shame about the ending which ruined the movie for me
movieman_kev11 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew and Bob are two GPS hunters who have recently accepted a hunt from the enigmatic fugitive Shephed Loman who's allegedly in possession of two million dollars and before you know it they're deep in the woods (with some friends in tow) in the game. But when the first clue they find is a series of Polaroids of a bound & gagged woman with the words 'don't let me die' as well as coordinates to the next clue, they get an inkling that this 'hunt' will be a bit different.

The film starts off well enough. The acting while far from stellar, was perfectly adequate. I found myself interested in the storyline and the film kept my attention. But an ending that comes out of left field and is in one word: Idiotic, coupled with a really stupid coda sadly soured the entire movie for me.

Eye Candy: An extremely fleeting and obscured glimpse of Lauren Nuebling topless & some side boob action from Nicola Anderson Eye Candy for the ladies: Paul Proios bares his ass

My Grade: D+

DVD Extras: Commentary by Director/writer Eric Colley & Producer/writer/actress Hallie Shephard; a 30 minute Making-of; 30 minute 'characters of' featurette; stunts featurette (19 minutes); a short 3 minute Anatomy of a scene; post-production (18 & a half min); Bob's 8 and a half min homemade documentary; a making-of "mistaken" (Colley's previous short film) featurette; a segment on the GPS internet game & a code for said game (speaking of there's another code at the tail-end of the film's credits)

Uneven slasher effort without a lot going for it
kannibalcorpsegrinder11 March 2013
After agreeing to participate in a GPS-based treasure-hunt, a group of friends out in the woods find themselves targeted by a vicious killer with a personal vendetta against one of the members of the group, forcing them to find a way of stopping them before they succumb to his murderous antics.

This was a decidedly unspectacular slasher, without a whole lot to really get worked up over here, with the worst part being that there's not a whole lot of opportunity to really ratchet up the excitement level due to the way it presents itself. With the majority of the first hour taken up by the group's feelings with each other, the game-play and dealing with being out in the woods with something creepy lurking around the fringes of everything without doing anything about it, the film is just barely watchable during this half since we get very little indication we're watching a slasher, and it's pretty boring before it switches over in the last act with some decent stalking, a few decidedly-fun kills and the payoff to the half-hearted build-up being fine if drawn-out somewhat, but overall this one just isn't all that great.

Rated R: Graphic Language, Violence and Nudity.

Somewhere in Gig Harbor, Washington a septic tank overflowed and this is what came out
em8907200226 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is much more than just another bad 'teen-in-the-woods' cliché-ridden horror flick. This rubbish is absolutely miserable to watch, and everyone involved should be embarrassed for being part of this lame production.

The premise of going on a scavenger hunt using GPS devices where the hunters become the hunted is weak. For a thriller/horror flick there's no the sense of fear or apprehension; even the characters involved don't seem concerned that they're going to die.

When initially faced with danger they trivialize it and withhold information from each other. One character standing guard at night doesn't bother screaming to alert the others while he is being chased down and killed, and another character after running for her life poses in the doorway for the killer to come up behind her. And, the final scene where the killer scurries up the stairs to get the chick in the bathtub while the guy is distracted by answering the doorbell, please! You can see these plot turns way ahead of time.

These characters repeatedly do dumb things and talk like idiots. To explain everything to the viewers who've lost interest the crazy chick and the remaining survivors engage in an inane conversation toward the end; it's pathetic. I've seen puppets with people's hands up their butts give more convincing performances.

The dialogue, direction and acting are all very bad, but the music was especially nasty. Someone involved with this production must have been sleeping with the band, or vice versa.

Obviously I'm not one of the family or friends that wrote the ridiculously over-hyped reviews that falsely praise this flick as worthy of watching.

It's horrible; avoid it!

Wasted opportunity
krigler22 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I love no-budget thrillers and applaud every young filmmaker who opts for the genre route, resisting the too easy art-house choice. Indie thrillers sometime make such gems as The Following, Brick, Primer or to some extent Fermat's Room. In some cases, though, independent genre films turn out to be complete turd, like GPS.

