In the summer of 2017, Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis surprised Hollywood, London and the entire entertainment world when he revealed that he retired from acting and would make no more films. His final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Phantom Thread” (2017) brought Day-Lewis his sixth Oscar nomination, his eighth Golden Globe nom and his seventh BAFTA bid (losing all three to Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour”).
One of the most respected actors of his generation, Day-Lewis is the only man who has won three Oscars for Best Actor. Those victories were for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). In fact he is one of only three men to win acting Oscars three times; the others are Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson. In addition, he has won two Best Actor awards each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

Only one episode remains in Season 3 of “Chucky,” and what a bloody road it’s been so far, especially for actor Devon Sawa. The actor has now officially died twice on screen this season, pulling double duty as President James Collins and body double Randall Jenkins.
If you thought Chucky’s ruthless eye-gouging of the President was bloody, this week’s Episode 7 traps Randall Jenkins in an elevator that feels straight out of an iconic horror classic.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with series creator Don Mancini and actor Devon Sawa about that ultra-bloody death sequence and how the actor inspires Mancini’s writing on the series.
Mancini explains, “Devon’s a bit of a muse. Idle Hands and Final Destination is where my Devon Sawa fandom started, like a lot of people; although yours may have started with Casper. I was a bit too old for that. But it’s really...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Chucky” Season 3: Episode 6 & Episode 7.
Chucky’s greatest fear, dating all the way back to his introduction in 1988’s Child’s Play, has been death. The serial killer transferred his soul, via voodoo, to a Good Guy doll to avoid it. This week’s brand new seventh episode of “Chucky” Season 3, “There Will Be Blood,” saw the ghost of Charles Lee Ray confront his greatest fear and meet his maker, Damballa. It also brought Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif back to the screen in a shocking turn of events.
Episode 6 saw Chucky commit to going down in a blaze of glory by using the saved eyeball he gouged from President James Collins (Devon Sawa) to gain access to the nuclear missiles. It created an intense standoff in the launch room, with the episode seemingly killing Chucky for good. Except, the White House is home to many restless spirits,...

“The light. Always, the light.” Tom Ripley is staring at a Caravaggio painting in a Roman church, his typical blank expression a touch more bewildered than usual, when a priest comes up behind him and tells him to pay attention to the light, how the artist uses the contrast of brightness and deep shadow to direct the eye. The moment is brief; Tom isn’t one for introspection, and like a shark, he never stays in place for long. But the line doubles as a clue to the audience as well, some of whom have been as bemused as Tom by “Ripley’s” quietly dazzling style.

An electrician, a priest, and the President.
No, that's not the start of a joke. It's just three out of the five characters already played by Devon Sawa on Chucky.
Anyone even slightly familiar with the franchise is already aware of Chucky's constant and imminent return with each installment.
However, the almost meta resurrection of Devon Sawa with each season was an unexpected surprise.
If you've been along for the insane killer doll ride for all three seasons, then you know by now that no adult character, whether main, recurring, or extra, is ever safe in the Chucky universe.
And much like Kenny McCormick from South Park, no adult character is more expected to die than those played by Sawa.
The show stands out with its over-the-top and campy kills in a franchise that centers around a possessed doll with a lust for bloody macabre.

Not even death can slow Chucky in “There Will Be Blood,” the penultimate episode of “Chucky” Season 3. With the killer receiving a mortal blow in the last episode, Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) can now take full advantage of the White House’s bizarre supernatural purgatory, leaving him free to continue his current reign of terror as a ghost. While that spells trouble for Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), it makes for an outrageously satisfying bloodbath heading into next week’s finale.
“There Will Be Blood” covers a lot of ground in short order, with Charles Lee Ray confronting his maker over his failures before he can continue his current path of destruction. Lexy, Jake, and Devon continue their desperate bid to find Lexy’s sister, which means seeking answers from the afterlife. They’re in luck, considering Warren Pryce (Gil Bellows) enlists...

