Adapting short films into features is nothing new, but lately it's seeming more and more common for a short to be produced intentionally as a kind of practice run for a later long-form version. Filmmaker Will Canon may not have completely planned for his award-winning Nyu film, "Roslyn," to serve as the opening to an extended story, but he does admit to originally having had more ideas he couldn't fit into only eight minutes. So, after making a few more shorts over the last decade, he delivered "Brotherhood," which is not only nearly ten times longer; it's also ten times…...

For the third and final screening of "Brotherhood" at SXSW last year, the young woman who had gotten in line two-and-a-half hours ahead of time confided in me that she had actually attended the previous two screenings and needed to see it again. Her reasoning that she might not ever see it again was understandable, given the crapshoot of indie film distribution and because "Brotherhood" isn't exactly for those with a weak stomach. However, the film would also be a rare thing to behold, even if it weren't for limited screenings since director Will Canon's first feature is the kind of ridiculously fun, down and dirty thriller that few filmmakers are willing to stretch the limits of credibility or good taste to make or are skilled enough to pull off as energetically or confidently as this straightforward nailbiter about a fraternity hazing ritual that spirals out of control.

“Brotherhood” is like “Very Bad Things” for the college set — a lot of nasty people doing a lot of nasty things. Taking place at an unnamed college in an unnamed town in an unnamed state, the taut, tight thriller hits the ground running and never looks back as a frat prank for initiates goes horrifically wrong. Things spiral quickly and hopelessly out of control as the brothers make panicked decisions that spawn life-changing consequences. Things move so fast you hardly have time to get your head around some of the horrors before you’re socked with a humdinger of an ending.
Will Canon’s directorial debut, based on his short “Roslyn,” mostly works despite zero character development and the...

From National Lampoon’s Animal House to Sorority Row fraternity and sorority houses have been the setting for countless movies. These American University organisations have inspired many filmmakers to explore the world of initiation rituals, house rivalries, secret societies and general debauchery that exists within the walls of the Greek letter organisations.
The latest film to join the ranks is the debut feature from Will Canon, Brotherhood, released on DVD today. Written by Canon and Doug Simon, the film is an adaption of Canon’s own short film ‘Roslyn’ following the events of a disastrous night of fraternity pranks gone wrong.
Adam Buckley, played by Trevor Morgan (probably best known as the kid from ‘Jurassic Park III’), is a young student looking to join the Sigma Zeta Chi college fraternity. Before he can be accepted, Adam and the other pledges must each undergo an initiation which involves them, in turn,...

Rising indie distributor Phase 4 Films, in Cannes for the second time, has scooped up North American rights from the Cannes Film Market to SXSW audience-award-winner Brotherhood. Berry Meyerowitz, president & CEO of the year-old distrib, plans a late 2010 release for rookie director Will Canon's college fraternity hazing thriller starring Jon Foster, Trevor Morgan, Arlen Escarpeta, and Lou Taylor Pucci. The film is based on Canon's Nyu film school short Roslyn, which aired on HBO, Showtime and the Sundance Channel. Canon participated in the new Directors Lab at Fox Searchlight. Toronto-based Meyerowitz and his La-based acquisitions chief Larry Greenberg are combing Cannes for "commercial films with a targeted audience," says Meyerowitz, who thinks a niche sell is one way to break through market clutter. Foreign sales company Cinema Management Group has acquired all rights outside America for Will Canon’s college thriller Brotherhood, which premiered at SXSW Saturday night. The film began ten years ago as Canon's Nyu short film Roslyn. He co-wrote Brotherhood, about a frat initiation ritual gone wrong, with Doug Simon. Chris Pollack, Jason Croft, Steven Hein and Tim O’Hair produced with executive producers Jamie Patricof, Kevin Iwashina, Darryn Welch and Chris Ouwinga. Cmg acquired two titles at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: The Perfect Host, and Josh Fox’s doc Gasland, which won the doc Special Jury Prize.
