We revisit Tom's Midnight Garden, Moondial, The Chronicles Of Narnia and a few lesser-known UK children's TV series...
Read our look-back at UK kids' fantasy dramas 1980 - 1984 here.
By 1985 British TV's children's drama had really hit its stride, achieving "a balanced diet of programmes" as Edward Barnes, the head of the BBC children's department observed. The late 80s, arguably, saw a new golden age for spooky and magical kids drama. Excellent production values, improved significantly by well-honed special effects work using Quantel, Paintbox and Harry, and moreover some interesting casting - often of very talented newcomers - produced some of the most memorable dramas of the era.
The second half of the decade saw the BBC riding high on the back of the success of their state-of-the-art adaptation of John Masefield's Box Of Delights. Meanwhile, anthology series Dramarama was going from strength to strength on ITV.

It was a fitting finale to Super Saturday in Hall H at Comic-Con as Hugh Jackman took the stage to confirm that he’s putting on his adamantium claws for the last time in the upcoming 1983-set X-Men: Apocalypse. Jackman first sculpted his mutton chops and donned claws 16 years ago this Tuesday to play Wolverine for the first time.
“16 years of playing the legendary Wolverine is the greatest role I’ve ever played,” the actor told the crowd before ushering in a highlight reel of 16 years of X-Men movies. Jackman’s appearance was just the first of a star-studded panel that included James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, and more. The cast took a break from the Montreal set where they’ve been filming for five weeks to head to Comic-Con.

The cast of Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse" turned up in full last night at the San Diego Comic Con to talk about the film, along with showing off the first footage. Considering the movie has been widely reported about, actual details about the story have been relatively scarce with a few more revealed yesterday.
The story is confirmed to be taking place in 1983, ten years after the events of 'Days of Future Past'. Jennifer Lawrence says her Mystique is much more like Raven again, whilst Michael Fassbender's Magneto has essentially hung up his cape and is living a more simple life.
The footage, assembled from just the first five weeks of filming, starts with a young Jean Grey having a vision of the end of the world. Rose Byrne's Moira McTaggert talks about people viewing mutants as Gods and how she's been tracking one that's millennia old - the world's first mutant.

The cast for Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past follow-up X-Men: Apocalypse continues to fall into place. And the latest addition? That'd be Rose Byrne.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. X-Men: First Class was directed by Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass"), from a screenplay written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, Jane Goldman, and Matthew Vaughn. The cast included: James McAvoy as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert,...

This Gun for Hire
Written by Albert Maltz and W.R. Burnett
Directed by Frank Tuttle
U.S.A, 1942
The great American actor Alan Ladd died at the unfairly young age of 50. With a series of leading roles in some timeless classics during the 1940s and 1950s he carved himself a firm place in Hollywood lore. His quality work in such films as The Blue Dahlia, Two Years Before the Mast and Shane earned him critical acclaim as well as a bevy of movie fans. He could play cool and he could play tough as nails, yet was also clearly capable of demonstrating a subtle humane side to even his most hardened characters. One of the early films of his career that helped pave his way into stardom was the 1942, Frank Tuttle directed This Gun for Hire, a multi-genre mashing of WWII, spy and noir themes.

The cast also includes Alice Eve, Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Kevin McNally. Despite a solid cast and production The Raven failed to entertain on a number of levels.

During a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Symone opened up on her involvement with the campaign, thoughts on attending college and her reaction to dealing with the flu early while starring in “Sister Act.”
Can you talk about your involvement with the “Plan It Forward” campaign?

Michael Fassbender is perhaps the most talented, fastest rising international star. Originally born in Germany, Fassbender has grown rapidly from being primarily a television actor into a worldly thespian of staggering proportion, garnering ecstatic praise both in Europe and the United States for his unflinching, intense performances in roles that are often controversial and extraordinarily demanding. Fassbender has received some of his breakout roles in genre films, a cinematic place that only rarely produced tremendous genre-spanning talent.
In honor of this tremendous new acting force, we’ve compiled our list of Top Ten performances from Michael Fassbender. His latest role may prove to be his most stellar, even controversial one yet. Appearing in his second film directed by Steve McQueen, Shame has Fassbender portraying a sex addict. Shame is opening soon, with dates varying depending on your location.

