In the midst of a slew of tour dates, grunge rock outfit Dogstar — which features Keanu Reeves as their bassist — stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night in support of their first album in two decades, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees.
Dressed in quintessential all-black attire, the band performed their recent single, “Breach,” which features a “nasty bass solo” from Reeves himself. Watch the full replay below.
The appearance marked Dogstar’s first TV outing since Jay Leno’s Tonight Show in July 2000. Formed in 1994, the band debuted with Reeves playing bass, Bret Domrose as the guitarist/vocalist, and Rob Mailhouse on drums. The trio released two albums, 1996’s Our Little Visionary and 2000’s Happy Ending, before calling it quits in 2002.
After reuniting last summer, Dogstar made their live comeback in May at the BottleRock festival. Get tickets for their upcoming shows here.

Dogstar, the rekindled rock trio featuring actor-bassist Keanu Reeves, are back with their first album in over 20 years, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
The 12-track LP marks the band’s first full-length since 2000’s Happy Ending, and solidifies the recent reunion between Reeves, guitarist-vocalist Bret Domrose, and drummer Rob Mailhouse that kicked off in May with a performance at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Festival. The appearance hosted the live debuts of nearly every song from the new collection, and the group affirmed in a statement that the concert experience has been a major driving force for them, saying, “When creating this record, we were so excited about the idea of playing it live.”

It was bound to happen. As part of the promotional campaign for the new “Saw X,” due out Sept. 29, Lionsgate has released a parody video of the Nicole Kidman AMC Theatres commercial, featuring the little Jigsaw doll (and his tricycle) in place of Kidman and her sparkly suit. Watch it above.
The video sees Jigsaw riding up to Lionsgate, saying stuff like, “We come to theaters to scream, to beg, to play. That indescribable feeling you get when the lights flicker on and off and your calls for mercy go unanswered.”
Also: “Blood soaked blades on a silver screen. Fear I can feel. Somehow, self-amputation feels good in a place like this.”
It ends with a title card reading, “Traps – They Make Movies Better.”
The Nicole Kidman AMC Theatres ad, which began running in September 2021, was meant to be a way to bolster attendance after the Covid-19 pandemic had threatened the entire industry.

Dogstar have been trying to make a go of their sleek, post-grunge alt-rock for decades, but bassist Keanu Reeves’ and drummer Robert Mailhouse’s pesky day jobs as actors keep getting in the way. Now they have planned a third album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, due out Oct. 6, and a sleek new video for the song “Breach.”

Dogstar, the recently-revived rock trio featuring the sweet bass stylings of one Keanu Reeves, are gearing up for the release of their first album in over over 20 years, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees. Before it’s out, they’ve shared another single from it called “Breach.”
Earlier this week, Dogstar teased “Breach” on Instagram, notifying fans that it “features a nasty bass solo by Kr,” and some lucky folks got to hear that for themselves live when the band performed it during an intimate gig at The Roxy last month.
Reeves isn’t exactly known for making himself the center of attention — not on purpose, at least — so don’t go into “Breach” expecting Flea-like levels of bass slappin’ or anything. Still, it’s heartwarming to see the guy shred through some brief runs. Elsewhere, the track is a pretty solid garage rock tune, and you can...

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

MSNBC’s Brian Williams was in a playful mood on Thursday night following House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s meeting with Donald Trump.
Earlier that day, McCarthy was pictured at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., where the two reportedly reconciled and discussed a strategy for Republicans to regain a majority in the 2022 midterm elections. Afterwards, McCarthy released a statement, which in part read: “Today, President Trump committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022. A united conservative movement will strengthen the bonds of our citizens and uphold the freedoms our country was founded on.

November turned out to be a huge month for the cable news networks, as all three major outlets touted ratings milestones with the boost from Election Day and its aftermath.
The question, of course, is whether these levels will be sustained once Joe Biden takes office with the implicit promise of a return to normal news cycles.
CNN saw the greatest growth in its primetime numbers, jumping by 180% from November, 2019, to 2.8 million total viewers, in what it said was its most watched month ever. The figures are from Nielsen and come from Fox News and CNN.
Fox News still led handily in primetime and was up a robust 41% with 3.94 million total viewers, in what the network said was its highest rated November ever. MSNBC also jumped, up 29% to 2.7 million viewers, in what the network also said was its highest rated month ever.