Just two episodes remain in Season 3 of “Chucky,” with the second-to-last episode airing this Wednesday night on USA & Syfy. It’s titled “There Will Be Blood,” and oh yes there will be.
Last week’s episode was absolutely Insane, with Chucky taking control of the situation room in the White House and attempting to start World War 3. His plan was thwarted, but not before nuking the North Pole. In the wake of launching that missile, Chucky met the true death, his doll body disintegrating into ash like he got Thanos snapped out of existence.
The episode ended with an appearance from Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray in his human form, with his spirit now free from the doll and roaming around the haunted White House.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for this week’s episode: “Parapsychologists investigate the disturbances in the White House, while Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) plans her escape.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are two of the biggest titans of cinema. DiCaprio is known for his charisma and flawless acting while Scorsese’s gritty realism is unmatched by anyone else. Magic has happened whenever these two worlds have collided in movies like “The Departed” & “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about this week’s episode of “Chucky” Season 3, which aired on USA and Syfy last night and was expected to be available on Peacock today. After all, we had previously been told that all new episodes of “Chucky” would be available for streaming the day after they aired, an exciting change from previous seasons of the hit horror series.
And while last week’s mid-season premiere of “Chucky” indeed did arrive on Peacock last Thursday, this week’s episode – titled “Panic Room” – is currently missing from the service.
So what’s going on here? The official @PeacockTVCare customer service account over on Twitter has been responding to fans who are wondering why they can’t stream this week’s episode of “Chucky” on Peacock, and their answer indicates a shift from the original plan.

The wait is now over and it’s time for a new presidential contender, Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif), aka Chucky, who has arrived and is ready to torment another day. After a long hiatus during which the creators divided season 3 into two parts, Don Mancini finally bestows another part of season 3 with four more episodes in its haunting repertoire. Although it seems impossible, Chucky Season 3: Part Two is even crazier and bloodier, as the season takes a spiritual spin.
Following the conclusion of Part One, we are left with a fast-aging Chucky, clinging to life as a serial killer in a doll body. But the man's foe isn't just the old age: Jake (Zackary Arthur), Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), and Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson) are back and are hellbent on destroying the remains of Chucky's soul for good. [Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Ripley” below.]
The turning point for “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s limited Netflix series re-imagining of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” occurs in Episode 3 (“Sommerso”), when grifter Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) murders Dickie (Johnny Flynn) in a boat in Sanremo. But the grifter discovers that murder is a filthy business in a bravura 20-minute sequence, in which he has difficulty disposing of Dickie’s body, and we observe every arduous moment in close to real-time.
This protracted view of Tom’s twisted mind in action is made even more menacing in black-and-white (shot by “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Robert Elswit). After learning that his grift has come to a sudden end, Tom grabs the oar and beats Dickie to death. But then everything goes wrong.

Tom Ripley is one of literature’s great con men, and Andrew Scott is a perfect choice to play him. The Fleabag and Sherlock actor is charming and has a sophisticated air… and yet there’s something a little off about him. (Even when he played a priest in Fleabag, he had a mischievous glint in his eye.) He slips effortlessly into the title role in Netflix’s Ripley — all eight episodes are now streaming; I’ve seen the first four — and the lush black-and-white cinematography is a joy to behold. The series is badly hampered by an overly deliberate pace,...

Netflix has released the first track, “Leaving New York,” from the “Ripley” score by composer Jeff Russo. Steven Zaillian’s eight-episode limited series, a noirish, black-and-white adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” streams April 4, which coincides with the score’s online release. (Listen to the jaunty track below.)
Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”) stars as sociopath Tom Ripley, who grifts his way from ’60s New York to Italy, obsessed by a life of leisure when he meets Americans Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), a vagabond painter, and writer Marge (Dakota Fanning).
“Leaving New York,” which features the ascending interplay of piano with cello and violin, evokes Tom’s escape from a bleak existence as a petty con artist. Making a place for himself among critically acclaimed directors like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve has turned himself into an extraordinary icon following his take on Dune. While previously the novels were considered “unadaptable” following David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed attempts, Villeneuve proved his capabilities with his sequels.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. The role of Batman has been played by many different actors in diverse ways over the years. In 1989, Michael Keaton headlined the cinematic adaptation of the iconic DC superhero in Tim Burton’s Batman. The actor-director duo collaborated on two successful films before Keaton announced that he would step down from playing the character in the 3rd installment.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart Movie Unfrosted Is Inspired By There Will Be Blood And Mad Men – Exclusive
Strap in: Jerry Seinfeld will drink… your… cereal milk. He’ll drink it up! Or something to that effect, anyway – the legendary comedian is making his feature directorial debut with Unfrosted, a film about (of all things) the origin of Pop-Tarts; the beloved toaster pastry that crashed onto the breakfast scene in the ‘60s. And this being a Jerry Seinfeld film, it’s going to be packed with stars and comedians, and allusions to some of the greatest films of all time – including none other than There Will Be Blood. Oh, and The Godfather.
“Do you remember the scene in The Right Stuff where Jeff Goldblum and Harry Shearer are running down the hall, and they burst into the darkened boardroom and they go, ‘It’s called… Sputnik!’? By delivering performances that add up to almost four and a half hours, the four acting Oscar winners of 2024 came within six minutes of setting a new academy record for highest single-year screen time average. Ultimately, they landed in fifth place with a mean of one hour, four minutes, and 57 seconds, thus becoming only the 12th winning quartet (and sixth in 10 years) to exceed 60 minutes.
Newly crowned Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) are credited with a whopping 81% of their foursome’s screen time total, respectively clocking in at 1:53:10 and 1:37:19 and outpacing all of the 2024 nominees by at least four minutes. Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

