- Silver Phil, a small dark man with a bad name, haunts about town, but bumps into no trouble till he tries to cheat Cherokee Hall's faro game. Nell's quick eye spots him and Cherokee does some slick knife-work, which scares Phil but enables him to escape with his hide whole. Phil is sullen and resentful and promises to return. Cherokee promises to handle him when he does. Phil journeys to Red Dog where he gets in with others of his kind in various successful hold-ups. Inflamed with success and bad liquor, he remembers Wolfville and starts out to pay his debt. But he runs into the pursuing marshal with a posse and is captured after a running fight. He escapes by killing his two guards and leaping from a porch roof onto a horse. On to Wolfville he gallops, with Nell and Cherokee blissfully ignorant of the danger which threatens them. He reaches the town and forces his horse through the door of the saloon, firing from the saddle Cherokee's knife spoils his aim and Phil flees. But Cherokee is after him. He catches him after a chase, wrenches him from the saddle, whirls him about his head and dashes him with terrific force to the ground. And when asked by Nell if he killed Silver Phil, he shakes his head, saying he merely dismissed him, but the cards fell the same way.—Copyright Description from Library of Congress
