- A mother falls for a younger man while her daughter falls in love for the first time. Mother Nature messes with their fates.
- Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer), a 40-year-old divorced mother produces the has-been television comedy "You Go Girl," which seems doomed since her boss no longer allows the show to tackle any vaguely-controversial subjects. Then she meets Adam (Paul Rudd) , an attractive, spontaneously funny, single, 29-year-old actor at an audition. She successfully casts him, which revives the show's ratings. She also dates him, but her pathological insecurity, focused on their age difference, compromises the relationship. That culminates when she suspects him of infidelity with the show's star, and the studio gives those two their own sitcom.—KGF Vissers
- A woman ages in Hollywood. Divorced mom Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer) writes and produces a sitcom set at a high school. She depends on her daughter Izzie (Saoirse Ronan) for slang. The long-in-the-tooth show gets new life when Rosie hires Adam (Paul Rudd) to play an awkward nerd. As Izzie hits puberty, puts away her Barbie dolls, and sets her sights on her first love, Rosie finds herself attracted to Adam, who's 11 years her junior. Things seem to go well until they don't. What's behind the miscommunication: Hollywood egos, ageism, or men's natural attraction to younger women? Meanwhile, Izzie finds her voice. Does Rosie need Mother Nature's help, or is that the worst idea possible?—<jhailey@hotmail.com>
- 40-year-old divorced Rosie Hanson is the showrunner for "You Go Girl", a scripted television show aimed primarily at the teenage-girl market. Beyond the drama she regularly goes through with the show's star, diva Brianna Minx who is going through issues in her personal life well beyond the teenager she portrays on the show, Rosie is going through her own teen drama at home as her only offspring, 13-year-old Izzie--wise beyond her years in some respects and still a little girl in others-- is going through her first case of puppy love for classmate Dylan, while doubting that he even notices her as a member of the opposite sex. Both Rosie and her ex-husband Nathan are clinging to their youth with every fiber of their beings, using any available cosmetic options; Nathan has managed to land another girlfriend, but Rosie has not dated since their divorce. Casting a supporting-teen role for the show, Rosie meets Adam Pearl, the only person auditioning who has any real talent, who gets the part despite obviously being well past his teens. On his initiative, Adam and Rosie start to date despite Rosie's concern about their age difference (she eventually learns that he's precisely 29). Regardless of what Rosie does to cling on to her youth and Adam does for Rosie to see him more than the comic persona he puts on to hide his insecurities, the question becomes whether they actually have a future together, with other obstacles thrown in, such as someone behind the scenes trying to sabotage things for her own benefit, Along the way, Rosie turns to an exasperated Mother Nature for advice, lamenting all that her baby-boomer generation has done in society to subvert all that Rosie's generation, the baby boomers, have done in society to subvert the course of nature.—Huggo
- A quirky Mother Nature explains how nature works and says people are the only ones who try to go against what nature intended, trying to make themselves look younger. During the opening credits photos and footage of plastic surgery patients is shown.
Rosie narrates in her first scene, explaining how she tried to look like she was still in her 30s, but her husband Nathan found someone in her 20s. Nathan comes to her house with middle school daughter Izzie, and Rosie says he was late. Nathan confesses that he got confused and delivered each child to the wrong ex-wife.
Izzie and Rosie have fun playing with Barbies together. In several scenes they are shown shopping together and talking about Dylan, a boy she likes. In one scene they are shopping for clothes and Izzie thinks she is fat and not pretty.
On an oval track, Rosie runs and talks with Mother Nature, who apparently no one else can see. Their conversations, which take place throughout the movie, are apparently not heard by anyone else. Mother Nature eats potato chips while running and for some odd reason, Rosie later complains when Mother Nature gets crumbs in her bed.
Izzie and her friend Mel make too much noise playing a video game while Rosie is trying to work. In a later scene, they make crank calls because as someone who works in show business, Rosie has their phone numbers. Henry Winkler is very understanding but later reports the girls' offense to Rosie when they meet on a lot.
Rosie is a writer and producer for the network comedy "You Go Girl" starring the beautiful Brianna Minx as one of a group of high school students who obviously look too old to be in school. Kids like the show. Rosie has a meeting with network executive Marty Watkin who says ratings are going down and something must be done, and he also complains about the use of an offensive word.
Actors audition for a new role. They are all terrible. Then Adam shows up and he is excellent. It is clear he will get the role.