Jack Fisk as "Man in the Planet" in David Lynch's Eraserhead.
From Malick to PTA, going through De Palma and Lynch, Jack Fisk's contributions to American cinema are enough to take one's breath away. This year, he collaborated with Martin Scorsese for the first time and earned his third Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon. According to the designer, his director wanted his film to be "wide, big, like a western," and Fisk delivered.
Working primarily from historical documents, he dove deep into Osage country records to figure out the reality of the characters' lives, including which houses they once inhabited. He also dug through old buildings in search of period foundations and used original plans of buildings like the train station to recreate them as faithfully as possible. For the oil derricks, he recycled research he'd done for There Will Be Blood. In total,...

The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

The Academy Award, popularly known as the Oscars, is the most prestigious award that someone from within the film fraternity can win. It is every actor’s dream to etch their name in the annals of film history, a recognition of their mastery over the art form that takes a significant amount of time to refine. Over the years, several actors have won the award, thus setting themselves apart from the rest. In this article, we will take a look at five such actors whose Oscar records will not be broken anytime soon.
The film industry has seen the rise and fall of actors. While not everyone can make it big, those who have managed to do so have left their mark forever.
It is worth noting that an Oscar alone does not determine one’s talent, as it is merely a reward for the work that they put in.

Daniel Day-Lewis will remain retired from acting, despite best efforts to lure him back. Apparently the actor is also most displeased with “streamers”.
We’ve known for a while that Daniel Day-Lewis, the actor known for roles in films like Phantom Thread, There Will Be Blood and Gangs Of New York, has retired from acting.
Just to be clear, nothing has changed on that front. In fact, we’ve simply got further confirmation that Day-Lewis is not looking to make a comeback of any sorts.
Director Jim Sheridan, speaking to ScreenDaily, said he still talks to Day-Lewis, but the actor isn’t interested in making another film.
“I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else, he opens up the streamers and there’s seven thousand choices, none of them are good. Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote,...

Based on the entire history of the Oscars, Best Actor is the category that typically features the longest nominated performances, and that certainly rings true this year. While the modern academy has seen fit to recognize several unusually short lead male turns, they refrained from doing so in 2024 and instead made the current lineup the first since 2019’s to exclusively include actors who pass the one-hour and 50% screen time marks. By both metrics, this constitutes only the 14th such instance ever.
The 2024 Best Actor nominees have an average screen time of one hour, 25 minutes, and 54 seconds, or 64.31% of their respective films. These amounts are over 15 minutes and 5% greater than those applying to the 2023 contenders. In terms of actual time, their average is the eighth highest in the category’s 96-year existence, while their percentage mean is the 20th highest.

One of Daniel Day-Lewis‘ longtime directors is speaking out about the actor’s retirement.
If you didn’t know, the 66-year-old There Will Be Blood star ended his distinguished Hollywood career in June 2017.
Jim Sheridan directed three of Daniel‘s other films: 1989′s My Left Foot, 1993′s In the Name of the Father, and 1997′s The Boxer.
In a new interview, Jim revealed if he sees the three-time Oscar winner ever coming out of retirement.

It sounds like Daniel Day-Lewis is serious about his retirement from acting and won’t be returning, at least according to his longtime director Jim Sheridan. The Irish filmmaker directed three of Day-Lewis’ most prominent films: “My Left Foot” (1989), “In the Name of the Father” (1993) and “The Boxer” (1997). Day-Lewis won the Oscar for best actor with “My Left Foot” and was also nominated for “In the Name of the Father.”