What enrages me in this case is the fact that the makers of this film have obviously talent. Photography is excellent, also the editing is inspired. Music is also good, but it's used way too much, and becomes amateurish after a while. Acting is more miss than hit - I give more credit to the actors and chalk it up for the inept directing and rubbish screenplay. The director obviously has talent too in staging action, blocking the scenes, choreographing but he apparently knows zilch about instructing actors. And he should definitely stay away from trying to write a screenplay.

Putting so much talent and apparently a good deal of money into such a turgid story is a waste on so many levels that it frustrates me as a viewer. The screenplay completely lacks originality and gets stupider from scene to scene until such a ridiculously convoluted climax that it is mind-boggling. Every bad C-category slasher/thriller cliché is present from the masked stalker (really.... it is so tired it cannot be less menacing) to the characters becoming suspicious of each other, to the worst offence of all: the talking killer in the end, who explains everything at length while holding the other characters at gunpoint. And the resolution... let's just say it puts the most far-fetched soap operas to shame with its utterly non-sensical, melodramatic "reveal". What's worse, it's played completely straight, without a hint of irony (even with irony it would be lame, without it it's an embarrassment to everyone who has been connected to this fateful production).

Owing to the zero characterization and completely predictable, silly plotting, there is little to hang on to for a viewer, thus any unfolding events generate less suspense than a shrug or a disbelieving groan. It's a pity, because the GPS gimmick sounded original, and there is even a neat visual - though seemingly dated - trickery tracking the protags' route in the woods.

Let's hope these obviously talented filmmakers find a job working on others' films. Or find a good screenwriter asap. The world needs great indie genre films, but not uninspired knockoffs of already bad B-movies.

I enjoy a good movie now and then... but 'good' this ain't.
doomer-927 January 2009
I normally refer to user write-ups and use them to assist me in choosing a fun film to watch. Sometimes the reviews are spot-on, and sometimes it almost seems like someone has coerced their friends to write up a bunch of misleading and plain false reviews to artificially inflate the films review score. I think this may have been done here. If that is not that case, then this is one Ed Wood fan that has found a film that he is just too picky for...

Daniel Magill's character, Andrew, while seeming somewhat whiny stands above the rest of the cast that come across as amateur actors putting together a college film during a long weekend. I am sure they will improve upon their craft as they garner experience, and I wish them all the luck. However, it's painfully obvious here that they have a long way to go.

This is one of those movies that reminds you of the worst of the "Scream" series of movies, just without the polish. If you go by the some of these other "reviews" here, you will be misled. This movie is an absolute turkey. Reader beware!

Are you kidding me?!?!
rskeesey27 January 2009
OK, so this is my first movie review on IMDb. But I felt inclined to go through the time and effort of starting an account to write this review. If for nothing else than simply to warn you of the mistake that I made over the last 98 minutes in the hopes that you will learn from my experience. You see, I actually like to look for the silver lining on everything in life. There was no silver lining here. Or perhaps, on second thought, maybe there was... This was indeed a very suspenseful film. However, this suspense was not created by the acting, which was no doubt some of the worst I've ever seen. Nor was the suspense on account of the story. Weak, predictable, and absolutely terrible. Was it the writing???... Well let's just say the dialogue in the film reminded me of something that would have come from the worst of writers in a high school creative writing course who didn't want to be there, but was simply going through the motions to fill a couple credits.

So, back on track here... The only reason I didn't turn this movie off halfway through? I was in total suspense, edge of my seat suspense really! I could not wait! I was dying to see how bad a movie could actually get, and I was not left disappointed. This movies creators did one of the finest jobs ever of creating one of the worst written, worst acted, and poorly executed movies and endings ever!! Job well done on a ridiculous waste of time and money!!!

