How in the hell does a small, low-budget independent movie become a massive runaway blockbuster hit and pop-cultural landmark at once? While not an exact science, there are surely several different roads to success for each production. We’ve seen it in the past with My Big Fat Greek Wedding and several others. But what about Jared Hess’ viral cult classic Napoleon Dynamite? How does a first-time filmmaker restricted by a $400,000 budget and just 23 shooting days somehow manage to make a semi-autobiographical movie based on his own experiences and still strike such a major chord among the moviegoing masses?
Seriously, how did such a big-hearted underdog of a movie made on the fly become such a beloved comedic touchstone that spoke to an entire generation? After all, it’s extremely hard to make a bad movie. It’s damn a mini-miracle to make a good movie. Yet, for Napoleon Dynamite,...

What may be most surprising about Katja von Garnier’s music doc Forever and a Day, a contemporary portrait of iconic hard rock/heavy metal German band The Scorpions, is to note their five decades worth of musical presence. Formed by Rudolf Schenker in 1965, the band allowed Garnier to tag along as they embarked on what was meant to be their Final Sting tour, an eighteen month stretch of performances which were set to wrap up in Munich. However, based on the jubilant reaction as they performed, the band decided to then extend the tour. The result becomes a ruminative pondering on the nature of an artist’s retirement and what happens when creative outlets are eventually restrained. In between playdates, Garnier completes a historical portrait of the band’s ups and downs throughout the past fifty years.
As one of the band’s managers remarks early on, “it’s...

Usually June is associated with the first real month of summer -- a time to go out and frolic through the wilderness like a snowman that doesn't know any better. But it also gets really, really hot, which has people retreating to their local multiplex or, even better, their luxuriously air-conditioned living rooms. With that in mind, take a look at the television shows and movies that will be available on Netflix's steaming service come June (via Vulture).
Thought the snail-who-dreamed-of-being-a-racecar saga ended with last summer's DreamWorks Animated joint "Turbo?" Think again. Apparently there's a television spin-off. And you can watch it on Netflix. Gabriel Aubry broke even yesterday when it came to legal wrangling in the aftermath of his Thanksgiving Day altercation with Halle Berry’s fiance, Olivier Martinez. First, the court refused to lift a prohibition on him getting within 100 yards of his and Berry’s daughter, Nahla, according to TMZ. But at the same time, law enforcement sources said he probably won’t be prosecuted for battery, since it was a case of “mutual combat.”
While all this is going on, we took a step back to review some interesting things about Halle’s current and former men, things that are sorta relevant to this situation:
1. Martinez, the son of a professional boxer, told Ocean Drive magazine last month that when he was considering taking up the sport himself, ” I a good left hook — but keep that a secret.”
2. Last year, the Telegraph named Aubry one of the top 10 earning male models in the industry.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask this question as of late, but man... what happened to Halle Berry? Back in the early 2000s, she won an Oscar for her performance in Monster's Ball and she was right at the top of Hollywood's A-list, starring in a James Bond film and the X-Men movies, among other things. Then in 2005, she made the mistake of starring in Catwoman and it all kind of went downhill from there. After a five year break with only appearances in New Year's Eve and Frankie & Alice, this year she is back with a new movie directed by John Stockwell (Into the Blue, Blue Crush) that looks to be one step above direct-to-video fare. Wait, scratch that... it actually is direct-to-video fare. Dark Tide finds Berry playing a shark expert named Kate who falls on hard times after a shark diving expedition goes awry.

The biggest villain of the summer is Shockwave (who has his own featurette) and another newcomer is Sentinel Prime. Of course Bumblebee returns and so do Linkin Park (for the soundtrack, that is).
If you think seeing the film one day early is a treasure, then wait till...

Halle Berry stars in just one of this year's shark attack movie releases - 'Dark Tide'. And now a new trailer for the movie has been spotted off the shores at YouTube. The new thriller from 'Turistas' (Aka 'Paradise Lost') director John Stockwell stars Miss Berry (below) along with 'Blood and Chocolate' star and Kylie Minogue's ex Olivier Martinez. The trailer certainly doesn't make the movie look overly thrilling but I'm sure we'll see more intensity in future trailer releases. But what the heck we get a few shots of Halle in a bikini so it's all good. Now hold your breathe and check out the new trailer below....

