Bird People is a series of misconnections. After a blissful prologue paying homage to Wings of Desire, Pascale Ferran’s fourth feature listlessly morphs into a bizarre confluence of realism and magicalism. The film is a textbook example of ambition undercut by tonal and pacing inconsistency. Divided into two chapters, Bird People leads with Gary (Josh Charles), a Bay Area businessman ready to “leave everything behind,” as he proclaims. Ridden with anxiety, Gary knows he needs to leave his position at his growing Tech Company, his wife (after 18 years of courtship), his kids, and his current way of life. From one airport hotel to the next, he seems unable to experience joy or happiness. This heightened mid-life crisis serves as a jarring juxtaposition between Audrey (Anais Demoustier), a Parisian chambermaid and college student whose future is still ahead of her. She too is dissatisfied with her place of work, a Hilton Hotel where Gary is hiding out...

Tom Petty received the Founders Award Wednesday night from performing rights organization Ascap for the contributions he’s made to songwriting, but when Petty talked with HitFix, he was much more interested in talking about his songs to come rather than the ones in his past, especially the tunes on his forthcoming album, “Hypnotic Eye,” tentatively scheduled for release this summer. I asked the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer what made him decide to make a rock record again, one that heralds back to his ‘70s work. “I just kind of go where the wind blows me musically,” he said. “I think it’s a very special record and it’s certainly rock and roll, it’s very electric. No ballads, it’s a rocker." He joked that he only realized that he had enough songs for an album about two weeks ago, but in reality, he and the...

Cougar Town Season 5, Episode 6 “Learning to Fly”
Written by Michael Lisbe & Nate Reger
Directed by John Putch
Airs Tuesday nights at 10pm Et on TBS
Underneath the many gimmicks, recurring gags, and generic sitcom tropes of “Learning to Fly”, there are some interesting stories to be told: both Jules’ fear of things going too well in her life and the entirety of the Bobby/Travis plot are terrific avenues for character exploration. However, only the latter of these two really culminates in anything interesting – and being that it’s delegated to B/C plot territory for most of the episode, there’s only so much it can do to enhance what’s around it.
There’s certainly interesting ideas to parse out of the episode’s material (that is, save for the petty, predictable Ellie/Andy stuff), most of it symbolic: the death of Big Tippi isn’t really effective...

I've been slipping a bit this week with my pledge to see as many classic rock shows as I can this summer (sorry Ringo, Chicago, Santana and Steve Winwood), distracted by more contemporary acts like the Flaming Lips and Band of Horses.
But I got back in the saddle Thursday night (July 15) with a band that has never let me down before: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Here's the thing about Petty: The dude is in no hurry. He doesn't chase trends, doesn't pack the stage with unnecessary gadgets to distract you from the music and doesn't move around all that much anymore. But you know what he and the Heartbreakers do?
They play rock and roll.
A quaint idea, I know. A few years ago, I saw them at the United Center in Chicago and I walked away thinking, "Man, that band has nothing but hits!" Petty and company...

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, the James Patterson book property is now close to being snapped up by Universal. Catherine Hardwicke remains attached to direct with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Steven Paul producing. Along with the change in studio the project will also be home to a new script by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Cowboys and Aliens).
The five-volume series by James Patterson chronicles six teens, known as the Flock, who are genetically altered so that they are part human and part bird. Learning to fly, they escape the laboratory where they have been housed and are pursued by a pack of creatures called the Erasers that are part human and part wolf.

File this under Who Knew? Before David Beckham, there was Corey Haim. Among the more eyebrow-raising revelations that have emerged in the wake of the '80s heartthrob's unexpected death is word that the erstwhile Lost Boy once romanced a certain Spice Girl. A vintage kiss-and-tell interview with Haim has popped up online, and he doesn't hold back in the details of their dating life. The relationship—which Victoria Beckham confirmed in her autobiography, Learning to Fly—took place in 1995, before her Girl Power heyday. The couple met at a London recording studio, when, per Haim, the two locked "sniper eyes"—the rest, as they say, is history. "I had to hang...
