Frog and Toad Together (1987) Poster

Hal Smith: Toad

Quotes

  • Toad : [after Frog feeds their cookies to the birds; sadly]  Ohhh, now we have no more cookies to eat, not even one.

Frog : Yes, but we have *lots* and *lots* of will power.

Toad : You may keep it all. I'm going home now to bake a cake.

  • Frog : [as he finishes tying string around the box of cookies]  There. Now we won't eat any more cookies.

Toad : [as Frog looks down at the box; matter-of-factly again]  But--we can cut the string and open the box.

Frog : [looking up again and thinking to himself]  That is true. Uh, I--I'll put the box up high on the shelf.

  • Frog : [after he puts the box of cookies on a high shelf using a ladder]  There. Now we won't eat any more cookies.

Toad : [matter-of-factly a third time]  But we can climb the ladder, and take the box down from the shelf, and cut the string, and open the box.

Frog : [sighing softly]  That is true.

  • Frog : [as he finishes storing the leftover cookies in a box]  There. Now we won't eat any more cookies.

Toad : [matter-of-factly]  But--we can open the box.

Frog : [looking down at the box]  That is true. Uh, I'll tie some string around the box.

  • Toad : [as he walks on the high wire]  Frog, can you do tricks like this?

Frog : [continuing to shrink]  No.

  • Toad : [as he plays the piano]  Frog, can you play the piano like this?

Frog : [as he starts to shrink]  No.

  • Strange Theater Emcee : [as Toad comes back onstage]  The Greatest Toad will now...

Toad : [screams]  Shut up! Frog? Frog! Where've you gone?

[as the curtain falls and the theater starts to darken]

Toad : Come back, Frog! I'll be lonely! Come baaack!

[he starts spinning in the dark, falling back into bed]

Toad : Ohh, I'll be lonely, Frog, come baaack!

[now we see Toad squirming in bed]

Toad : Frog, where are you?

  • Toad : [after he finishes his dancing act]  Frog, can you be as wonderful as this?

Frog : [shrinking one last time]  No.

    [vanishes]

Toad : [as we hear unseen audience members talking indistinctly]  Frog, where are you?

    [no answer from Frog]

Toad : Frog, what have I *done*?

  • Frog : [approaching Toad's bed, suspecting he had a bad dream; last lines]  I'm right here; wake up, Toad.

Toad : [as he stops squirming and panicking in his nightmare and suddenly sits up to see Frog]  Frog, is that really you?

Frog : Well of course it's me.

Toad : [getting out of bed]  And are you your own right size?

Frog : Yes, I think so.

Toad : Frog, I'm so glad that you came over.

    Frog : I always do.

  • Toad : Frog, Frog, taste these cookies that I have made.

Frog : Mmm, these are the best cookies I've ever eaten!

  • Toad : [as he takes his baked cookies out of the oven; he sniffs]  Ooh ahh, these cookies smell very good!

[he eats one cookie, then hums briefly]

Toad : And they taste even better! Mm, what a cook I am!

    [squeaks briefly]

Toad : I think I'll share these cookies with Frog.

  • Frog : [after he and Toad eat several of Toad's cookies]  You know, Toad, I think we should stop eating. We will soon be sick.

Toad : You're right. Uh, oh, let us eat one last cookie--then we will stop.

  • Toad : [seeing more cookies left after he and Frog eat one last cookie]  Frog, let us eat one *very* last cookie, and--then we will stop.

  • Toad : [as he and Frog continue eating cookies even after they promise themselves to stop eating them]  Mmm, we must stop eating!

Frog : Yes. We need will power.

Toad : You--what is will power?

Frog : Will power is trying hard *not* to do something that you really want to do.

Toad : You mean like trying *not* to eat all of these cookies?

Frog : Right. I'll put the cookies in a box.