Something new for me
sarahabrami3 April 2008
This movie kept me on the edge of my chair. The video quality gave it a feeling of reality which added to the suspense. The chemistry between the characters drew you into their history together from the beginning. This continued throughout the movie aside from one scene. The setting was beautiful. It was not the kind of movie I would normally see, but overall, the music was placed well with the drama, the dialog rarely faltered, and the stunts were well done. I have not seen a lot of independent films, so I'm not certain if the unique qualities of this movie are similar to other independents. It challenged my expectations of what a movie "has to be," and gave me something new.

Good for the Budget - Fun Thriller with Cool Bonus Features
ardentayu1 May 2009
I saw this on DVD, which means I got to see the Behind the Scenes Bonus Features that go in depth into the making of this movie. There are more than 2 hours of special features.I didn't intend to watch them all, but they pulled me in so much I ended up watching most of them. After seeing those, I have a real appreciation of what the filmmakers went through to get their first feature made on a tiny budget, so I give them a '7.'

The movie itself is really fun, but it's not flawless. It had me laughing out loud at a couple of the funny characters, and there were some very suspenseful scenes in the second half of the movie. I think the biggest problem is that the suspense doesn't really start up until halfway through. The first half almost plays like a comedy, the second half like a thriller. If you know that going in, you can like it anyway. But it is a little disconcerting to the viewer as the tone changes dramatically at the midway point.

I'm glad they embellished GPS treasure hunting (or geocaching) to make it highly competitive, otherwise it wouldn't have been exciting. People are literally racing each other to get to the next hidden cache. There are some beautiful locations and some cool stunts. Overall, a really good first effort, and from what the director, producer, etc. said in the bonus features, it's obvious they learned a lot in the process to take with them to their next movie.

Saw this at the Tacoma Film Festival
cgariando15 October 2007
I don't know a lot about "GPS hunts" or "Geocaching" or whatever it is called, but you don't need any experience with activity as the filmmakers introduce you to it in the opening scenes of the film. The story and dialog were top notch. The excitement builds throughout the movie to the conclusion that catches you off guard.

I Was impressed with the quality of the production. It has a great story that reminded me of "The Contract" with John Cusack and Morgan Freeman with a some of the Blair Witch's frenetic quality thrown it. Scenes in the dark woods make you feel the suspense and fear the characters are experiencing. There are moments of levity that fit the characters and situations and brought real laughs from the audience.

A silly but fun thriller
rolbyh200222 November 2021
An indie horror/thriller that uses the concept of treasure hunting with GPS units. The premise is interesting: Instead of the expected money, the hiking group finds a buried coffin with scary Polaroid photos and plea for help. It's who-dunnit movie that's more silly than LOL funny, but the light-heartedness makes it fun. Except for one scene, it's pretty mild violence and not very slasher-esque even though the setup feels like maybe it should have been a slasher film.

Best Indie of the YEAR!
VinceRocca26 July 2008
In my line of work I see a lot of movies, and I see way too many Indies. Most I can't finish. GPS, thankfully wasn't one of them. This movie breaks the mold and strives to be more. It is what a true Indie should be. It's filled with many wide open beautiful landscapes, lots of interesting and good looking faces, and a compelling hook that keeps you invested to the very end. In addition to helicopter shots and stunts, the movie has solid performances. The five leads are enjoyable, but Paul Proios and Danielle Renee really steal the show. I'm reminded of the Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smiths of the world, who made big movies with small budgets.

I saw this film at the Pasadena film Festival. And I liked it very much!
Cullen1328 January 2009
I saw this in Pasadena and didn't know what to expect. After the screening I found the filmmakers and talked to them about their experience and what they had to do to get their film made. They were very smart and engaging people who were thrilled that they had won an award for their efforts. I believe it was for best action film in the festival. After speaking to the filmmakers, I realized what a daunting task it was for them to shoot this film on such a small budget and was wholly impressed with what they accomplished. It was an entertaining thriller that had me guessing till the very end. I enjoyed it very much and personally would like to see these young filmmakers get another chance to bring another story to the screen. Well Done!