Chicago – In many ways, “X-Men: First Class” is the most loyal film yet to the Marvel aesthetic in the way director Matthew Vaughn and the film’s multiple screenwriters capture the tone, spirit, and themes of one of the most legendary comic books of all time. It is a spectacular mix of great performances, well-choreographed action, and cleverly-revised history. It is crowd-pleasing to action fans and yet intellectually complex at the same time. It is what more producers of superhero movies should strive to accomplish and it deserves mention with the best of the genre (“Spider-Man 2,” “X-Men,” and even “The Dark Knight”).
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
What Vaughn has done with “X-Men: First Class” is not unlike what Christopher Nolan did with “Batman Begins” in that the director of the Christian Bale film was tasked with righting the ship after two awful films — debate the worse double feature in “Batman Forever...

The cast of director Matthew Vaughn‘s upcoming film, X-Men: First Class seems to be adding new additions to the cast all the time. Back in July we brought you a report that Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) had joined the cast to play young Mystique.
Now it seems that the film will take us farther into Mystique’s past… or will it? According to Xmf, 10-year-old actress Morgan Lily (2012, Flipped) has been cast as an even younger version of the character but, Deadline reports that Lily will instead be playing the Young Raven. I guess we will find out which character Lily really plays in the film when we get something from “Official” channels.
Deadline also reports that January Jones (Mad Men) has been signed to play the role of Emma Frost, a role previously rumored to go to Alice Eve (She’s Out of my League), Zoë Kravitz...

"X-Men: First Class" is gathering a hefty ensemble of mutants and villains. There have been so many casting rumors and announcements that it's become difficult to keep track of everything, and director Matthew Vaughn even had to reassure us that the flick wouldn't get too crowded with characters.
"In terms of having a lot of mutants, it doesn't feel that busy," he said. "I don't feel worried about it. I think it will be really cool to see all these guys doing their stuff."
Vaughn has already handled an ensemble of superheroes and villains in "Kick-Ass," so we trust him on this one. Still, there's a lot to remember. The latest casting developments arrived Tuesday, when word broke that a slew of actors had signed on to "First Class," including...

Directly before Yeti’s premiere on the Sci Fi Channel (ahead of its DVD release from Genius Products January 13), the network had a back-to-back airing of Ryan Schifrin’s Abominable and Tibor Takacs’ Ice Spiders. First, I got my Bigfoot fix, followed by my monsters at a ski resort. By the time they wrapped up, I was primed to enter Yeti territory. Personally, I couldn’t think of a better introduction to this gleefully over-the-top little flick than prefacing it with those two equally hammy gems.
In Yeti, we’ve got an American college football team headed to Japan aboard their private jet, which just happens to give out over the Himalayas (apparently they got a discount by flying all the way around the entire world, rather than just over the Pacific). Huddled together in the blistering cold, the surviving kids find themselves stalked by the legendary Yeti, an enormous...

Three of the most promising British horror directors have joined forces for an anthology feature which wraps principal photography this week. Pat (Killerkiller) Higgins, James (The Witches Hammer) Eaves and Alan (Jesus Vs. The Messiah) Ronald have pooled their talents for Bordello Death Tales, which aims to revive the British omnibus subgenre that flourished in the 1970s, and provided the exclusive pics seen below.
“Pat and I had been talking about doing a multistory horror project for a while, and came up with the idea of setting it in a brothel,” Eaves tells Fango. “We needed a third director, and Pat suggested Al, who’d worked with him on all of his films. What started as an idea in a pub has blossomed into a full-fledged feature with what I believe are three strong and original tales.”
“It actually fell into place quite easily,” adds Higgins, whose latest feature Hellbride...