Fox News correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera has an idea for what to name the Covid-19 vaccine once it’s ready for distribution, and it’s after outgoing President Trump himself. However, that suggestion did not sit well with MSNBC chief anchor and “The 11th Hour” host Brian Williams on Friday, who in response skewered the correspondent’s remarks with a sleight of visual irony. Watch below.
Juxtaposed against images of President Trump golfing and not wearing a mask, among other things, Williams said solemnly, “It’s possible we just don’t give the president enough credit for his Fdr-like devotion to tackling this virus. His laser-like focus, his daily devotion, the sympathy he’s forever expressing to the families of the quarter million dead. Even the way the president lectures us in that way to please wear a mask and stop the spread. And he’s always advocated injections. Geraldo may be on to something.

NBCUniversal tried to harness two Fox News anchors in the recent past and failed. Now the company no doubt hopes the third time’s the charm.
The company’s CNBC on Wednesday evening launched former Fox News daytime anchor Shepard Smith in a new 7 p.m. news hour that, as Smith himself described it, aims to give viewers “journalists and experts, not opinions and pundits.” The business-news network clearly has some ambition for the new program. It hired a well-known producer, Molly Kordares, from “CBS Evening News,” lured Sally Ramirez, a top news executive from a major-market CBS affiliate in Houston, and assigned one of its veterans, Sandy Cannold, to oversee the project.
Several Fox News personalities who have left that outlet have gained new recognition for their newsgathering or anchoring skills, including Major Garrett and Catherine Herridge at CBS News and Alisyn Camerota at CNN. But NBC News has...

It’s fair to say MSNBC had a “Hardball” problem. Perhaps it wasn’t just the one everyone was talking about.
Chris Matthews’ growing series of on-air gaffes in the midst of intensifying coverage of the 2020 campaign made keeping him on the air difficult for MSNBC executives, as did a litany of troubling stories about his behavior toward female guests on set and behind the scenes. Yet the show itself, based on a concept that worked in the late 1990s, was also becoming outdated.
Matthews had a long tenure as a top political insider, working as a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter and chief of staff for the very influential Tip O’Neill when he was the Speaker of the House. “Cosmic Sin” follows a group of warriors and scientists who must fight to protect and save their race when a hostile alien species with the power to infect and take over human hosts sets its sights on a futuristic human society.
“Saban Films has been partnering on films at earlier stages and this is a project we knew we wanted to be involved with from the beginning,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley, who negotiated the deal, with Large on behalf of the filmmakers.
The film is currently in pre-production, with The Exchange handling international rights in other territories. Stephen Eads is executive producing.

MSNBC executives may be working their way through a number of programming and schedule changes in months to come, but launching Shepard Smith in primetime probably isn’t one of them.
Despite a report in The Daily Beast suggesting that MSNBC honchos might want to consider the former Fox News anchor for one of its primetime perches, the prospect seems unlikely. One person familiar with Smith’s thinking suggests he’s never craved a role other than straight reporting, and another person with knowledge of the matter says such a move wouldn’t work for either the journalist or the network. Smith left Fox News in October after sparring on air with Tucker Carlson, one of the network’s primetime hosts.
A representative for Smith declined to comment. His non-compete agreement with Fox News is believed to expire six months from now, meaning he could be eligible to work for...

MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show drew its highest ever viewership on Wednesday when Maddow landed an exclusive interview with Lev Parnas, the former associate of Rudy Giuliani.
The network said that 4.5 million viewers watched, according to Nielsen Media Research. That beat Hannity, which had 3.7 million viewers and usually tops the time slot. MSNBC said that it also was more than triple the viewers for CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time.
MSNBC also said that Maddow’s interview had a spillover effect, as The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell and The 11th Hour with Brian Williams topped in total viewers.
In the interview, Parnas implicated President Donald Trump in a scheme to pressure the Ukrainian government into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Parnas and another associate, Igor Furman, worked for Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, as he pursued information on the Bidens.

The next step in Clint Eastwood’s late season crashing of the awards bubble: a buzzy world premiere at one of the last pre-Oscars fall film festivals. The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced that Eastwood’s fact-based drama “Richard Jewell” will celebrate its world premiere at AFI Fest this November in Los Angeles. The film, made in short order (as has become Eastwood’s signature), debuted its first trailer just last week, announcing its entry into an already-crowded awards season.
“Clint Eastwood is an American icon,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO in an official statement. “It is an honor for AFI to premiere this next chapter in his storied career — one that continues to enrich the nation’s cultural legacy with undeniable impact.” Eastwood himself will be on hand to introduce the new film, starring Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde,...