“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).
Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.
Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)
Russell Carpenter, “Titanic” (1998)

Paul Dano is sharing his thoughts on the superhero fatigue that’s hitting the film industry, calling it a “welcome moment” he thinks could lead to better movies down the road.
During an interview with The Independent, published online Saturday, the Spaceman actor said he feels “quantity over quality” in recent years played a role in the current state of Hollywood, especially Marvel and DC Studios’ box office flops last year.
“It’s an interesting moment where everybody has to go like, ‘Ok — what now?’ Hopefully from that, somebody either breathes new life into [comic book movies], or something else blossoms which is not superheroes,” he said. “I’m sure there will still be some good ones yet to come, but I think it’s kind of a welcome moment.”

Producer Daniel Lupi had worked for years with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and Steven Spielberg, but until Killers of the Flower Moon, he had never collaborated with Martin Scorsese. So when he got the call to come on board, it was a no-brainer. “How could you say no to Martin Scorsese?” he says. “He’s Martin Scorsese. Paul Thomas Anderson would probably say the same thing. Some of the shots in Boogie Nights, you could argue, were inspired by Goodfellas.”
Lupi came on board after the script for the adaptation of David Grann’s nonfiction book had already been rewritten to focus on the relationship between Lily Gladstone’s Mollie, an Osage woman, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart amid the genocide that Ernest participated in which targeted Mollie’s family. As of this writing the combined predictions of Gold Derby users lean towards Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) with 17/5 odds in this year’s Oscar race for Best Actor. Meanwhile, Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) is close behind in second place with 69/20 odds. However, the former may have more going for him. Here are five reasons why I think Murphy is the favorite.
SEEOscars: Will ‘Oppenheimer’ or ‘Poor Things’ win all three design awards?
1. He’s starring in the Best Picture frontrunner
“Oppenheimer” is expected to be quite a juggernaut on Oscar night. It’s currently predicted to take home eight accolades: Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Score and Best Sound. With that in mind, it’s possible that Murphy could be carried along in the sweep. He’s the face of the whole thing and carries the film on his shoulders.

Authenticity was top of mind when Martin Scorsese and his team set about creating the world of “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The Oscar-nominated film, which is in contention for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score and Original Song at the Academy Awards, aims to capture the tragic true story of the murders of several Osage in 1921 Oklahoma, and the film’s design team went to great lengths to do service to the tale at hand.
Set during a time when indigenous peoples in the area were tremendously wealthy owing to oil discovered on their land, “Killers of the Flower Moon” chronicles the horrendous series of murders that were designed to transfer ownership of the land back to white people, all told through the eyes of Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone) and her husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio).

2024 Oscars Best Production Design overview: Can any of the other 3 nominees surpass ‘Barbenheimer’?
A critically important craft to filmmaking is production design. The production designer is responsible for the look of a film, which includes finding locations, designing and building sets, and running the art department. Although the name of this category has changed over the past nine-and-a-half decades, the general principle is the same, with this Oscar going both to a film’s production designer(s) and its set decorator(s).
This category doesn’t usually match the ultimate Best Picture winner; the last time that happened was in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro‘s “The Shape of Water,” and before that was Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. One of this year’s nominees didn’t even receive a Best Picture nomination.

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. If you’re wondering who each of these guest stars are or where you’ve previously seen them: don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. What follows is a list of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith cast,...

Following his show-stopping performance as Ernest Burkhart for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Paul Thomas Anderson for the filmmaker’s next mysterious feature. Cameras took snaps of DiCaprio in Eureka, California, where Anderson’s latest project is in production. DiCaprio looks rough in the unofficial images in a flannel long coat, black toque, and gray t-shirt. He seems positively exhausted while sporting a handlebar mustache, lending credence to the actor’s ability to transform for different roles.
Cameras on Anderson’s untitled film start rolling early this year in California, with the filmmaker directing, writing the script, and producing alongside Sara Murphy. Details about the plot remain a mystery. However, Deadline‘s exclusive report says the project includes a contemporary setting and is the “most commercial” endeavor Anderson has put their hands on. Powered by a commensurate budget, the untitled film...

There is beauty in capturing the human face in close-up. The face becomes the stage for the drama to unfold on the screen. Will, directed by Tim Mielants, is a film that is interested in capturing moments in the close-up first and foremost. The spatial dynamics of the scenes are secondary. That being said, Will has a brilliant screenplay, and the characters are so grounded in the story, which we are told has something to do with history (with an H).
I hadn’t ever heard any stories about the Belgian occupation by Germany during World War 2. There might have been some good films made, and Will has just piqued my interest to look for them. World War II dramas are a somewhat dubious category of cinema for me. The dramatization of events and circumstances of the characters neatly tied into a story often becomes entertaining, and this entertainment is...