Great Twists and Turns
spectordan31 March 2008
I really enjoyed seeing this movie in Houston, Texas. The movie very well-written, well-produced, and well-acted. The script is a really unique idea, taking the well-traveled idea of a scavenger hunt and infusing it with modern technology. And like every good adventure story, the plot unfolds with lots of unexpected twists and turns. I actually found myself gasping at several key moments.

Generally the movie reminded me a little of "Blair Witch Project" with a few significant differences: better script, better production, and better acting. The starring duo of Magill and Proios really had great on screen energy; I particularly enjoyed Proios's Jack Black-like antics in the front half of the film.

You will have to see the film to appreciate its awesome surprise ending. You will never guess where it is headed!

Fantastic Movie - Fun and Surprising - Creative
shane_daugherty23 April 2008
Very surprised at the quality of this movie, creative script, quality actors and creative direction make for a great treat in Cinema. The common comment that was made came out of the theater the comment was "Not your typical movie", is what makes this film stand out from the pack. Go see it and enjoy, you will be glad you did!!!

One of the true enjoyments of this film was the pre-release activity that was generated. The story begins with a series of games and hunts all over the USA (possibly world) to get you into the film, the characters and story. Very entertaining and a step in the right direction, this will not be last we see of this concept it is a definite platform for future films to learn from.

AMAZING - You're cheating yourself if you don't see this film!
lkazen31 December 2007
I was happily surprised with this film. I went into the theater expecting lower grade cinematography, choppier scene sequences, and amateur acting but all those expectations were quickly crushed. The movie opened with an attention getting chase scene and kept me interested with twists and turns and a splash of comedy. What seemed to be an innocent enough GPS treasure hunt film turned into an intriguing who done it and… I couldn't figure it out! In one scene I was laughing and in the next I was chomping on my M&Ms waiting for the next big thrill.

The music choices were good and the action scenes were even better. The editing was unreal… seamless… at one point the film shows silhouettes of the actors against the forest background reflecting back on events… this was my favorite part and showed how well made this low budget film was. Hats off to the writers and director - I recommend this film 100% and will definitely see it again.

A twisting thriller with Magill magic!
jbobo-227 March 2008
I am not a big action thriller fan but I loved this movie. It had enough twists and surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat. I saw it at the Studio Movie Grill in Houston and would rather have seen it in a regular theater to not get distracted by the serving of food. However, Daniel and Paul were awesome in their roles and their best scenes were together. Daniel Magill may be a newcomer but he carried this movie brilliantly. I am more than ready for a sequel, how about GPS-Hawaii or GPS-Easter Island, Wow! Better yet... 'GPS - The Florida Keys', could be totally awesome. The Texas Premiere was great. Thank you Eric Colley, Hallie Shepherd, and Daniel Magill, the eyes of Texas shown upon you last night.

I have seen Daniel Magill in other performances on stage and screen and his versatility is amazing and his best moments are subtle and very human. Having him there at the premiere to meet greet, and answer questions was charming and gracious. Hollywood, take notice! You have a new Robert Redford talent here in Houston, grab him quick.

Not Bad.
HDbuff19 September 2007
I saw GPS in LA. This movie blew me away. I expected a low budget campy horror film and got an epic adventure that took me back to my favorite thriller movies from the 80's. Indiana Jones, Goonies, Weird Science, Lost Boys, all were fun and memorable and GPS stands up to these wonderful cult classics. This film looked gorgeous, I think it was High Def, definitely felt and looked like a real movie. The editing was professional, fast paced and the story moved along nicely. Never had that cheesy, bad editing, that you would expect in indie horror films today. Granted, this is a movie about GPS Hunting or "Geocaching" and they really make it light hearted with a lot of comedy and still have serious parts to keep you in suspense. Reminds me of Suicide Kings, or a "Who Done It" mystery, very clever. They also have a theme song to boot, hilarious. They don't make films like this anymore and I miss them. Great Job on a whatever budget you had, kudos to a job well done, you guys should be proud! (singing) Going on a GPS Hunt.... Me and Andrew.....