We've been seeing a lot of documentary filmmakers successfully make the jump to fictional films over the past few years, with people like Seth Gordon and Jeffrey Blitz going into comedy and Kevin Macdonald and Werner Herzog delving into genre films. One of the other interesting areas in which non-fiction directors have been excelling is in the found footage horror department. Daniel Stamm recently put together a strong film with The Last Exorcism and now Paramount has reportedly hired the directors of Catfish, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, to take on the third installment of their popular Paranormal Activity franchise. Can they deliver something cool or will this just be another Blair Witch 2? I, for one, am pretty excited to see what these guys can do with Paranormal Activity 3. Catfish was marketed as a thriller first and foremost, and even if you think it was staged or just plain immoral,...

Bloody-Disgusting are reporting that Paramount Pictures have hired the duo behind the fan-favourite “documentary” Catfish, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, to direct Paranormal Activity 3, the third (or fourth if you count the Japan-made official sequel Tokyo Night) installment in what has become the new Halloween-released franchise.
The third installment was written by Christopher B. Landon, the screenwriter behind the risible Twilight-esque werewolf film Blood and Chocolate and the much better Disturbia, and Schulman will co-produce the film alongside Jason Blum and the original creator Oren Peli.

In news that doesn’t excite me in the slightest, it’s been reported that Christopher B. Landon, the screenwriter behind the risible Twilight-esque werewolf film Blood and Chocolate and the director of the forthcoming Burning Palms, has been hired by Paramount to pen the screenplay for Paranormal Activity 3, the third film in producer Oren Peli’s now annual Halloween horror franchise (remind you of Saw anyone? I hope to god they don’t stretch this one out to seven installments!)
Paranormal Activity 3 was originally announced mere seconds after the second installment grossed a ridiculous $170 million worldwide. There’s no cast or plot details as yet, but we do have a release date – the film will be released on October 21st.

Christopher B. Landon has been hired by Paramount Pictures and producer Oren Peli to write the screenplay for Paranormal Activity 3, the third installment in the hugely successful low-budget horror franchise.
Landon was responsible for writing the werewolf romance film Blood and Chocolate, as well as contributing to the story of the 2007 thriller Disturbia. His directorial debut, Burning Palms, is set for release later this year.
Paranormal Activity 3 was announced late last year after the second installment grossed an estimated $170 million worldwide, from a mere $3 million budget.
Plot details for the third installment are not yet known, but expect more details to be revealed in the coming months.
Paranormal Activity 3 will be released on October 21.

The Paranormal Activity cash cow will almost certainty be ran into the ground by Paramount pictures and honestly, who can blame them? The Paranormal Activity franchise is like a money tree for Paramount Pictures. The first film was made and acquired for next to nothing (thousands of dollars) and went on to gross over $187 million worldwide. The sequel was rushed into production with a larger budget (estimated $2.75 million), and released the following year, grossing $168 million worldwide. Both films were critically praised, and a lot of people even believe that the second film was better than the first. I would argue that it's more of the same (which isn't necessarily bad) but is a story that improves the enjoyment of the first film by contributing quite a bit to the mythology. It also leaves room for another installment, so a third film is a no brainer. Actually Paramount announced an October 21st release date for Paranormal Activity 3 days after the hit theaters [1]. Oren Peli, who directed the original film in the series and produced the second,...

Christopher B. Landon and Michael R. Perry, who co-wrote Paranormal Activity 2 along with Tom Pabst, will be returning for the third installment of the popular horror franchise. Paramount Pictures has officially announced an October 21, 2011 release date. It would appear they are taking over the Saw franchise's spot as Halloween stalwarts. Oren Peli, who wrote, produced and directed the original will return as producer once again. No details have emerged for storylines though some loose ends were left out there from the second movie which makes sense to bring Landon and Perry back. Along with Paranormal Activity 2 Landon's writing credits include Disturbia and Blood and Chocolate. He also directed Burning Palms due out this Friday . Michael R. Perry's credits are grounded more in...

