A rare movie appearance by the brilliant Gwen Sampe
joemcc-114 October 2005
Gwen Sampe appears all too briefly in this strangely engaging movie. She is a brilliant musician and it would be great to see and hear her in other movies.

Centering on a highly original take on same sex relationships, this is a flawed but subtly subversive film. It could have benefited from far more development and elaboration and has an unfinished feeling.

The most singly frustrating aspect of the movie is the under-use of a world class musician. Sampe is an artist of the highest integrity, who currently lives and performs in Paris. The fact that she is not world-famous is because all of her work is fearlessly uncompromising and has never sold out to facile commercialism.

"My Wife" should be treasured for framing an all too brief glimpse of the incomparable Sampe at work.

Gwen Sampe is the best thing about this and many other things.

Agree completely. Sampe - to my knowledge - has not made other movies. I saw her recently performing at the 7 Lezards night club in Paris. She was sensational. One of the rare artists with the integrity not to make compromises. Oh for a film - short or long - featuring her art. Sampe is comparable to all the jazz legends. We see so few of our contemporary jazz leaders on film these days especially if their music is not easy listening. Sampe is a very exciting artist ... a Black American 'exiled in Paris' and shamefully ignored by the mainstream music industry. Her arrangements and reconstructions of jazz and blues standards should be reaching far wider audiences. Let's hope that the next film she appears in does more justice to this underexposed artist.
