What if Tom Sawyer was Ukrainian...

I've never read Tom Sawyer but I did read Huckleberry Finn novel therefore know only a little about their story but what I saw in this movie I could not make heads and tails out of - tattered narrative with little sense in between scenes which are stitched together poorly (and I'm taking in consideration the year 1936 here). The sound also suffers, at times barely hearable and at another jumping from normal to as if coming from deep within the cellar. The actors are mostly overacting, with only a few standout characters like doctor Robinson and Jim - all the rest, including the boys who played Tom and Huck, have way too much theatricalities in their performances. Overall this is a fine production of an American novel by Ukrainians who, I suppose, knew less than a little about life in America but who have nevertheless done a splendid job in portraying it on screen - if only the script was as good as the set pieces and the actors were as involved...