Bloody Disgusting has learned that Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia, Blood and Chocolate) and Michael R. Perry (who had his script features on a previous "Black List") are both responsible for penning Paranormal Activity 3 for Room 101, Paramount Pictures and producer Oren Peli. Doing a little research, while Perry is listed on IMDb as the writer of Paranormal Activity 2, Landon is now also listed as a participant. I guess you can say they're reteaming for the trilogy? Story details for the next film is being held under lock and key, but Paramount has officially announced an October 21, 2011 release date.

Halle Berry has made public her new actor boyfriend Olivier Martinez. The 44-year-old beauty made red carpet debut with the "Blood and Chocolate" actor at the Carousel of Hope gala in Beverly Hills on Saturday, October 23.
Berry looked stunning in her one-shoulder bow strap Yves Saint Laurent dress and Penny Preville earrings. The "Perfect Stranger" actress launched her biggest smile as she struck a pose for camera frenzy with Martinez, who was wrapped in a black fancy suit, by her side.
During the red carpet event, Berry and Martinez kept their hands tied into each other and an onlooker told Us Magazine that the new couple was very "smitten." The two were also said "inseparable" with Martinez "constantly leaning in and whispering in Halle's ear, making her laugh" at the event.

Sharks or not, if Halle Berry asks us to go swimming, we're jumping in the water first and asking questions later. I mean, who could resist? Certainly not the following actors who'll be joining her in her latest film, Dark Tide.
Olivier Martinez (Blood and Chocolate), Ralph Brown, Adi Shankar, Luke Stein, Mark Elderkin, Thoko Ntshinga, and Sizwe Msutu have all signed on to be potential shark bait. Look for more soon.
Synopsis
"Sara (Halle Berry) is a modern-day adventurer, deeply drawn to close encounters with the magnificent White Sharks who rule the primal predator shore of isolated Guadalupe Island. When her husband chooses ambition over his wife's safety in a split-second encounter with the jaws of death, her marriage nearly breaks apart. A year later, a monsoon season voyage back to the same island becomes an escalating series of terrifying underwater confrontations and gut-wrenching emotional challenges. Testing her courage...

My Idiot Brother… Quite interesting title for Jesse Peretz’s comedy that’s currently filming in New York.
And, what’s even more interesting is the fact that Hugh Dancy (Blood and Chocolate, Adam), Kathryn Hahn (Revolutionary Road, Step Brothers), Shirley Knight (As Good as It Gets) and Janet Montgomery (Black Swan) have signed on to join the cast that already includes Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott and Emily Mortimer.
Sounds pretty good, you must admit…
The film, already described as “a comedy about family and the sacrifices it takes to deal with them” revolves around struggling idealist (Rudd) that stays at the homes of his three more successful and ambitious sisters (Banks, Deschanel, Mortimer) and brings truth, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives.
In other words, he wreaks havoc, while dealing with their overbearing mother. The mother was the last major part...

Ahh, young budding Hollywood actresses. What bliss it is when you're a child superstar and everyone knows your name. Then comes the awkward early adult years and you either make it on your own or you turn into Lindsay Lohan. It's hit or miss but like many Miley Cyrus is trying to escape her "Disney" past by taking on a horror/thriller as her next project...
Paramount Pictures and MTV Films have teamed up on the film, which will be based on the first of three novels from Lisa McMann. Christopher Landon (“Disturbia”, “Blood and Chocolate”) will adapt the first book, “Wake” for the screen. If it’s a hit, you can bet your bottom dollar the remaining two titles in the series, “Fade” and “Gone” to follow ala the “Twilight” franchise.
The plot for “Wake” would see Cyrus playing a 17-year-old girl named Janie, who has the unwanted ability...