Brianna complains, as she often does, about things that are upsetting her and keeping her from doing her best work. As Adam is being prepared for his first episode, Rosie tells him Brianna needs to be told how great she is. While Brianna is outside smoking, Adam does that, though it appears to be flirting. This is captured on camera. And even though she smokes, Brianna is one of the celebrities doing public service announcements, telling people not to smoke. Which she does as soon as she is off camera.
Adam is very good in his first episode as a nerd and he becomes the show's most popular actor. He wants to go out with Rosie even though she is older. Rosie claims to be 37 and Adam says he is 32, though both are obviously lying. Their relationship is compared to "The Graduate", which they watch in one scene, but that movie had the woman seducing the man, not the other way around.
Rosie tries on several dresses and asks Izzie about them. It takes a while for Rosie to come up with something that looks cool. Adam and Rosie go to a club and are let in while people in line complain about this older woman getting in before they do. Inside, it is very noisy and young people are making remarks about this old woman, and so is Mother Nature. Still, Rosie stays for a while, and Adam dances even though no one else is. Adam saw Rosie was cold and lent her his jacket, so he has to reach into the jacket (which Rosie is still wearing) for his keys and phone when they get back in the car.
Rosie and Adam continue their relationship as Izzie continues to attract Dylan. While picking up Izzie at school on several occasions, Rosie sees Izzie having difficulty making friends and even getting in a fight with a boy.
The cast and crew get together at Rosie's house to watch an episode. Izzie and Mel are playing the video game. Nathan shows up and gets in a disagreement with Rosie. He mentions he is now a writer for a reality show about assisted living.
At a restaurant, the waitress is a fan of Adam and an aspiring actress who gives him her head shot.
In one scene with Adam, Rosie tells the movie audience that her first job was on "Family Ties" and Urkel to Adam is like David Cassidy to her. They're just too different.
Eventually, Rosie confesses to being older (while Adam admits to being younger) and later she says her relationship with Adam will never work in the long term and she wants to break up.
Adam starts sending presents and doing other nice things to try to win Rosie back. However, the gifts have to go through hot young secretary Jeannie, who sets out to sabotage Adam's efforts, hoping to get Adam for herself. She finds a photo of Brianna naked in bed and puts it on Adam's cell phone, later planting the phone where Rosie will be sure to see it. And even if that means nothing, Jeannie is skilled at Photoshop and has been creating controversial photos of Brianna. She creates a photo of Adam and Brianna looking like they like each other in the front seat of a car, and Rosie receives the photo in the mail as part of a notice from the sheriff's department which is sent to people who run a red light with a camera.
Adam and Rosie get in an argument when she finds the incriminating photo on his phone.
Adam is such a good actor that the network wants to create a show just for him. Adam is willing to only if he gets the great people who worked on "You Go Girl" to work on the new show.
While waiting for a meeting Rosie hears two men disparage all the major middle-aged female celebrities and she reads them the riot act.
Marty tells Rosie about the new show and that "You Go Girl" has been canceled because it is not innovative enough and not enough young people are watching. Successful shows are edgier and contain content only for adults.
Rosie is asked to work on Adam's new show and she refuses to have anything to do with him.
Izzie is having trouble with math. Izzie knows what to do but she is expected to show her work, which she has difficulty doing when she can figure out the answer her own way. When Rosie goes in to talk to the math teacher about being too hard on Izzie, he angrily claims he is right and Rosie is wrong, and Rosie chastises him. Izzie is so happy.
As Rosie is watching unedited footage from "You Go Girl" with the time of filming, she realizes the notice from the sheriff shows a time when Adam was there, not in his car. Jeannie is eventually caught and dealt with, when she is hiding as Rosie confronts Marty and threatens to tell his wife. Rosie is willing to get back together with Adam.
Izzie finally has her chance to go out with Dylan. She will perform for the school's talent show. Before the show, with her mother watching, she sings "Moronic", accompanying herself on the guitar. The tune and most of the words are the same as Alanis Morissette's "Ironic".
At the talent show, where Sally Kellerman is one of the moms, Izzie performs with two other girls, and her mom sees she and Dylan have gotten together. As she leaves with Adam, Rosie says just because she is older, she isn't going to give up enjoying loud music or that sort of thing. Mother Nature reminds her she has to make way for young people like her daughter.