Following his iconic role as Knuckles McGinty in “nicecore” phenomenon “Paddington 2” (and proving he’s a fan of IndieWire), Brendan Gleeson will flex his acting range by portraying one of the worst individuals on the planet. Gleeson has been cast as sitting president Donald Trump in a CBS adaptation of James Comey’s bestselling book, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.” Jeff Daniels — hot off an acclaimed turn of his own in Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” — will play the author, attorney, and former FBI director.
Billy Ray, the writer-director behind “Shattered Glass,” “Breach,” and, most recently, the canceled Amazon drama “The Last Tycoon,” will write and direct the four-part limited series. The rest of the cast includes Michael Kelly as Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and Jennifer Ehle playing Patrice Comey.

Clint Eastwood is returning to the big screen this awards season with his latest biographical drama “Richard Jewell.” The movie is based on the true story of its title character, a security guard at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, who discovered three pipe bombs on the park grounds. Jewell, played in the film by rising actor and “I, Tonya” breakout Paul Walter Hauser, was initially hailed as a hero for saving lives, only for unreliable media coverage to turn him into a suspect and destroy his life.
Warner Bros.’ official synopsis for “Richard Jewell” reads: “The world is first introduced to Richard Jewell as the security guard who reports finding the device at the 1996 Atlanta bombing; his report making him a hero whose swift actions save countless lives. But within days, the law enforcement wannabe becomes the FBI’s number one suspect, vilified by press and public alike, his life ripped apart.

Chris Cooper celebrates his 68th birthday on July 9, 2019. The Oscar-winning actor has leant his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The just-released trailer for Andrew Slater’s Echo in the Canyon is intended to reverberate with the signature sounds of 1960s era Southern California but it also echoes with the memory of a later rock icon: Tom Petty, the late, great Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who gave his last filmed interview for the music documentary.
Echo in the Canyon, which opens May 24 at Arclight’s Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, puts a spotlight on the robust music scene centered in leafy Laurel Canyon in the 1960s, when the Byrds, the Beach Boys, the Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas & the Papas were thriving.
Petty, a devoted disciple of the Byrds legacy, speaks in admiring tones about the musical moment and the influence of the California Sound, as do Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Eric Clapton, Beck, Michelle Phillips, David Crosby, Cat Power, Lou Adler, Stephen Stills and others.

W.L. Goodwater blends spy noir with magical government agents in this clever twist on the Cold War espionage thriller.
The Berlin Wall's magic was supposed to last forever...
From Deutschland 86 to Atomic Blonde, the Cold War-era spy genre is enjoying a cultural resurgence, and W.L. Goodwater’s alternate history magical spy novel, Breach, is a delightfully supernatural addition.
“We seem to be inching back towards the Cold War,” Goodwater told Den of Geek at San Diego Comic Con. “I don't know how quickly fiction is following behind that. Certainly, when I started writing this, with my villains being Nazis and Communist Russia, I didn't realize that it was going to be so modern at the time. But I just think it's a time period that has always drawn people's imagination. The conflicts that come out of there have never really gone away.”

Most films are not Cloverfield movies, but when it comes to Paramount and Bad Robot productions from J.J. Abrams, the speculation runs rampant. That was certainly the case with Overlord, a new World War II supernatural thriller that had a quiet production and virtually nothing else revealed until the trailer, which has now arrived today ahead of a November release.
Back at CinemaCon, Abrams emphatically confirmed it was not a Cloverfield film, but rather a standalone feature from Julius Avery (Son of a Gun). Scripted by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), the cast includes Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, and Mathilde Ollivier. The first trailer sells a fun-looking, schlocky Medal of Honor-meets-Wolfenstein (or Saving Private Ryan-meets-The Thing, if we’re talking films) hybrid of WWII thrills and supernatural horror.
Check it out below.
Overlord opens on November 9, 2018.

After more than a year of fighting between samurais, knights, and vikings, “For Honor” players are finally getting a fresh batch of opponents.
The Wu Lin faction from ancient China is joining the fray this fall with the Marching Fire expansion. The four new hero classes — Jiang Jun, Tiandi, Shaolin, and Nuxia — increases the roster of warriors to 22, making it one of “For Honor’s” most substantial updates since its Feb. 2017 launch.
Marching Fire is a part of developer Ubisoft Montreal’s plan to create a deep, lasting experience for the competitive online brawler, which recently surpassed 8 million players. During an interview with Variety at E3 2018, creative director Roman Campos-Oriola explained that they try not to take that success for granted, especially after its initial growing pains. Among other problems, players complained of crippling connectivity issues and a painfully slow grind to unlock new characters.