Pop princess no more? Probably. Like all kids who grew up on studio lots with fame and fortune well before they could drive a car, Miley Cyrus is looking to “escape” that Disney bubblegum pop princess persona that she’s been selling for years now. This is usually a phase all Hollywood/industry kids go through, though some have been more successful than others. Anne Hathaway successfully shed her “teen movie” persona by doing the risque “Havoc”. Others, like Lindsay Lohan, not so much. Thus, you have Miley Cyrus signing up the supernatural thriller “Wake”. I truly set out to make a definitive, objective list of the biggest cult films from the last five years today. However, pinning down a usable definition of "cult film" with a truly workable set of criteria was not just challenging, but nearly impossible. The one constant in definitions for cult films, however, was that they are movies that failed commercially, not just at the box office, but often in DVD sales, yet eventually found a successful second life after their initial release.
The best I could do was to spend way more hours than I expected to researching DVD sales, rental charts, and Netflix rankings from the last five years and combine those with my own anecdotal observations as a movie critic. There's no way to implement an algorithm to determine the standings (and actual figures are often very hard to come by), but in piecing together the evidence...

Cologne, Germany -- "Hector's Journey," the new feature from "The Last Station" producers Egoli Tossell, has picked up further financing, securing a €500,000 ($670,000) subsidy from the German Federal Film Board.
Katja von Garnier ("Blood and Chocolate") is directing the picture, which is based on Frank Lelord's best-selling novel about a psychiatrist who travels the world to find the secret of happiness. Egoli Tossell is co-producing with Warner Bros. Germany.
Maria von Heland, who wrote and directed the Egoli Tossell/Deutsche Columbia co-production "Girls Don't Cry" (2002) is penning the script. Shooting is set to start this summer in Germany and around the world. Regional funding body Mdm, which helped back "The Last Station," has put up €400,000 ($ 535,000) towards "Hector."
The Ffa also committed a half million Euros $736,000 towards the production of "7 Dwarves 3," the latest entry in the hugely successful German comedy franchise; and $670,000 for "Berlin Mitte," a high society satire from veteran director...

If Frankenstein's monster represents man creating life without a woman and Dracula represents sleeping with a stranger, then the werewolf is no doubt the bestiality within man. We all have some form of a dark nature encoded in our genetic make-up, the beast within if you will. Even though Vampires seem to be all the rave nowadays, I was always a greater fan of the werewolf and find them sexier than those pale, angst ridden parasites. I can't really explain it and I'm sure my attraction to aggressive members of the opposite sex has something to do with it, but that's another story. In celebration of the epic Benicio Del Toro vehicle The Wolfman, which resurrects one of Universal Pictures' classic movie monsters, I took a look at a dozen of the sexiest werewolves in movies and TV. This is not a list about the best werewolf movies ever made,...

Just like the spike in movie vampires, werewolves are now roaming big and small screens in increasing numbers thanks to The Twilight Saga. Next month The Wolfman opens, a remake of the 1941 classic that introduced most of the werewolf mythology still prevalent today. And next season, True Blood will add a handsome werewolf distraction for Sookie.

Every decade is a seemingly thin decade for horror movies. Outside of romantic comedies, it might be the most poorly executed genre that Hollywood has to offer. We are ceaselessly and ruthlessly bombarded with wave after wave of derivative, rushed, brainless, cheesy, and most of all -- not scary -- horror movies on an almost monthly basis. I find that I'll eventually see almost all of them, and my satisfaction rate is so low its almost unmeasurable. A good horror movie can be many things -- scary, spooky, atmospheric, gory, clever, interesting. It should have characters that you care about, and whatever the source of the horror is, be it ghosts, demons, serial killers, or family members, it should make you grip your armrests a little, make you gulp, make you feel some kind of tension.
There have been some decent horror movies during the course of this decade that...

Forgive me for the title — no, the inevitable Transformers 3 will (most definitely) have nothing to do with The Nightmare on Elm Street.
Nor will it have anything to do with J.J. Abram’s buddies Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who scripted Star Trek and worked on the first two Transformers films, but won’t be returning for Michael Bay’s third rampage.
Orci has direct contact with /Film on their forums, and he previously noted that it was “Time for fresh blood … the main reason we would move on is because we risk getting stale and comfortable. If you only sing one song for too long, you miss the opportunity to sing news songs. We’ll see.”
Now, the third film, slated for a release in Summer 2011, will be scripted by Ehren Kruger, who also worked on Revenge of the Fallen, as well as Blood and Chocolate and Reindeer Games.
