of the Hollywood star Errol Flynn.
The 23-year-old Wymore and the 41-year-old Flynn got married after co-starring in Rocky Mountain (1950), a minor western in which he played an army officer who rescues her from marauding Indians, though they had no love scenes together on screen. It was Wymore's second film, while Flynn was a veteran of more than three dozen movies. It was the beginning of her film career, while his was on the slide. Both were under contract to Warner Bros.
At the time, MGM musicals reigned supreme, though Warner Bros had Doris Day, a top box-office singing star.

Directed By: Miguel Angel Vivas
Starring: Guillermo Barrientos, Dritan Biba, Fernando Cayo, Manuela Velles
Home invasion movies are usually ones that I find to be a bit on the taxing side of the horror world. These are movies filled with a different kind of horror, a horror that is real and brutal as opposed to a horror that is supernatural, gross and involves Jigsaw. I often find that I need to bulk myself up a bit before watching a film, perhaps a few push ups, maybe a protein shake and a couple reps with the free weights, who knows. I feel the need to do this because the film takes a lot out of you, it's not necessarily enjoyable to watch and it really fucks you up come to think of it. When I finish watching them, I'm usually filled with an overwhelming desire to curl up in a ball and die.

Filmax has unveiled a slew of stills from their thriller Kidnapped from director Miguel Ángel Vivas. Jaime, Marta and their daughter Isa have just moved into a luxurious new house. Marta begins to prepare the dinner and puts a bottle of champagne on ice to celebrate the move. As night falls, three hooded men violently force their way into the house. Panic ensues and soon the real violence will begin. In the press, the producers expressed they were going with "total fear" on this picture. Vivas previously directed the crime picture Reflections and a zombie short film called I'll See You in My Dreams about a man contending with this undead wife. More photos from Kidnapped can be found here .

I've written a manly pile of words praising Portugal's premier gothic metal outfit Moonspell, ever since they caught my attention with their musical contributions to Miguel Ángel Vivas's award-winning zombie short "I'll See You In My Dreams," then blew my mind with last year's Night Eternal, their best album to date. I missed the chance to see them in concert last time around, but thankfully for me and other sunlight-shunning fans in North America, they're teaming up with Swiss epic-metallers Samael for a new Us tour this fall. The details of that tour can be found after the jump. Read on! The "Night Eternal Above America" tour features Moonspell and Samael as headliners,...