Ryan Murphy isn’t touching the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton scandal after all.
The showrunner said he’s scrapping the proposed season of his FX anthology series “American Crime Story,” which would have followed the story that rocked the nation in the ’90s about a then-intern’s affair with the then-potus, according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday. The report came on the same day History decided to scrap the Clinton impeachment drama series “Breach.”
Jeffrey Toobin’s 2000 best-seller, “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal that Nearly Brought Down a President,” had been optioned as the source material for the season over a year ago. But Murphy decided against going through with his version of Lewinsky’s tale. And he said that to her face.

“I told her, ‘Nobody should tell your story but you, and it’s kind of gross if they do,'” Murphy told THR of discussing the matter with Lewinsky at a party in Hollywood. “‘If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer and you should make all the goddamn money.'”
Luckily, the “American Crime Story” team — which includes executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson — have at least one story locked in and ready to go. The upcoming third season, which centers on Hurricane Katrina, is currently in production and was originally slated for release ahead of the sophomore installment, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” but wasn’t ready in time.
Representatives for FX and 20th Century Fox declined to comment on Murphy’s decision to scrap the season when reached by TheWrap.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been reiterating the state of play on the planned Terminator 6. It’s pretty well known now that James Cameron, the writer/director of the first two films, is back involved in the new movie. He’s developing what’s planned as a trilogy of films, although given his commitments to directing four Avatar sequels, it’s...

Actor Caroline Dhavernas began her career in French-Canadian television, with roles that probably played big in Quebec but not many other places. After starring in some notworthy indie dramas like Edge Of Madness, however, she finally gained wider recognition on Bryan Fuller’s charming and addictive Wonderfalls, a short-lived delight of a series that almost no one saw when it was on but has found an afterlife as a cult hit. From there, she’s gone on to an impressive career, toggling comfortably between film and TV in projects like Hollywoodland, Breach, Off The Map, and most notably spending three seasons on NBC’s superlative Hannibal. We caught up with her at SXSW, where she was promoting her new indie Easy Living, about a self-destructive door-to-door makeup saleswoman. Also, her new Lifetime series, Mary Kills People, about an ER doctor who covertly moonlights as a Dr. Kevorkian type helping people...

Foregoing the emotion at the core of Juan José Campanella’s Oscar-winning drama The Secret in Their Eyes, Billy Ray’s cold procedural remake (titled Secret in Their Eyes, evidently taking advice from Justin Timberlake’s Sean Parker) walks the walk, transplanting the story to a post-9/11 Los Angeles from 1970’s Argentina. The motivations are somewhat different this time around. Instead of writing a novel, Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns to his old stomping grounds to pay a visit to the one that got away: both his work crush Claire (Nicole Kidman) and a murder suspect whom he thinks he’s located.
The murder in question occurs adjacent to a mosque under surveillance by the joint counter terrorism task force. This partnership between the local FBI field office, in 2002, is led by a prosecutor with political ambition named Morales (Alfred Molina). The women raped and murdered is Carolyn Cobb (Zoe Graham...

The Eyes Have It: Ray’s Unnecessary Remakes Pales Next to Source
Thanks to mainstream America’s huffy dismissal of subtitles when it comes to cinema, we continue with another unnecessary remake of a foreign film, Secret in Their Eyes, an English language, celebrity studded face-lift of Argentinean Juan Jose Campanella’s 2009 title (which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film that year). Screenwriter Billy Ray, after snagging his own Oscar nod in 2014 for penning Captain Philips, makes his third directorial effort here, following 2007’s Breach and 2003’s Shattered Glass. Reworking Campanella’s pulpy subtext into a post 9/11 Los Angeles neo noir, kudos to Ray for revisiting a particularly awkward moment within a provocative framework. But the result is a glossy, Hollywood reworking which never feels better than a subpar rehash of something much greater. To be fair, Campanella’s original has its own set of problems, with...

Secret in Their Eyes
Written and Directed by Billy Ray
Based on the film El Secreto de Sus Ojos by Juan Jose Campanella and Eduardo Sacheri
USA, 2015
Thrillers that contain no thrills aren’t exactly a rarity in Hollywood. It comes as no surprise, then, that Secret in Their Eyes fails to quicken a pulse. More surprising is its complete inability to establish tone, mood, or any sense of escalating tension. Everyone, including writer-director Billy Ray and leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor, does acceptable work, but there’s just no pop here. The bar was simply set too high with Campanella’s 2009 Oscar Winner, making this tepid remake feel both ill-advised and ill-conceived.
“Passion always wins,” is an ironic mantra for Secret in Their Eyes considering what a dispassionate film it truly is. Perhaps a more accurate theme would be, “The past determines the present.” Every character seems doomed to travel...
