French actor and director Guillaume Canet has revealed he is feeling the pressure ahead of the release next week of his ambitious 70M production Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.
Canet directs and stars in the film as iconic plucky Gaul Asterix in an all-star ensemble cast also featuring Gilles Lellouche as Obelix, Vincent Cassel as Julius Caesar, Marion Cotillard as Cleopatra and Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimović as Caesar’s bodyguard Antivirus.
The production is Canet’s eighth feature after 2006 breakout Tell No One, 2010 hit Little White Lies, Brooklyn-set, English-language debut Blood Ties and the smaller more personal pandemic-shot film Lui.
Long-time collaborator Alain Attal at Trésor Films produces with Pathé and Yohan Baiada at Les Enfants Terribles.
Pathé will launch Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom on 1,200 screens on February 1. Local media is hailing the release as the biggest film event of early 2023.

You might be a Marvel fan, but are you enough of a fan to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home” nearly 300 times? That’s what MCU diehard Ramiro Alanis did to set a Guinness world record for the most in-theater viewings of the same film.
Alanis had previously set the record in 2019 by watching “Avengers: Endgame” in theaters 191 times, but had his record broken last year by Arnaud Klein, a superfan of the French fantasy series “Kaamelott” who watched the show’s film adaptation “Kaamelott: The First Chapter” 204 times.
To take back the record, Alanis bought multiple tickets to screenings of “No Way Home” starting on opening night on Dec. 16. To count each viewing towards the record total, Alanis couldn’t participate in any other activity during the screening or even leave for a bathroom break until the credits finished rolling and had to provide a ticket stub and written statement...

French film exports generated 91.4M euros ($103.6M) in 2021, a 5.5% increase on the previous year’s provisional figures, while admissions were up 8% to 14.8M. Comparatively, French films within France sold 39.2M tickets during the year. The figures were announced during the annual Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema which is taking place in Paris this week — one of the rare international gatherings in the current landscape that’s being held as a physical event.
Today’s numbers are provisional estimates and will be higher when they are trued up in the fall. For example, when originally announced in January 2021, the 2020 receipts were 86.6M euros, ultimately jumping to 101.7M euros when recalculated in November; a decline of over 60% versus 2019.
Interestingly, China in 2021 overtook Russia to become the leading overseas market for French titles in terms of admissions, partly owing to the fact that its cinemas recovered more quickly from Covid than elsewhere. Over...

The French box office, hampered by an increasingly rigorous series of Covid health protocols, took a plunge in recent months, resulting in week-to-week falls of up to 41%. But for all their caveats, industry analysts talk about the current landscape in tones of cautious optimism.
In France, a growing number of commercial spaces are prohibited from those without proof of double anti-covid vaccinations.
“The sanitary passport had a pronounced effect in depressing the market,” says Comscore France’s Eric Marti. “There was a lot of uncertainty this summer, and we saw that once there’s a hint of confusion, the impact is immediate.” But at the same time, those same local audiences disproved the most pessimistic prognoses that came from during the lockdowns. “Viewers have displayed a real willingness” to return to the theaters, Marti says. “Remarkably, the market was able to absorb the [escalating restrictions], and, despite them, to pick back up.

French movie theaters, which reopened their doors mid-May after a six-month shutdown, have seen admissions fall by 41% over the last week (Aug. 11-18), according to the national exhibitors guild (Fncf).
Most exhibitors and distributors are blaming the steep decline in moviegoing on a Covid health pass that came into effect on Aug. 9 and requires every patron to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination or a negative Pcr test in order to access cinemas and other cultural venues, as well as restaurants, bars and other public venues.
Admissions were down 34% the week of Aug. 4 and fell by 41% the following week, explained Stephane Landfried of the Fncf.
“That’s significant because we can see the impact of the health pass law which came into effect, and every single cinema, from multiplexes to arthouse theaters, now have to apply it, whereas previously only the big chains such as Gaumont-Pathe, Ugc and Cgr were obligated to enforce it,...

Update, writethru: In its global launch, Disney’s Jungle Cruise grossed $61.8M at worldwide turnstiles this weekend. That does not include the “over $30M” that came from Disney+ in the day-and-date streaming release (which leads to a $91.8M worldwide start as Anthony has reported). In pure theatrical terms, the Dwayne Johnson/Emily Blunt-starrer performed ahead of expectations domestically, and came in vastly lower at the international box office compared to pre-weekend estimates.
While the $27.6M international start for Jungle Cruise in 47 material markets is well below the $40M projected debut, even rivals today agree the film is facing several issues which include a changing overseas Covid landscape as well as strong local titles in some areas.
France, for example, is still getting used to the required health pass (or negative Covid test) to gain entry to cinemas. Jungle Cruise ended up No. 2 there (behind local adventure comedy Kaamelott) with $1.7M.

Box office has fallen by 50-70% following the introduction of mandatory Covid passport for cinema attendance on July 21.
French distributors and exhibitors were looking forward to some sort of recovery this summer after 200 days of cinema closures from October 2020 to May 2021 due to a second Covid-19 lockdown. But hopes of a post-Cannes box office bounce have been dashed following the French government’s decision to introduce a ‘health pass’ to enter cinemas on July 21.

“Pil’s Adventures” is a CGI animated feature produced by Tat Productions, the well-established French banner behind “The Jungle Bunch” and “Terra Willy.” Now in production, the film was pitched at Cartoon Movie and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2021. In the absence of a physical market, Snd will introduce “Pil’s Adventures” to buyers this month with the script, a 10-minute clip of first footage and a print presentation of all the characters, backdrops and production.

CANNES -- French producer CALT, which has made a specialty of short-format comedy shows, is touting its latest hit Kaamelott at MIPTV, with ambitious plans for 700 television episodes, two specials and a trilogy of theatrical movies for the property. Headed by Jean-Yves Robin, CALT hit big with Camera Cafe, another short-format show that captured the conversations and confidences of a bunch of office workers filmed from the point of view of a coffee machine. The show ran to 700 episodes on Gallic commercial channel M6, sold to 25 countries, shifted 2 million videos and was recently spun off into a movie, Espace detente, which garnered nearly 2 million admissions in France this year.
