decent exercise / instruction; too many production gimmicks
georoad5 July 2006
This is a decent exercise video. The issues I have with it is the production decisions to be cutting edge with their video effects and constantly moving camera. I found both to be distracting from my ability to mimic their movements. In addition, the explanation of how to hold the feet, and the reasons could have been better. It was good to have a second student; perhaps separate audio tracks could have been used to better separate the beginner and more advanced section. The disk I rented had the bonus 14 minute energy workout, which was quite good, though it is best done by those at the intermediate level. I also found the running time a bit confusing. The total length of video was different enough from totaling each of the chapters that I'm not sure what they considered the total.

THIS is the place to make a new beginning for yourself!

This was my introduction to the discipline of Pilates. I found it to be excellent in that it encourages the beginner with complete continuous instruction which is leavened with humor and full explanations. The format using a student is doubly good for those who are just starting, making them have a sense that they can work up to the proficiency level of the instructor. Ana Caban is warm, insightful and clear. This is the DVD that I recommend to anyone who really wants to get into this challenging form of self-improvement.

Just like New Year's resolutions, decisions about exercising are hard to maintain. I think that people who begin this regimen by watching and then following Ana and her student Tara will find that they are inspired to stay with it.
